So the equivalent of a buckle, only for a sash?  It is conceivable.  But my own  experience of tying a sash is that it does not need a buckle.  You would only need such a thing if you were incompetent at tying the sash.

Right hip  ... always the right hip?  Perhaps part of a closure system for an upper garment?  Using ties instead of a hook?

Perhaps something tossed in by a funeral attendee prior to burial?

Does it have the magic system from RQ or just the ones from the other BRP games? I haven't bought it because I have a lot of BRP books and am reluctant to keep purchasing the same material over and over. Although, I feel kind of dumb for saying that as I also have several versions of RQ so not sure why that's a deal breaker. It kind of is, though.

    Negative, unfortunately.

Chaosium does still sell a PDF (The Magic Book) that contains it though, tucked into the "Home/Basic Roleplaying/BRP Classic/..." section of their site.

I understood the question about "other games" and at least some of the responses to that question to include things outside of the BRP family.  My question was a follow-up to that.

I believe site etiquette is that the BRP forum is for BRP itself, and games derived from it that have no named forum of their own. Other games that are outside the BRP/Pendragon/QuestWorlds ancestry are generally discussed in the forum labeled Alistor's Skull Inn, near the bottom of the list. 🙂

  4. My copy just arrived today, and all I have to say is WOW!

Love the paper... a nice light matte surface (but not white), providing great levels of contrast with minimal (almost no) reflection! Makes things very readable in bright light with multiple sources. Brown tones contrast nicely for headers and tables, again keeping things very readable.

Love the illustrations, just the right amount of color to stand out, without overpowering everything else around them.

Thanks folks... now just need the time to actually go through page by page!

I think Nick is on the right path here.  The fact that fixed personality "types" seem too narrow and limited won't be remedied by expanding the list -- they'll just highlight a narrower range of exceptions that the players come up with.  Elsewhere, I was involved in a similar discussion about the inadequacy of cultural backgrounds like Primitive, Barbarian, and Civilised, in that they front-load stereotypes that aren't necessarily helpful for individuals (and that are woefully outdated academically).  Passions are ripe for the picking on p.214.

Passions are certainly part of the equation. And while the cultural types were ok-ish for a game from the '80s, they certainly don't work now, and as you point out they are academically outdated. Nomadic, Rural, and Urban are my current choices for cultural backgrounds; haven't really come up with a replacement for Primitive that I like, might just stick with Band (from MW). A "society" in game would be composed mainly of two of these types.

I revised the version from step 5 of Elric! CG for 6 Outlooks in Magic World (see here:

Bingo. I probably read it and it stuck in the back of my mind. That's why the table in BRP feels off! Thanks!

My first instinct re personality traits etc would be to use Passions: all PCs start with three, one each linked to  Culture, Profession and Personality type. And I’d let the player decide (I always prefer the system telling the player to link mechanical things to the PCs history & personality but letting them define the details…). If I were to use them with the Personality Traits, I’d say pick a trait and apply a +10/+15/+20/+25 (depending on Campaign level).

I thought about Passions, but am changing focus of some things. Im toying with the idea of using Personality Traits as a focus for external sources. powers, artifacts, a sanity mechanic, and so on.

If I were going to do this, I'd probably use someone's pre-existing system (like Myers-Briggs or Enneagram), and gamify those.

Taking a quick gander, Enneagram looks useable. Even defines vices and virtues for its categories, which may be more easier to map onto Traits. Nine types though... hmmm.

Myers-Briggs looks to have a lot of baggage associated with it, along with it being something of a matrix model with 16 possibilites (a bit less adaptable, at least for my poor brain). Something that used Myers-Briggs as a jumping off point is the Keirsey Temperament Sorter which starts with four categories, and then further subdivides by either two or four per category (this last mapping onto Myers-Briggs). This appears more adaptable, at least based on the language used on Wikipedia.

Out of curiosity, what made you suggest these rather involved models as a starting point?

And something of an observation. None of these models seem to have a personality type/temperament where action is the primary ... choice?

  8. I've been thinking about how to use the Personality Type (p.11 UGE), and come to the realization that it's somewhat small, and that perhaps the distribution is off. This isn't different from the BGB, it just that I've been looking recently.

If we wanted to expand it a bit, say to six personality types (so a d6 can be used in a pinch), how would you break up what's there, or would you add? Also, in the expanded list, if you were to add % ranges for each, what would they be? I understand about cultural variables, and so on; but for the moment assume a generic table.

