JohannesH
In The Broken Tower, Carthalo the shaman is supposed to help the adventurers by calling the murdered Greydog’s ghost, but he doesn’t seem to have any summoning spells like Summon Ghost or similar. I could of course handwave the thing, but to understand the shamanistic process, can he do that without any spells, and are those summon spells more for common adventurers, and shamans can manage without them? The ghost is already there. When I ran it, Vishi Dunn was in the party and could see and talk to the ghost with a simple Second Sight, I didn't use Carthalo at all. Carthalo could do the same if none of the party had the spell. Edited August 29, 2021 by PhilHibbs
JohannesH
But there is supposed to be a roll to summon the ghost, that the party could augment. What roll, the adventure doesn’t specify.

What roll, the adventure doesn’t specify. You're right, it doesn't, and there isn't one that is possible within the rules as written because as you said Carthalo doesn't have the spell. So you could assume he does have an appropriate spell or ability that isn't listed in his stat block, or work around it some other way. As I said, I don't see the need for a summoning. Ghosts don't need to be specifically summoned by anyone. They can just turn up if they have a reason to, and Second Sight allows you to see and interact with them.

If the ghost is just hanging around, and the Shaman can perform a ritual in the space without interruption, the Shaman can perform that ritual that makes the spirit visible. People who don't know what just happened may think the Shaman performed a summoning spell.

In a way, it might not even be a proper ghost yet - the spirit hangs around the body for seven days regardless (so it's not hard to find it), and the idea is to send it packing with the proper burial ritual so that it doesn't stay and add to the ghost population.
