I guess my question is this: which pass in the area is best suited for the movement of large armies? Thanks in advanced for any clarification.

According the the Gazetteer of Kerofinela and the Guide to Glorantha

The Five Passes through the Dragonspine are the only (relatively) easy places for a party of travelers to cross the Dragonspine. those passes are Belastran Pass, Dendrogi Pass, Dragon Pass,, the Harda Pas,s Trader’s Valley

Not saying this does not rule out armies but

Dragon Pass: This gap in the Dragonspine Range, about 16 miles southwest of Wintertop, provides the easiest passage north and south through the region.

Hard Pass: Held by the hero Harda against Gbaji so not so good looking...

Trader's Valley: Also called the Wideway or Trader’s Way, this is the broadest gap through the Dragonspine Hills, north of Top Ear. It is the easiest route, provided no monsters spew forth from Snakepipe Hollow.

Neither of the other two seem likely...

from GtG page 183 and also from page 56 of A Gazetteer of Kerofinela and various other pages in A Gazetteer of Kerofinela.

    *added by me

Seems Trader's Valley might be a good choice,

Just had a look at the map you mention, that road I believe is The Pavis Road which is a military road built by the Lunars for the Pavis Campaign.
Hmm, (ding, ding,) I believe we might have a winner.

Unless the Pavis Road goes through the Trader's Valley it seems that avoiding the Dragonspine entirely is the wise choice for armies travelling north or south. Of course wise does not always win wars.

    Cheers

RIP The Sword of Hollywood. I remember seeing his name on He Man and also Babylon 5, but first knew of him from Different Worlds.

    Hmm, sad.

Many times have I turned a page to see the Larry DiTillio byline and I would have to stop what I was doing and read.

I did not know he was behind Ringworld with Lynn Willis, that sounds like a magic team-up and avery good reason why I so lusted after this game. He left a big mark on my 80's gaming with many articles in DW and I believe Dragon as well as WD. Yes indeed, I wonder if he was responsible of all the Glorantha easter eggs that made it into B5.

Goodbye sir and thanks for all the words I enjoyed reading, about a hobby I enjoyed, period.

  3. Hmm I know this is not my usual stomping grounds, the HQ forums and all. But based on info gleaned here I now own both red cow modules and am very happy integrating all that Glorantha Goodness into my campaign.

Now, I was wondering, I already own RQ2's wonderful Pavis as well as Big Rubblein box set and the classic pdf from Moon Design to supplement it and make if searchable and to assist in creating player aids. Now the question; is would there be real advantages in having Pavis GTA to fill in the gaps of mythology, and add the HQ encounters (love the sartar companion's one page or more encounters/stories). Are there other advantages or new material in GTA that would make the purchase worth while? It 26 and a half bucks (cdn) which is a lot for a souvenir at the moment but perhaps I can add it to my wish list due to things it could add to an already great corner of the world.

    Cheers

Absolutely. I think I would have preferred to hear more of the story instead of his 'gishgudi solo' :) But at the end of the day, I am a better historian and gamer from having heard this and knowing that it exists. Whatever criticism I may have about it is surpassed by my respect for the scholarship.

There is s a Beowulf out there delivered in middle English  by Benjamin Bagby  in classic garb accompanying himself with a saxon harp... Thing else, no sets, nothing but costume harp and voice. Evokes Hallarax the Singer of Pavis riverside for me.

    Cheers

I'm glad you guys liked it. I didn't care for Pringle's [the artist] presentation style, but that's just my taste.

Taste is so subjective that while I love a good debate on art I refuse to pin much weight to it. But, in any case very nice!

I am bit unsure how to count the missile strike ranks. If PC's DEX SR is 2, do I count it like:

2 (shoot) + 5 (loading a new missile) + 2 (shoot), which would give strike ranks 2 / 9 (third shot not allowed)

    or

    2 (shoot) + 5 (loading a new missile + shoot) +  5 (loading a new missile + shoot), which would give strike ranks 2 / 7 / 12

The former... which means you can't get three shots off in the first round in RQG, whereas you could in RQ3. Interesting, I hadn't realized that.

Unless you can have a DEX SR of 0 (DEX 19+), so you could potentially go on 1, 6, 11 depending on how you interpret DEX SR 0.

This question and which solution is correct especially as regards SR 0 has bothered my since pre-internet BBS only days and that was not quite as useful. I hope no one objects but  I will quote these in rune questions for an official ruling, that I have be waiting on for just 30 years!

I received a quick and kind answer with a solution. May be isn't there a problem anymore with the coupon codes but rest assured you will not be let down if it comes.   ;)

Dustin has been great with my questions and concerns

OK, this guy really, really overplays it, but here is about 4 minutes of the Epic of Gilgamesh in Sumerian played on a period lute-like instrument called a gishgudi. Inasmuch as Gilgamesh is the spiritual ancestor of Glorantha and one of Greg's major influences, it's worth a listen.

