  1. Ducks were part of the inhuman occupation of Dragon Pass i.e. they survived in the area after the Dragonkill War. Humans came back about 150 years later (Glorantha Sourcebook p10).   4. I am not aware of any maps of Duck Ferry. The two duck places with good maps I know of are Duck Rock "Bad day at Duck Rock", which is similar in size to Apple Lane and has an inn and a store so might fit your needs or Redfeather Safe (Duckpac) which is a single building duck "village" on stilts

  7. I am super interested in this too. What did you use as your starting point? Pavis: Gateway to adventure has a few details not found in Pavis and the Big Rubble, but I am not sure how canonical they are now.

  9. Ian, the runespell idea works well to protect the Temple, but do the cultists never come out of their sacred precinct into the city without some sort of magic protection active? If not, does that not greatly limit what they can do? i.e. zero "integration" into society, so no possibility to act as a 5th column
  10. We also dont play that those make you Chaotic and I agree on the poetic licence contradictions. In addition, we also dont play that unknowingly eating something Chaotic makes you Chaotic otherwise Chaos can too easily make large proportions of the population chaotic (cue the sausages from the WFRP adventure Sing for your Supper from Plundered Vaults)
  11. Do people with chaos taint never sleep? How do you avoid detection with 15m range under those circumstances? The Storm Bull priest (plus entourage) walks around the town at random times of the day/night once a week, Krarsht Temple/cult detected.

  15. Linked to the recent discussion on Sense Chaos, how do you gain a chaos taint/rune if you are not born with it? Greg sez (https://wellofdaliath.chaosium.com/home/gloranthan-documents/greg-sez/chaos-taints-qa/) there are the passive ways (handling chaos tools or eating something chaotic) or the active (dedicating to a chaos entity or participating in chaos rites and knowingly initiate to a chaos cult). All these are clear cut, but what about the "act chaotically" category? The examples given for this are rape, cannibalism etc, but when does "acting against the norm for society" (whatever that means) translate into chaos rather than just being a nasty piece of work? For example in Gloomwillow's Hollow (Pegasus plateau and other stories), Jafoska Warm-Heart and Baran the Chop "regularly murder, rob, and butcher guests, offering their corpses to the ghouls in return for their continued safety" and seem unable to "quit their ghoulish habit". Why is this evil and not deserving a chaos taint/rune? What is required to cross that barrier?

How is this possible? The Garhound Contest/Melisande's Hand (Sun County), with an Ogre as one of the contestants The Corn Dolls (Sandheart volume 2), with a hidden cult of Mallia The Coming Storm, with the whole Red Cow clan and Ogres issue Bad Day at Duck Rock, with hidden ogres and Thanatari The Lost Valley scenarios (The Smoking Ruin and other stories), which may play out very differently with Harawin Moonsister radiating her 35% chaos rune to any Storm Bull in the party How a cult of Cult of Krarsht (30 initiates, hidden temple building R-49) operates in Pavis, which has a Storm Bull Temple and 60 initiates living there How Judge Dahak is able to go occasionally to New Pavis (with its Storm Bull Temple) to "drink and gamble" despite being an ogre, sorcerer and chaos cultist Nochet (hidden Ogre) Applefest, Mircanda (hidden Ogre) Applefest 2, Hostilus and Nevi Fleethorse both trying to hide in plain sight while radiating chaos rune The whole vagueness of within 15m helps, but any party worth its salt will get around this, as will any half-competent settlement (as Ian has pointed out). Sense chaos requiring concentration and/or MP use helps mitigate the problems, but does not solve them. Having it work only when chaos association is very high can also help, but Ogres have base 60% chaos rune and most cultists of Mallia, Thanatar and Krarsht are likely to be equally high. YGMV, but in mine Sense Chaos only detects entries in the "Chaos Monsters" section of the Bestiary and equivalent (excluding Ogres cos of hand-wavyium). This enables Storm Bulls to do their fighting chaos routine without acting as massive spoilers for any "hidden cult/cultist" scenarios/settings.

Ogres: "Ogres look very human, generally passing for human in all walks of civilization" (runes include chaos 60%) How do they get away with this anywhere where Storm Bulls make up more than 1% of the population? How can Jarst Daro "The Mysterious Stranger" in the Garhound festival (Sun County) not instantly be detected as an Ogre at a major festival in a town of nearly 1000 people + visitors, including with one of the other contestants being a Storm Bull initiate? Sense chaos is a nice skill in a D&D type adventure to spot the ambush, it is a massive spoiler in most other situations.
  18. A singular storm bull does not provide auto detection. Now have 60 of them in Pavis including a Storm Lord, plus visiting members of the Praxian tribes. How does the cult of Krasht of the Waiting Mouth still have a clandestine network there?

