  6. We are very happy to learn that BERLIN THE WICKED CITY has been shortlisted for the 2020 UK Games Expo Award in the 'Best Expansion' category. The judges said, "The whole book has superb production values, artwork is plentiful and appropriate to the setting... The subject matter is, without question, very dark, and there are several subjects within the book that are touched on briefly, but with the seriousness that they deserve. Multiple content warnings are present throughout the book and make it very clear that maturity is required when playing this game, it’s something that rewards those willing to delve into the background." Congratulations to the author @sirlarkins David Larkins and everyone else involved in creation of Berlin the Wicked City! The winners will be announced at UKGE's VirtuallyEXPO, on August 21-23. https://www.thedodd.com/post/ukge-best-expansion-category-berlin-the-wicked-city
  7. And here are our plucky New Zealand Cult of Chaos Keepers flying the Chaosium flag at Tauranga Armageddon – as NZ is now Covid-free they can enjoy face-to-face conventions again. (Kind of ironic that the only face-to-face game convention going on in the world right now is called Armageddon...) https://www.chaosium.com/blogconventions-remember-them-are-still-happening-in-new-zealand-chaosium-will-be-at-armageddon-tauranga-jul-2526-and-armageddon-wellington-aug-12/

  10. In 1978, hot on the heels of the release of the revolutionary White Bear, Red Moon strategy game and the RuneQuest roleplaying game, Chaosium Inc. released Lords of the Middle Sea. This was a board war game, set in the post-apocalyptic ruins of a flooded North America, in the year 2401. Lords of the Middle Sea was Lynn Willis's first Chaosium title. Lynn went on to become one of the longest-serving members of the Chaosium team, co-authoring or contributing to such revered titles as Basic Roleplaying, the second and third editions of RuneQuest, the original Masks of Nyarlathotep (with Larry DiTillio), Worlds of Wonder, Ringworld, Elric, Ghostbusters (for West End Games), and the fifth and sixth editions of Call of Cthulhu. Lynn Willis passed away in 2013. Though the Lords of the Middle Sea game never found the success of RuneQuest or Call of Cthulhu, it sustained a dedicated fanbase and copies of the original game are collectors’ items. And now, 42 years later, Chaosium is proud to announce the development of Lords of the Middle Sea Roleplaying Game, a new tabletop RPG joining the ranks of Call of Cthulhu, RuneQuest, HeroQuest, Basic Roleplaying, 7th Sea, the upcoming Rivers of London, and other Chaosium titles. Inspired by Lynn Willis's Lords of the Middle Sea board war game, in the RPG the player characters take on the roles of explorers, traders, adventurers, or others seeking to survive and thrive in an Earth barely recovering from world-wide collapse, nuclear war, and environmental catastrophe. In the Lords of the Middle Sea world settlements are few and far between, and civilization has just begun to establish itself. Technology ranges from steam-powered airships and watercraft, to high tech held by long-hidden enclaves that remained intact in their underground shelters. Each player group is centered around their ship, customized during character generation and during play, with its own quirks and drawbacks, strengths and weaknesses. The game’s structure rewards both episodic play and long-term campaigns. With a core rulebook written by award-winning veteran game designer John Snead (Blue Rose, Eclipse Phase, Exalted, Mage: The Awakening, The Laundry, etc.), Lords of the Middle Sea utilizes a streamlined version of the Basic Roleplaying system, recently released under an Open Gaming License. The core rules will be followed by a gamemaster screen and an adventure sourcebook. Future supplements are being planned. "As a sort of futuristic proto-Steampunk – before Steampunk proper existed as a genre – Lynn Willis's Lords of the Middle Sea was Chaosium's second original IP, after Greg Stafford's Glorantha. It's a pleasure to be bringing it back for a new gaming audience", said Chaosium president Rick Meints. The game is being produced by the RuneQuest creative team of Jeff Richard (The Guide to Glorantha, King of Sartar, HeroQuest, etc.) and Jason Durall (BasicRoleplaying, RuneQuest, TheLaundry, World War Cthulhu, Conan, etc.). No publication date has been announced. Jason Durall preps for one of the initial playtests of the Lords of the Middle Sea RPG

