Let's get back to all the excitement!

The main thing, of course, being the "really really exciting news that we should be announcing soon2" that no one has mentioned yet and no one has tried guessing about! Any guesses? The ghost of Gary Gygax has converted to Runequest and is writing an adventure? The Design Mechanism are going to publish RQG adventures?

The "really really exciting news that we should be announcing soon" was the odd bit in the blog. How do they expect to top was has just been announced? Must be one hell of a franchise in the pipeline?

  2. I guess this is aimed to appeal to newcomers. The hardcore fans are like us are going to buy it anyway, so there isn't any sense in going after them.

The Gen Con copy shows the new game is gritty, but there is the promise of the game being playable up to the heroic level. In which case the cover makes much more sense.

However, I think that the scenarios that follow will set the tone of the game, after all that's what really made RQ2 great. Let us all pray for no cattle raiding ones.

  3. However, even if just the QS-v2 is released by then I'd imagine that RQ:G's date of release will have been announced.

If not arrived, it should hopefully be seen as imminent.

I fear that's not a surety:  IIRC they've said that a 2nd QS is coming (presumably based on a later, more-final version of the rules).  These mentions might be that QS-v2, though I honestly hope (and semi-expect) that it'll be the full edition...

I thought that, but there again it might not look good to do another QuickStarter. There are only so many drum rolls you can do to raise expectations before it becomes a bit of a joke.

Apologies for butting in, but I don't see a thread about the actual book - Aside from the art, should I buy it if I already have the Guide?

(sorry, I've not followed this much, not sure if there's new material in this)

The Glorantha Sourcebook covers the following subjects:
Geography: A basic overview of the geography of Glorantha.
History of Dragon Pass: A history of the central crossroads of Glorantha.
The Elder Races: A short overview of the main non-human species that predate humanity and once dominated the world.
Theogony: The story of the gods of Glorantha, primarily arranged by element (Darkness, Water, Earth, Fire, and Air).
Time: A history of Glorantha since the first Dawn.
Gods of the Lunar Way: The new gods of the Lunar religion.
Redline History of the Lunar Empire: A comprehensive history of the Lunar Empire since its founding and going until the early Hero Wars.
Gloranthan Magic: A short essay on the Gloranthan Runes, types of magic, and some theories about what is magic.
Gods and Mortals: An overview of gods, mortals, and those who straddle both worlds.
Sartar Magical Union: A list of the magical units that served Prince Argrath in his war against the Lunar Empire.

He fails to mention the awesome art, of course! Great maps too.

This moves GS from a "must get" item to a "must wait and see" for me...  :(

I think you'll find out, one way or another, that this is still a "must get" item.

However, if they toned down the background even more than its current faint level I would not be upset.

They didn't respond specifically to the runes issue, but did say that they were going to both have an artsy character sheet, and a B&W one. My guess is that what we are looking at is probably preliminary, and will probably go through final tweaks.

    SDLeary

That's my hope. The artsy one looks great, but tweaking it to make it more usable and easier to read the better.

Well mostly. The Eternal Battle Rune stayed around, and it's one of those highly personal very specific runes typical of HW/HQ1.

Well that was one that was so cool that it deserved to stay!

  12. The way the maths works for a 125% vs 75% contest against a 100% vs 50% one, means that your chance of a win of any kind is much greater when your opponent their % chance to defend lowered (respectively, Approx. >35% vs. Approx. >55% in this example).

Also, although your chance of a critical goes down by 1% in this example, the opponent's chance of a fumble goes up 1%.

...and there is literally no way it will ship by July 2018. I think it's even overly optimistic to say it will be at printers by then.

My guess it will be close to 3 years and done.

The last 13thAge Glorantha update indicated about 75% of the layout had been done. So at the current rate the PDF should hopefully be done and available in a couple of months. Then one month or so to Crowd Source any typos, and then about 3 months for printing / shipping.

However what I dislike sbout RQG will be the lengthy skill lists, and the fact that core characteristics are not a big factor in skill calculation. I think the stat+stat idea in the MRQ D100 SRD games (also in Chaosium's ElfQuest) is the best way to approach skills. For non-Gloranthan fantasy games I'll probably stick with Mythras or OpenQuest, depending upon how complex I want things to be.

For RQ6 I counted 22 standard skills and 38 Professional skills (total of 60), and then combat skills on top of that.

For RGQ I counted 59 in total (ignoring multiple versions of "Lore" and other such skills, the same as was ignored for RQ6), and then combat skills on top of that.

The core calculation for very young starting adventurers is important, but loses some bearing on the 21+ year old starting adventurers in RGQ as Professional, Cultural, Homeland, and Cult skill bonuses get factored in. I'm not sure, but I would imagine importing the stat+stat idea would not adversely distort how RQG works, if you feel the game needs it.

The main difference is that RQG is the D100 game that fits most closely with Glorantha, whilst Mythras / RQ6 / OpenQuest are for non-Gloranthan fantasy games. I'm relieved we have these variants at our disposal which allows for essentially the same game but different styles.
