  1. Fear and Madness aren't really Glorantha-Specific and they traditionally used Specials and Criticals to determine effect.
  2. Intelligent creatures should have APP as they can interact meaningfully with other intelligent creatures. An Orc having APP is no different to a dragon or griffin having APP. Some people might argue that even things like sheep have APP .....
  3. What you really need are scans of the equipment lists from Worlds of Winder, Ringworld and Other Suns. PM me.
  4. OK, so I know this is off-topic for a BRP forum, but they are all the same under the skin, so ..... There's a new Poll on the Mongoose forum at Mongoose Publishing :: View topic - The Gloranthan Encyclopaedia that is asking if people are interested in a new set of Gloranthan sourcebooks that are not system-specific but general Gloranthan books. I know that many people here are not interested in Glorantha, but I also know that there are some people here who don't follow the Mongoose Forum but are interested in things Gloranthan. So, get voting, as long as you are going to say Yes.
  5. To tell the truth, the best way to work out Resistance is an Opposed Roll of Characteristic x 5%. So, a POW vs POW roll is POWx5% vs POWx5%, resisting a strong wind is Wind STRx5% vs (SIZ+STR)x5% and so on. That way you can use skills vs characteristics.
  6. No, she didn't so that took the edge off. There should be a new rule for conventions - don't bring your RPG-Hating wife to a RPG convention. Still, she's talking about coming again next year and looking around nearby towns, so I might not enjoy next year's Tentacles either.
  7. Yep, RQ3 uses MP vs MP, so if your MP goes down you are less able to overcome an opponent and less able to resist. You are less magically powerful the less juice you have. In Gloranthan RQ, one of the advantages of being a Rune Lord was that you could defend with your POW rather than your MPs. RQ2 used POW vs POW, but RQ2 didn't have the concept of MPs, it used Temporary POW and Permanent POW, so your POW ve POW was your current POW (the same as your MPs in RQ3) but most people who played RQ2 still refer to the contest as a "POW vs POW" roll. I like the idea that you get less effective the more MPs you use. It makes powerful NPCs defeatable and makes you careful with your MPs. In any case, as soon as you have some POW Storage Crystals/MP Storage Enchantments or similar items the question becomes moot.
  8. Ah, I see. I haven't played Stormbringer since the first edition and those rules were very simple, so I didn't know what the SB5 rules were. In that case, power levels should be about the same, although parrying seems ridiculously easy in Stormbringer. So, I take back my comments completely.
  9. I think you may have a different idea of what a high skill is than I do OK, Stormbringer 5, from what I understand, has an extra attack at -30%, so someone with 130% can attack twice at 130% and 100%. Someone in RQ attackign twice at 100% needs a skill of 200%. Similarly, attacking 3 times needs a skill of 160% in SB (160%, 130%, 100%) but 300% in RQ (100/100/100). So, someone reasonably powerful in SB who can attack with 3 or 4 automatic hits is at a lower skill level than the equivalent RQ character.
  10. Ah! I see, thanks. As a programmer, when we do that we call it a "Feature" but other poeple call it a "Bug".
  11. New job, new apartment, what's next? You've been a busy boy the last couple of months. Don't forget about Tentacles while you're moving.
  12. Not really. I never used a lot of sorcery in my campaigns. RQ3 sorcery wasn't too bad, but Free INT meant that a beginning sorcerer and a master sorcerer could cast the same strength spell, it just took the beginner longer. I looked over the sorcery in Worlds of Wonder but wasn't particularly impressed. I have read Sandy Petersen's Sorcery rules but didn't understand them and didn't like some of his rules. RQ4 had some improvements in sorcery, as I recall, but they weren't drastic improvements. RQM has a lot of sorcery, as it covers the God Learners/Jrusteli. It has a lot of sorcerous schools each with specialist spells. There are sorcery spells spcifically aimed at making HeroQuesting easier. As to the differences between them, I don't really know. I'm not that interested in sorcery and haven't gone into things in great depth.
  13. RQ2 didn't have sorcery. There was a Chaosium product called "Worlds of Wonder" that contained an early version of sorcery. You can probably find a copy on the web.
  14. [Deleted Because I'm an Idiot ]
  15. I've started using the New Posts function on the Home Page but it shows 0 when there are 2 posts in the Gamers Cavern that are showing as new. Any reason for this or do I have to trawl through the many sub-forums of Gamers Cavern?
  16. That makes sense and allows for the Herculean Grapple as well. So, now we've worked out that a Brontosaurus's stomp can be parried, what other off-topic questions can we answer?