Might have much to do with my love of bombastic over the top prog rock such as ELP or Yes but have to say I disagree. Not over the top at all. That was frigging awesome. Don't know if the obvious arabic take is canon—how ancient is that style—but it sure sounds ancient and even if not,,, WOW! I like!

There was a thread somewhere where we came up with who and what the Zaxs were. Could probably tie in with the current migratory animal thread ;)

    1000% agreed!😀

It has been now a bit over five years that I have published Gloranthan Cult One Pagers.

I have mentioned this before but damn, feel I must say it again. There are folk who kept "my game" alive while I was busy elsewhere living life and having tinges of regret for a lost time. Melodramatic p'raps but... Listen, RQ had all but disappeared with the exception of the Digests (RQ and Glorantha) and those newfangled games HW, HQ and MQ that none of my friends were thinking about. So, here is a shout out to those who have toiled to keep the incredible work of my heroes of yore alive. The Churchs, Days, Tadashis, Gigis, Olivers Perrins and Perines, Turneys, Gregs, and so many, many more; WOW... I get excited just thinking about then—that created this world we love.

A new generation came along that I missed or saw on the digests (while rpgs came and went in the hegemony of TSRWotCHasbroo) from afar through screens of ever increasing pixels and colours (in my real life exile), But everything after RQ 4 I just glimpsed,

Hmmm this than is getting way too long and has not said what I want to say, so moving ahead

A gift of the Hardcover RQ 6 woke me up to the new emerging realities (dare I use that word in this context?) and introduced me to Nash, Whitaker and friends as well as folk here with the opening of these BRP realms as the new home to all things Glorantha. Lots of great people doing lots of great work most unfunded and acting as fans (fanatics)...

Again I am missing many points people and other things but I should wrap by saying:

Thanx hkokko, for all the fish (oops wrong thanx...) for all the great stuff you have been doing for five years (plus). Wow greatness then, and greatness now!

So what do ya want for nothing, a rubber biscuit?

    —Jake Blues

    Cheers!

That said, the annual tumbleweed migration of Prax and the Wastlands is a sight to behold. Countless tumbleweeds (accompanied/herded by Runners and Pixies) roll north every Storm Season to their northern pastures near Pent, where they remain through Dark and Sea Season. Then they roll south again when Fire Season comes. Various Praxian clans and tribes, especially the Bison Riders, Zebra Riders, and Morokanth, follow the migration to pick off strays, sometimes coming into conflict with each other and the Runners.

I said this ought to major... no?

I would be temoted to set aside the earth notions and reasons for animal migration...climnate, weather, nd of coure animals using magentic fields to navigate migration paths...As Greg  said : "The world is made of everything" ...hence so are animals; so maybe those animals above migrate depending on their most powerful rune, hence their runic assocaitions. They migrate to sites and thats why there are certain temples at those locations...

Nice turn to Glorantha, and thank you for broaching the topic RHW.

John Hughs has a nice take on this which propels you idea forward in his amazing Questlines, Martin.
“Animals have their own tribes, and approximately 1 percent of each species have a high degree of consciousness, free will and volition. They have their own immortal leaders, heroes and shamans, who may dwell both on the Other Side and on the Lozenge"

He goes on the describe them having gods holy places hero quests and longterm goals.

My small addition to this conversation is a question, alas rather than an answer. What of Praxian migrations, this ought to be major, no?

    Cheers

Nowhere is there any suggestion that magic items or even coins and valuables gained from adventuring are subject to the 20 / 30 / 90 percent 'income' taxes. That could certainly be assumed, but then it would seem odd that there are detailed rules for how occupation income must be taxed and not a word about spoils of adventuring or war. If you take enemy weapons and armor do you have to pay for those? Gifts from other party members or inheritance from family?

    Good question

I was just thinking about this as related to another matter when I saw your question. That is, The rules as written or what makes for a good fun story (the closer these are the better the rules imo). But there is another set of factors: The players and the referee  (I will use this name for the example). Though the rules do not state it, what if the tax overseer was crooked (as if) just a little and decided to include that silver and pile of baubles in the taxable income.

"Your lordship, how could such as these, have such riches. They say they killed a giant but... I say they sold some cattle and forgot to pay the just taxes."

The rules say he can not but, the story would benefit from a plot twist thrown in by an enterprising referee, and the players have an excuse to have an conflict with an evil bureaucrat (and maybe win).
    Now that's high adventure <gr>!

Nothing is perfect but a good referee with a set of patient (as if<gr>) players and a well written set of rules should help create a fun evening.

It's even worse: 60L is 1 full year of income, not 1 season.

I would argue better, much, much better. The economics of an average (let's pick our fave whipping boy) D&D game boggle my mind and I am not an economist.Wasn't there a crusade IRW that cost a purse of silver to mount?

Shades of a different colour,  p'raps.
