  1. #RuneQuest update: Recently discovered writings by the late Greg Stafford have revealed the famous "Sable Tribe" of Prax does not ride a type of antelope as long supposed. Instead, as Stafford's first counter designs for his 1975 game WHITE BEAR RED MOON clearly depict, it seems they really get around on giant minks or weasels. Updates will be made to all relevant PDFs.
  2. As you may be aware, Google Plus shuts down on April 2nd, 2019. All G+ groups there including the Chaosium and Glorantha groups will be gone forever! 3. Congratulations on a successful GLORANTHA GAMES one day convention in Birmingham, UK yesterday! The 70 attendees raised over £800 for charity. Joy Phillips won the KHAN OF KHANS tournament. And Callum was excited to win HQG in the raffle - he’s currently running D&D at school so this will be something new to try (and his dad won the Cult of Chaos RUNEQUEST contest too!)

  5. My Chaosium colleague Andrew received his copy of GLORANTHA: THE GODS WAR, so he, me, Susan, and some board gaming buddies gave Sandy's epic board game a go last night. A resounding victory by the powers of the Sea! I really enjoyed playing Sandy's prototype of Glorantha: The Gods War at Gen Con a couple of years ago, but the finished version with the massive minies is even better! A highly enjoyable game we can't wait to play again.

  8. There are two aspects to the delay of the release. First is that we are still awaiting final confirmation that the RQ slipcases have been entered into inventory by the US warehouse (they have already processed the individual books, but it was two 40-foot containers worth of stock to get through...) Second is we thought we had a clever plan to send partial slipcases, but it has proven a bridge too far for our fulfilment agents. Remember—we don’t do our own fulfilment. We work with others to get you your books. And sometimes our contractors want a bit more sanity than we do. We aren’t blaming them, but what we thought they would be able to do proved logistically impossible. It is unfortunate, but in the big scheme of things delaying the release a week so that we can make sure the books get properly fulfilled is a no-brainer. As stated above, if you've already bought a hardcopy of the rules, you'll be getting a second copy of the rules as part of the slipcase coupon deal. Important to note: We will not run out of slipcase sets any time soon. This will be our most complex coupon process *ever*, so we ask for everyone to please be patient! #WeAreAllUs
  9. Extended to Monday, April 1st: 50% off all RuneQuest Classic titles at DriveThruRPG! Plus 13th Age Glorantha, the Glorantha Sourcebook, the Argan Argar Atlas, and Greg Stafford's King of Sartar! http://bit.ly/2Fqq2r7

  12. Sadly, due to an unforeseen processing delay at our US warehouse, we have had to postpone the print release of RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha until next week. As soon as we receive confirmation the books are delivered and in warehouse inventory we will make them available for sale. We anticipate the new release date to be Wednesday April 3. All purchasers of the RQG core rulebook, and of the PDF versions of the RQG Bestiary and GM Screen Pack will receive their coupons by email just prior to the release. Here's how that will work: We are providing coupons for individual books and combination ones for the slipcase sets. We are only selling slipcase sets (containing core rules, Bestiary, and GM Screen Pack) and the individual books. The coupons will offset those that have already bought a hardcopy of RQG - so in effect, if you've already bought a hardcopy of the rules, you'll be getting a second copy of the rules as part of the slipcase coupon deal. We are not selling partial sets, or empty slipcases due to the shipping challenges involved. We will not run out of slipcase sets any time soon. We expect there to be a need for custom coupons. Some people ordered different products with different accounts, and want to merge items. They will be processed as requested. This will be our most complex coupon process ever, so we ask for everyone to please be patient! https://www.chaosium.com/blogrelease-of-rqg-delayed-to-next-week
  13. Australian RPG writer Geoff Gillan was one of the key masterminds behind the original Horror on the Orient Express, and has credits in a variety of Chaosium releases, for Call of Cthulhu, Pendragon, Elric and Stormbringer. Geoff also contributed to Terror Australis, the new Australian sourcebook for Call of Cthulhu, where he says "it was a pleasing chance to use my Bachelor’s Degree in History to such fiendish ends." https://www.chaosium.com/bloggeoff-gillan-on-terror-australis
  14. Australian Call of Cthulhu writer Phil Anderson (Horror on the Orient Express, Fearful Passages, Beyond the Mountains of Madness) is one of the contributors to TERROR AUSTRALIS. He says, "Writing Call of Cthulhu adventures is always an interesting ride, giving you opportunity for a deep dive into history, culture, psychology, and the weird. Unlike the epic fantasy genre, Lovecraftian adventures need to be rooted enough in the real world to deepen that sense of contrast when the outlandish begins to unfold." https://www.chaosium.com/blogterror-australis-with-australian-call-of-cthulhu-author-phil-anderson-