While Storm Bull may be a "small cult", there are supposedly 60 Storm Bull initiates within Pavis and thousands amongst the tribes of Prax. 7% of the Bison tribe, 10% of the Rhino tribe worship Storm Bull. yes they are a "small cult", but there will be initiates present nearly everywhere and as Ian points out this causes issues. Many may be "largely occupied", but that still leaves enough to thwart anyone with the slightest trace of chaos doing anything ever nearly anywhere without being sensed. If any Storm Bull initiate can sense any chaos lots of possible plots cannot work, this skill is the ultimate "spoiler". This includes in official Glorantha products over the years.

  22. In Runequest demi-birds are powerful melee weapons, helped by the mental link with their riders. I assume they are most vulnerable to attacks from their flanks and the role of the riders melee weapon is to protect them from that (directly or indirectly). However, the Bestiary p109 picture suggests that the rider is too high off the ground to use a Klanth to parry most blows aimed at his mount (riders toes must be circa 2m off the ground)
  23. As I put together more models for a Pavis campaign, a question arose. Dragonewts use three types of one-handed sword (Klanth, Korff and Gami), daggers or various missile weapons, but are other melee weapons used when riding demi-birds? The picture on p109 of the Bestiary suggests a one-handed sword might not be the ideal weapon when mounted on a demi-bird (unless the rider is willing to lean a long way down from the saddle to hit certain enemies) and spear armed figures have been made (e.g. Lance and Lasers Miniatures). Are other melee weapons used when mounted?

As others have already said I think the grand plan is linked to the Green Age and the restoration of Genert's garden (Pavis was built where it is as there was an oasis here, a link back to the Green Age protected by Mani's clan, with the Dyflings having a direct link back to Grandfather Genert and the defence of the garden from the legions of Ragnaglar - The good the bad and the rowdy, page 70). Uleria (the last of the celestial court) and Mostal are the key players in the plan, not the priests of Pavis. Uleria and Urtiam (= Mostal) were the parents of Darhudan = Daka Fel = Grandfather Mortal and the creators of the Man rune. By rewinding history to the green age, the Man rune can be made anew, the spike and the world machine are renewed and this time (with knowledge from the future) Uleria can ensure the celestial court does not spend all its time in endless debate (Guide to Glorantha), but instead prevents the chaos wars - even perhaps just by preventing the fall of her daughter Sesiene (one of the Tilntae) to fear and chaos (without her power of temptation chaos would never have become so powerful). Part of the plot requires Pavis / Uleria to invoke all three aspects of Uleria, with the Getenak Tradition (The good the bad and the rowdy page 71) and there sacred time tradition (page 77) having clear links to Uleria. As this is far too simple there have to be some twists and complications. Perhaps: 1) "Back to the Future 2" subplot: As part of the plan to ensure chaos never has any chance to become as powerful second time round the Eye of Wakboth (which currently may lie under the Old Market Square of Pavis = the devils playground) must be destroyed in such a way that it never existed (lacking one eye would make Wakboth much less dangerous should things come to pass that Storm Bull must defeat him again). This has been tried once before by Bisjoe Boggle-Eater (The city that time forgot page 80-82), but the "second brigade of Flintnail Dwarfs" (from the future) messed up the time-travel timing and arrived after he was slain. This time round the PCs help get the timing right and this is the "more powerful chaos-cleansing expedition"(page 82). 2) Both eyes of Wakboth lie under the Big Rubble. Looking at Simon Phipps map of the Big Rubble (https://www.soltakss.com/bigrubblemap1.html) there is clearly a face with the eyes being Blind King's Hill and Mani's Fort (and the nose being Ogre island). The artifact in the sacred cave of the Dyflings has neutralized the chaotic power of the second eye, now to just sort out the other. 3) The shape of Ogre island is clearly not a nose, but links strongly to an aspect of Uleria 4) We never know who Pavis parents are because he is actually one of the Tilntae (who are often the mothers/fathers of nations, The Earth Goddesses p129). Also read the description of the "man who walked with Pavis" (City on the edge of forever" p52-54, where the "spell of this eloquent half-elf" etc fits with my image of the powers of the Tilntae). As Pavis / Uleria need to invoke all three aspects of Uleria, we get into Oediupus territory. Even if it does not go this way Pavis could be an initiate of Uleria.
