Bergguy
From the Runequest Core Rulebook... "The Pure Horse People worship an ancient Fire/Sky pantheon headed by Yelm, whom they call Yu-Kargzant the Sun Horse. Arandayla the Horse Goddess is beloved by all and Hyalor the Rider is revered as the first king of the people at the Dawn." Is there information out there on this pantheon? I've looked through the guide and it says approximately the same phrase. Is there a list of Gods that the Grazelander horse-people would worship? Not the vendref, the pure-horse people themselves. Thanks for the info!
Leingod
There's a list of Grazer gods on pg. 90-91 of King of Sartar. Quote Yu-Kargzant, the Imperial Sun, whose secrets were brought back to the Ancestors by Harfraftos the Founder. La-ungariant, First Wife of Yu‑Kargzant, and goddess of the women of the people. She is mother of Josad, Henird, Jardan, and Dastal. Josad, the Elder. He is the first son of Yu‑Kargzant, and knows so much that he is on every council which is called. Henird, the Leader is the god who knows all of the skills which a herdsman must know to be wise. They are the skills of fathers and husbands, musicians and poets, of herding and avoiding the Other Side. Jardan, the Warrior, is the patron of archers, lancers, and all who would strive face‑to‑face against their foes. His master warriors are called the Golden Bow. Dastal, the Hunter, is the god of young men who are undergoing the years‑long manhood rites. He is also the god of hunting, herding, and learning. Arandayla, the Horse Goddess, is beloved by all, for she is the source of life and status. She serves, but she serves best when loved. Hyalor the Rider, who was the first king of the people at the Dawning, and who made our folk great, and who tamed the Horse Goddess. Orest, Earth Mother, who gives forth all life. The mountains are her children. Tamar, Lord of Wild Beasts, whose children are the beasts which are either food or foe. Tara, Lady of the Wild, who holds all of the secrets and terrors of the places where horses can not go. Pole Star, Lord of the Night and Captain of the Star Army. The four sons of Yu-Kargzant are likely just used as the local names/forms of the Imperial Sun's sub-cults (Dastal for Yelm the Youth, etc.). La-ungariant is essentially Dendara, Orest is essentially Ernalda. 4
Bergguy
Perfect! Thank you! I haven't had a chance to do a deep-dive into the Stafford Library yet for information. Being directed to a source is really helpful!
Nick Brooke
HeroQuest Voices has accounts from a Grazelander father and shaman, I’ll dig out the link. Those were written back in 2003 but there should be plenty you can loot. Quote Community Ambassador - Jonstown Compendium, Chaosium, Inc. David Scott
8 hours ago, Bergguy said: Is there a list of Gods that the Grazelander horse-people would worship? RQG Page 116: Yu-Kargzant the Sun Horse. Arandayla the Horse Goddess Hyalor the Rider La-ungariant (Ernalda) Humakt (Hiia Swordsman) Arandayla the Horse Goddess is Hippoi. Upcoming GoG says Quote Yelm is worshiped by the horse-herding Pure Horse People of the Grazelands, whom they call Yu-Kargzant (which means the “imperial sun”). Among them, all clan chieftains and many tribespeople are Yelm Initiates. They also worship Hyalor and Hippoi. They have no Yelm Imperator subcult, but the Golden Bow is very important for them. The Pure Horse People herd only horses, and never practice agriculture. Ernalda (represented by the Feathered Horse Queen) is worshiped as Yelm’s consort. Jeff
The material on the Grazeland pantheon in King of Sartar largely predates the Feathered Horse Queens and the period of intense transmissions between the Grazelands and Sartar. To make it really easy, here's a cheat sheet of the main deities of the Grazelanders: Ernalda. She has many titles including La-ungariant, but she's Ernalda. She's the most important and powerful cult in the Grazelands. The Feathered Horse Queen is the incarnation of Ernalda and the leader of the cult. About 35% of the population. Yelm. A distant second, he is often called Yu-Kargzant, but he's Yelm. No Imperator subcult, but the Golden Bow is very important. About 20% of the population. Orlanth. Primarily Orlanth Thunderous/Barntar, the Orlanth cult is the main male god of the farmers, but a significant number of Horse Lords worship him as well. They are intensely loyal to the Feathered Horse Queen. About 15% of the population. Humakt. The War God of the Grazelanders, the Humakti are fanatically loyal to the Feathered Horse Queen and primarily come from the farmers. About 5% of the population. Maran Gor. The Goddess of Earthquakes is important here, and is followed by about 5% of the population. Seven Mothers. A substantial number of farmers and Horse Lords have embraced the Lunar Way. About 5% of the population follow the Seven Mothers. Other Lightbringers. About 7% of the population follow the other Seven Lightbringers, with Issaries and Chalana Arroy being most important. 6