Now available in full colour hardcover! https://www.chaosium.com/terror-australis-2nd-edition-hardcover In Australia, investigators will come face-to-face with supernatural forces that have endured for longer than humanity has existed. A land of adventure, danger, and ageless wisdom—a perfect for setting for Call of Cthulhu! Long time Chaosium writer Richard Watts (Call of Cthulhu, Stormbringer, Elric) says, "I adored researching for and contributing to Terror Australis. It’s the first new material I’ve written for Call of Cthulhu in many years. I hope it won’t be my last."https://www.chaosium.com/blogtalking-to-chaosium-writer-richard-watts-about-terror-australis- "For those who have never been to the outback, that immensity of land beyond Australia’s cities, it is almost impossible to explain its lure", writes Marion Anderson (Beyond the Mountains of Madness, Horror on the Orient Express, Cairo Guidebook) about the scenario "A Long Way Home" in TERROR AUSTRALIS:https://www.chaosium.com/blogwriting-for-terror-australis-by-marion-anderson

  21. Call of Cthulhu line editor Mike Mason on the passing of Larry DiTillio: https://www.chaosium.com/bloglarry-ditillio-visionary-game-designer-and-writer-19402019 Larry DiTillio, Visionary Game Designer and Writer, 1940-2019 I woke up this morning to discover the news that Larry DiTillio had passed. Larry was a force to be reckoned with, whether in the gaming or entertainment industries, and a man whose contribution to the Call of Cthulhu RPGcannot be understated. Before he went on to create, write, and story edit for television, Larry’s first love was tabletop gaming. You can see his work in many early Chaosium books, like Ye Book of Monsters (Vol I & II), H. P. Lovecraft’s Dreamlands, Terror Australis (first ed.), Demon Magic for Stormbringer, and numerous pieces in Chaosium’s old house magazine, Different Worlds. But, most importantly, Larry created Masks of Nyarlathotep for Chaosium, setting out a vision for how a Call of Cthulhu campaign could be, and in so doing, started a revolution in scenario design whose effects are still felt today. While Chaosium had already published the Shadows of Yog-Sothoth and Fungi From Yuggoth campaigns, Masks was bigger, more epic, more dynamic, and had at its heart a story of human frailty corrupted by the designs of the Cthulhu Mythos. Rather than an unseen force, Masks placed its central antagonist front and center, making Nyarlathotep a living and breathing character in the campaign, and a very real foil to the player-investigators. Larry stated that the idea for Masks came to him after writing a biography about Jomo Kenyatta for a television show. Chaosium had asked for something more than “just another haunted house scenario,” so Larry used his knowledge of Africa to work up a plot concerning a missing expedition – the Carlyle Expedition. From that, Masks was born and the rest is history. Masks of Nyarlathotep was an immediate success, winning awards and creating many hours of game play for groups around the world. It’s a fact that if you’ve ever played in the campaign, then you have a “war story” to tell – usually concerning some epic character death or the crazy antics your investigators got up to in the pursuit of the Carlyle Expedition. What’s important here is that the campaign’s story was so engaging that it naturally made for great roleplaying. Apart from the threat of the Outer God itself, Larry’s cults were tangible and real, and didn’t work in isolation – they talked to one another, cooperating to fulfil their plan while also hunting down and making the lives of the investigators that much harder. In so doing, Larry made the world of the game come to life, rejecting the notion of static non-player characters who only “woke up” when encountered by a player character. When I came to work on the new edition of Masks of Nyarlathotep I got to speak and work with Larry. While he’d been out of the gaming scene for some time, focusing his attention on numerous shows like He-Man, She-Ra, Beast Wars, Murder She Wrote, The Real Ghostbusters, and one of my personal favorites, Babylon 5, Larry’s love of gaming still came through. We talked about the new edition and updating the text, and Larry was glad that Masks would receive the love and attention it deserved. He was never less than fully supportive and eager to see the new edition, which he was very pleased with. It was an honor to chat with him about the game, his views on Cthulhu in various media, and the new Lovecraft inspired television series that are in the works – he even mentioned a desire to write his own Cthulhu Mythos TV show, something that would have been awesome, but unfortunately something that will now never happen. As I mentioned at the start, Larry’s creation of the Masks of Nyarlathotep began a revolution in scenario design. With its success, it helped to propel the Call of Cthulhu game into wider consciousness, enticing those who had yet to feel the call of the Great Old Ones to pick up the game and give it a try. One of the reasons why so many people play and continue to play Call of Cthulhu is down to Larry. And for that, Larry’s contribution cannot be underestimated. Thank you, Larry, for your insight, your creativity, and your wisdom. You will be missed. Mike Mason March 2019