  17. Hah! A RuneQuest question - I can contibute on those without saying I haven't got the rules. Runes were always higher-powered or were for higher beings. Gods were associated with Runes, some had 2 many had three. The Runes influenced the type of magic the god had, to a certain extent, so Storm Gods had storm-based magic, Death gods had death-based magic and so on. Individuals who progressed in cults tried to become Rune Priests or Rune Lords. Rune Lords were considered to have gained the Mastery Rune and Rune Priests were considered to have gained the Magic Rune. And that's about it, really. Seriously, that's as big a contribution as Runes made in RQ1/2/3. The name had virtually nothing to do with the game, really. Various forms of HeroQuest Rules for RQ used runes in various ways, but they were all non-standard houserule systems.
  18. It's like the difference between Rugby Union and Rugby League - they are both forms of Rugby but split a long time ago. One became professional, the other stayed amateur for years and then became professional and now people can switch between codes. So they share a common heritage but are controlled by different bodies and have different rules. They are compatible to a certain extent but are fundamentally different. It's the same with BRP and RQ. Both D100 but with different owners and different rules, but ultimately fairly compatible.
  19. BRP and RQ derive from the same, or similar, rules-sets. I am probably wrong here, but this is how I understand it: BRP derives from Call of Cthulhu and Stormbringer 5 with some RQ3 thrown in. The base Call of Cthulhu are derived from BRP which was a cut-down version of the RQ Rules. The original Stormbringer was based on a similar set of rules to RQ2, but was quite a bit different, it evolved through various Stormbringer and Elric games until Stormbringer 5 which a lot of people consider to be better than RQ3, if such a thing were possible. Mongoose RuneQuest derives somewhat from RQ2 and RQ3 but is heavily different. RQ3 derived from RQ2. RQ1 did exist but is almost the same as RQ2, RQ1 was written for Chaosium and wasn't based on anything else. So, from a system point of view they are similar. However, Chaosium lost the rights to RQ when they sold it to Avalon Hill. They got the rights to the RQ system, but not Glorantha, when Avalon Hill stopped publishing for a number of years (as I understand it) but Greg Stafford's Issaries gained the RQ Trademark and commissioned a new version of RuneQuest. Chaosium brought out BRP which is based on their own rules system. So, they are owned by two different and rival companies and are no longer connected, despite a shared past. BRP is not RuneQuest and RuneQuest is not BRP. But both are d100. I hope that doesn't help.
  20. A lot of systems use D100. MERP and Rolemaster use 1D100 but they couldn't really be classed as similar to the BRP family. I've never seen AikiGhost's "d100 Rules System" but it strikes me that a 1D100 Characteristic system isn't that compatible with BRP-style D100. Going out on a limb, the D100 marker should really apply to games that are similar to Chaosium's BRP-style games, including RQ, Other Suns and various derivatives that I haven't seen but other people have. Other games that use 1D100 should only be included if they are similar in concept. However, it should depend on the publisher as to whether they want to include the D100 Logo on their products. What I wouldn't want is some D100 Committee sitting and declaring from on-high that such-and-such a game is not worthy of the D100 Logo.
  21. That's OK, neither is my site
  22. Last words aside, I'm intrigued by parrying a brontostaurus's stomp. On the face of it, this is clearly silly - a brontosaurus is like the Mother of Monsters in RQ and it's stomp is an area effect in that it can affect more than one person and an area effect can't be parried (can it?) But, imagine a brontosaurus stomping on hercules (What? There weren't brontosauruses in Hercules' time? Thet never bothered the writers of the TV series) he is quite capable of grabbing the foot, holding it in the air and then moving it aside. After all, he once took Atlas's place and held the sky up so a little iddy-biddy brontosaurus shouldn't be a problem. So, excluding magic (Great Parry - ha!), Heroes (Hercules), Gods (Thor is pretty strong) and special abilities, you shouldn't be able to parry a brontosaurus's stomp, but you could dodge out of the way or set a spear for it to stomp on and hope that it's leg gets disabled before it hits you. Of course, hard PCs would take the damage, then pull themselves out of the hole they have just been stomped into, get back up and give the brontosaurus a good kicking.
  23. So, can I use it? Can I? Please?
  24. OK cleverclogs, I've changed it now.
  25. I thought his point was he did want players to have such fine control over character generation. It's funny that two people can read the same thing and interpret it in different ways. That's probably right. It's definitely as good and because it is classless it has some points that are better, unless you prefer classes in which case it isn't as good. Different perhaps, better at some things certainly, better overall? You'd have to look at sales figures to decide that one.