  16. Updated this post, now that the print version of CDA3 is out: https://www.chaosium.com/blogcthulhu-dark-ages-a-tale-of-three-editions Last week Chaosium released Cthulhu Dark Ages 3rd Edition in hardcover and special edition leatherette. Here's some helpful information about the three editions of our medieval setting for Call of Cthulhu, and how they differ. CTHULHU DARK AGES FIRST EDITION (2004) Author: Stéphane Gesbert with friends 178 page softcover with b&w interior The first Cthulhu Dark Ages edition came out in 2004. It was originally published in German by Call of Cthulhu licensee Pegasus Spiele under the title 'Cthulhu 1000AD'. The author was Stéphane Gesbert. Although based in the same time period as Cthulhu Dark Ages 2nd and 3rd Editions, the first edition has continental Europe as its setting, rather than Anglo-Saxon England. The original Cthulhu Dark Ages won the award for "Best non-d20 RPG" in the 2004 ENnie Awards. Cthulhu Dark Ages 1st Edition is available from: Chaosium (PDF) DriveThruRPG (PDF & POD) CTHULHU DARK AGES SECOND EDITION (2015 - limited release) Authors: Chad Bowser and Andi Newton, with Mike Mason and friends 180 page softcover with b&w interior Cthulhu Darks Ages was updated for Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition, and completely rewritten by Chad Bowser and Andi Newton. The new setting is the Severn Valley of Anglo-Saxon England. The second edition was released at Gen Con 2015, right at the time the new management team came on board at Chaosium. A couple of hundred softcover copies had been produced for sale at the booth, Print-On-Demand with black-and-white interior layout. Chaosium vice president Michael O'Brien explains why Cthulhu Dark Ages 2nd Edition didn't get a wider release: "We decided not to proceed with a full commercial release at the time because we had plans to significantly lift the production quality of the Call of Cthulhu line, with hardbacks and full colour interior art. We felt this version just didn't do Cthulhu Dark Ages justice." Cthulhu Dark Ages 2nd Edition is out-of-print. CTHULHU DARK AGES 3RD EDITION (2020) Authors: Chad Bowser and Andi Newton, with James Holloway, Mike Mason 270 page full-colour hardcover The newly-released third edition of Call of Cthulhu Dark Ages is a revised and expanded version of the second edition, produced in hardcover with new layout and full color interiors. Inside this setting guide you will find a player’s guide to the Dark Ages, an optional Sanity mechanic for mirroring the medieval mindset, rules for the oral tradition of storytelling and mounted combat, a grimoire of Dark Age spells plus optional rules for Folk Magic, a bestiary of monsters, as well as a fully detailed setting—the Anglo-Saxon community of Totburh in England’s Severn Valley, full of interesting characters, dwelling descriptions, and a multitude of plot hooks for Keepers to use and develop. The book features three ready-to-play scenarios introduce players to the world of Cthulhu Dark Ages, building on the tensions, characters, and horrors lurking in Toburh and the lands surrounding the community. Additional material compared to the second edition includes sections on poetry and kennings, the written word, using the Oral Tradition in games, amulets, further use of Sanity in the setting, Paganism, and Norse Paganism. Cthulhu Dark Ages 3rd Edition is available from: Chaosium (Hardcover +PDF, Leatherette +PDF, PDF) DriveThruRPG (PDF) and soon to be in retail distribution WHAT THE CRITICS SAY ABOUT CTHULHU DARK AGES 3RD EDITION "Cthulhu Dark Ages is a brilliant addition to the line, a book anyone who loves the game needs on their shelf... It has everything the previous edition has and more... a major revision packed with all sorts of new material that the devious cultists operating the Chaosium know you will not be able to resist."—Andrew Logan Montgomery, Exploring the Otherworlds of Fiction, Magic, and Gaming. "A wonderful tool for spicing up your more conventional Lovecraftian games… Come for the chance to stab abominations with pointy sticks, stay for the loving guide to dark ages England."—Tabletop Gaming (UK). "An excellent starting point for what can be a vibrant and dangerous new world for Call of Cthulhu players to go nuts and die in... the entire supplement is a clear indication of the passion the writing team had for the enormity of the project, and deserve serious applause and congratulations for it."—Never Read the Latin. "Cthulhu Dark Ages is, in my opinion, one of the best Call of Cthulhu books to come out, from any edition… After reading the book, I was filled with ideas for a Cthulhu Dark Ages campaign. It screamed “don’t just read me, play me” in a way that only the best gaming books do."—Rolling Boxcars.

  21. There a several titles with OBS underway but TAaEoDP is not one of them.
  22. Please note that until further notice OneBookShelf, who run DriveThruRPG, has asked us (Chaosium) not to approve and pass on to them any further Print-On-Demand requests for community content. This is for operational reasons at their end. You may not be aware, but the process to create each POD test print is time-consuming and sometimes problematic for OBS. For those reasons the practice was discontinued outright for the DM's Guild. We are fortunate it is allowed on the Miskatonic Repository, but that is by their discretion. Chaosium has a very long-standing and successful partnership with OBS/DTRPG, which we are not going to take advantage of. Not every MR community title needs to be or should be available as POD. So, going forward, we have advised creators that only titles that have achieved Electrum seller status in PDF format (250 sales) shall be eligible for consideration for POD. The Electrum threshold comes from us (Chaosium), not OBS. We have instituted this to help our community content programs stay in OBS's good graces. We have to be mindful of how often we approve titles to get processed for POD publishing on DTRPG. They have a limited capacity to add POD titles on their site. MOB - Chaosium Inc.