  22. We here at Chaosium just heard the sad news of Larry DiTillio's passing. Among his many creative accomplishments, Larry was of course the genius behind Call of Cthulhu's Masks of Nyarlathotep, considered by many to be the greatest #rpg campaign of all time. Vale. J. Michael Straczynski's eulogy here (Facebook link):
  23. Many thanks - that is our aim! Is the Ecclesiarch a Rokari? What does a jack-o-bear do in the woods?
  24. Here is the blurb: BERLIN: THE WICKED CITY Unveiling The Mythos in Weimar Berlin CHA23161-H MSRP $44.99 ISBN-13: 9781568824178 Hardcover 272 pages By David Larkins with Mike Mason & Lynne Hardy The Wickedest City on Earth In the aftermath of the Great War, Berlin maintains a reputation for licentiousness. A place where anything can be had for the right price. It is a city of both hedonism and business; its streets overflow with disabled veterans, prostitutes, destitute immigrants, and political agitators—all rubbing shoulders with buttoned-down businessmen, scholars, and artists. The gutters run with the blood of political assassinations, where Communists and völkisch Nationalists clash with each other and the police. Long into the evenings, Berlin’s world-famous cabarets offer music, dance, and titillating entertainment in stark contrast to the gray buildings that run on for endless miles along the sprawling city’s byways. Into this bubbling stew, Berlin The Wicked City introduces the weird elements of the Cthulhu Mythos—a hotbed of secret organizations, sinister cults, and half-whispered lore. Amid the wicked air of the world’s capital of sin, the very nature of what it means to be human is questioned. And as the city hurtles toward its inevitable dark destiny, the oppressive atmosphere pushes the sanity of investigators to its breaking point. This book presents an overview of 1920s Berlin as it would be experienced by visitors and residents of the time. Guidelines are presented for creating investigators for Berlin-centric campaigns, as well as investigator organizations to help bind groups together. Find notable personalities, key locations, and a system for generating details of the urban landscape on the fly. With the city’s crime and punishment, underworld, and high culture detailed, the tools provided help the Keeper gain an understanding of what makes Berlin unique—and dangerous. Three scenarios, spanning the history of Berlin between the end of the Great War and the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, contain colorful details of Berlin and its inhabitants, and may be run as stand-alone adventures or linked together to form a mini-campaign. In The Devil Eats Flies, Germany teeters on the brink of economic ruin and political chaos. The ghost of a madman stalks the city, turning its own citizenry against itself. To stop a demonic spirit and save a Russian princess in exile, the investigators must strike a bargain with other sinister forces and ask themselves: who else are we prepared to see die in order to save the city? Dances of Vice, Horror, and Ecstasy takes place in the city’s golden years, when Berlin becomes superficially stable and prosperous again. A bungling sorcerer, a debauched dancer, and a strange cult of gnostic Saturn-worshippers threaten to put all of that to an end and turn Berlin into a pit of madness and depravity. Schreckfilm sees Berlin racing toward its grim future. The investigators come face to face with a shadowy cabal of the city’s movers and shakers, determined to turn the city’s world-famous film industry toward ill ends. Trapped in a labyrinth of their own making and hounded relentlessly by dark forces beyond their ken, the investigators must confront the fundamental question of what is real and what is illusion. For Mature Readers: This book deals with mature themes, including drugs and sex, and is intended for mature players. This supplement is best used with the CALL OF CTHULHU (7th Edition) roleplaying game and optionally PULP CTHULHU, both available separately. Bits and Mortar gets the PDF when the hardback book goes into retail distribution (July).