In addition, If you were to add a single Personality Trait bonus/malus (rated on %; use the Pendragon table rather than the one in UGE) to each, what would it be?

    Thanks!

I think they are the same book but like a 2 page difference if any at all besides the cover or adds at the back?

Yes, the one on the left (printed by Cubicle 7) is a later printing. I'm not sure there is any difference in the text.

Nothing exists until it is created. I see a clear need for a shaman-free ancestor type worship with the head of the house holding a Priest/Godtalker position.

Why deal with all the other types of spirit that a shaman deals with, if you are only concerned with ones family tree? These skils of Spirit Dance and Spirit Combat are extranious in this type of a situation. Imagine a family run Merchant house whihc traces its roots to the founder, who maybe contacted and may be able to teach some sort of magic or skill which is particular to this family. Why would being a shaman be a requirement for the head of the family?

Ancestor Worship certainly doesn't need a "Shaman", only an officiant that can communicate with ancestors. However, I would argue that above this officiant there would probably be a Shaman somewhere that would be able to teach the officiant the proper forms and rituals needed for ancestral interaction. Also, perhaps, to go out and find "gramps" again, as he seems to be incommunicado and wandering again JUST when he is needed!

You could keep everything within a family/organization, and hand down things internally, sans Shaman, but then you have the pleasure of possibly writing up variations for each family/organization that you create. Also, a way would have to be established for the learning of magic that an Ancestor lacks, as I imagine things would be restricted to only those spells that the Ancestor knew in life.

Posting on your own website/blog and then syndicating your content to social media sites means that people can access your content regardless of where they look for it.

Speaking of which, there used to be apps that allowed you to blog, and then have that entry be copied over to other sites. I think (dim memory) that there was one of these that would even split up an entry to fit Twit...'s post limit (when that was a thing).

Don't these still exist? Do they not work with Facebook?

If you are a Facebook member of the Runequest Group, and you haven't noticed much lately due to their mysterious algorithm, you can always click on the group to see recent posts from that group.  Sometimes I have to do that.

As for privacy etc., yes, there are concerns.  😞

This is true. But you would think that if you've "Followed" or "Joined" something that the algorithm would be changed slightly. And it may, in fact, change ever so so slightly, but not enough to be noticeable. I get far more Far Side (which I'm actually NOT complaining about) in my feed, and I haven't followed that; compared to all the groups that I have joined or followed combined. That's odd.

Even when I pop into the groups, it's hard to parse much as there are generally NO titles to any of the posts, so you have to begin to actually read what's written. Do this enough, and all of a sudden you are out of reading time and really haven't gained much that you might be interested in. For example, I'm pretty certain that I have only seen probably a tenth of the things that @Jeff posts.

Its just a poor design as an information resource.

I was looking through the Well and this forum for some information on Talor and it should also be noted that nothing that is on Facebook is indexed. And even on Facebook their search engine is notoriously bad.

Edit: yes, I really dislike Facebook. 🙂

Yeah, Facebook, as an information source, really boils down to how well their algorithm works for you. Sometimes I get notified, sometimes not.

I'm going through my scribble ideas journal and considering writing up a longer (100+ pages) project. Which sounds most interesting for your games? All are set roughly in Dragon Pass.

N.b. I'm not promising any of these (or even that a long project would be for RuneQuest, cuz I have some fun fiction ideas I'd like to write, too). Right now, just looking to gauge community interest in various ideas.

    Have you seen... THIS?

  15. The only people that are going to pay attention to kids are other kids... so if the opposition has children, there is the valid opposition. The opposition children will probably have the same issue trying to make the adults in their group take them seriously though.

The only others that will take kids seriously will be those that are on the receiving end of their antics... think Home Alone.

  16. Animism -> Theism is a road that has many stops (combinations) along it, a progression. Wizardry (Gloranthan Sorcery*) is a humanist practice/aqusition and expansion of those methods that fits within the social and faith structures of The West and is diaspora.

    * A Sorcerer is really that enemy magician over in the other valley that binds spirits and ancestors rather than negotiating with or revering them, the one who treats with Broos and sends evil spirits against the good folk of your Clan

Yes, indeed, I like very much this kind of approach, I do the same with Elmal in a way.

Perhaps even have that cadre of Ernaldans protected by displaced Elmali... that way you can tie things up in one package! 🙂
