IMG_9432.jpgVistas of New Pavis Seminar

Sunday 30th July 2023, 11am

New Pavis, Prax. Glorantha.

This city has been part of our shared imaginings of Glorantha since it was first revealed in 1983, when Chaosium published the boxed set "Pavis, Threshold to Danger".

Vistas of New Pavis, my walking tour picture book of New Pavis, that's heading for Jonstown Compendium, on DriveThru RPG, is coming to Continuum 2023 (Leicester, UK. 28th-31st August 2023 https://continuumconvention.co.uk/) on the very PC I'm using for creation!

The city is being built lovingly in 3D, rendered with professional tools, and will be published as a collection of photos in a kind of coffee table book: showcasing the city and every street, every temple, and every interesting Vista discovered during my five year stay in New Pavis. An invaluable RPG play aid that will bring the city to life; and you closer to actually paying a visit.

I am conducting my seminar on the Sunday morning to show off New Pavis live in full 3D, and give attendees the guided tour, using the University's great big 60 inch TV. A few people will also be able to put on the Virtual Reality headset and finally, fully immerse themselves in Glorantha, among the mean streets.

The seminar will be interactive, and New Pavis will be fully live. We will wander the city at will, and see the sights together!

You see here a photomontage of excerpts from Vistas of New Pavis. I will also be bringing an example draft of the book on my tablet.

Hello, and thanks so much for your kind interest!

I’m doing my absolute best to make New Pavis in as realistic a way as possible,

This includes (but not limited to): proper sun placement; Sky Dome; modelling some people (actually a low detail model for every one of the population figures published by Jeff Richard of Chaosium); as many statues as I can manage; river life; the inside of a few key buildings (e.g. Gimpy’s); wagon tracks and footprints in the dirt, or mud; environmentals such as rain, fog, smoke (watch out for it lazily drifting from the nostrils of the Storm Bull bust! Maybe during holy day rituals it actually jets violently from the God's nose!? Inspired!), fire, water; and much, much more like: as much street art as I can make, or have made.

However I can’t make it available live without giving you access directly to my computer, which is why (as often as I can afford to) I bring it to conventions in whatever form I can travel with it to them. The book (Vistas of New Pavis, Jonstown Compendium, this year) will have every view that would be useful or inspiring for gaming in New Pavis, as well as things just added to look at and enjoy.

So far, addition to Continuum, it has made it Germany as well to the Kraken and been shown it to the luminaries gathered there from all over the world, including some names you might know: Sandy Petersen, Fabian Küchler, and RuneQuest line editor Jason Durall.

Every single one of the wonderful people that has either sat through my seminar, or with me under a shady arch, has not only been superbly encouraging, but also really generous with their advice and their time. Their contributions are valued extremely highly and continue to this day through the private Facebook group I set up some years ago. I’m sorry that only a select few can get access to that; it’s for contributors only.

|Here is another preview for you to get a visual update on progress. I do post some on the RuneQuest and Glorantha Fans groups from time to time.

Cheers, and again, thanks for your interest! Speed the word, if you would be so kind!

All we need now is a "Mount and Blade" compatible Prax mod, or equivalent and we could walk around in it.

@PavisBuilder - MatthewCole brought his mini-computer to Continuum last year. While the lights didn't flicker when he plugged it in, due to the enormous strain on the local power supply, he did a presentation of Pavis so far and it was wonderful.

He then let people have a go with some VR headsets and I watched them. Reactions included "Wow!", "Oh wow!", "That's amazing!", "Is that the [place], wow" and so on. I didn't have much time when I had my go, as I had a game to run, but I jumped from rooftop to rooftop from Rich Hill all the way down to the river and it was marvellous. Looking up at the walls of the Big Rubble made me dizzy. Standing on a ledge outside someone's window and looking down gave me vertigo. The whole experience was absolutely amazing and I would recommend having a go if you get the chance.

Hopefully he can bring it again this year.
