  1. You need to use the special summoning formula : @StevePerrin
  2. For which of the books :-) If you arrange the back and front covers of the three books around your head you will see a 360 panorama of Prax from the top of the Eiritha Hills:-) Maybe.
  3. Something I never noticed about this piece of art was who had initialled it. Along with DCB and the usual @Dogboy glyph, we've also FGS 1994. FGS is a rare sight.
  4. I think we have to differentiate between old Pavis walls - Roger Raup really captured this for me. And new Pavis walls which the last picture captures. The content of the first picture inside the walls is still valid for me.
  5. I've added the original art direction that was in a separate thread to the top of this one in keeping with the week 3 descriptions. Not as detailed as you'd think :-)
  6. Please continue. This is a rare moment where we have two renowned artists of the Gloranthan world (@Dogboy and @JanPospisil) along with @M Helsdon who has done sterling work on the weaponry and armour of Glorantha and who @Jeff has been using as reference. Moving the thread would break it, contiuning is relevant as the Praxians don't make their own metal weapons an are reliant on foreign traders and what they can steal.
  7. No I just said that I assume the swordpeople are the ones with swords. Personally I did some kendo in my youth. So I probably have a little idea of what martial arts can cover.

Given that this was a stretch goal for 13th Age Glorantha with an adventure and the date of that is around 1627, no. The demigoddess Scorpion Queen of Jab plays a big role in our $95k stretch goal. Here are some art notes on her: She has the chest, head, and arms of a woman, but the abdomen and legs of a grotesquely huge scorpion and two venomous tails (draft shows only one tail - final will show both)! She is some 3 meters tall and over 8 meters long. Woman body: Gagix has the chest, head, and arms of a queenly woman. She has long black hair, yellow eyes, and wears a golden diadem with the Runes of Chaos, Beast, and Man given to her by the previous Lunar Governor-General of Dragon Pass. Her teeth are sharp and there is blood around her mouth. She is watching the Red Goddess priestess with regal interest. She wears a vest or bodice (note: she is NOT busty - she is not truly mammalian). Her arms are covered in jewelry taken from her dead victims, and she has many necklaces draped around her neck. She is NOT tattooed. Around her waist (which connects to her scorpion body), she wears a loose girdle of human heads. Scorpion body: Gagix has the abdomen, tail, stinger, and eight legs of a gigantic, bloated, black scorpion. She does not have pincers or Chelicerae. Her scorpion body is over 8 meters long.
  9. Or it has grown magically over the ages and gives the appearance of being unchanging.
  10. It's as good a theory as any, with this being a good place to bring it up again.
  11. I imagined this with sloping roofs and the paths winding between them, and the hatches in the roofs.

  13. Western Section discussion! Main thread: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6492-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-week-3/ Week 3 errors: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6432-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-week-3-errors/ Here's one of the sketches for the Western illustration by Jeff Laubenstein Here's the original art direction from 2012 (links not checked): Westerners Overview Rational, materialist, and humanist, Western culture is derived from the atheist immortal philosophers that once dominated the far west reaches of the world. They are Bronze or Early Iron Age in material culture and comparable to the rich Hellenistic Greco-Indian kingdoms of the 3rd century BC to the 1st century AD. Their society is divided into four hereditary castes (that of Wizard, Noble, Soldier, and Worker), each with its own rules and restrictions. They are famed for their powerful sorcerer - logical "scientists" of the magical structure of the world who reject worshiping the magical forces in the world, instead they impose their own will upon the world. The Westerners tend towards light skin (ranging from pale to olive), with blueish-black, brown, yellow, or red hair. However, dark skin is prevalent in the southeastern provinces of Seshnela. Facial hair is regulated by caste; wizards must grow long beards, whereas nobles must shave their chin, etc. Each caste has its own distinctive clothing and attire. Men and women typically wear a length of fabric, wrapped around the waist. The laboring castes also often wear a vest, tunic, or blouse. In the cold lands of Fronela, cloaks (similar to the Greek himation or chlamys) are worn. The type and quality of fabric depends on the caste. As a general rule, the Nobles wear less clothing than the lower castes; the Noble soften wear little more than a skirt, while Workers (considered to be more physically imperfect) tend to be more covered up. Weapons are Bronze or Early Iron Age, and the Westerners are renowned for their heavy cavalry (cataphracts) and their fierce foot Soldiers, which fight with spears, swords, and crossbows. Fig. 1. Pithdaran wizard-priest. Pithdaros is a province in Seshnela, populated by the descendants of Agimori (Doraddi) who embraced Western ways nearly a thousand years ago. The Pithdarans are noted for the mental keenness and learning of their wizard-priests. Caste divisions and restrictions are rigidly enforced throughout Seshnela and obedience to caste law is thought to be the basis of civilization. Western wizard-priests are called zzaburi and constitute the “blue caste”. They learn the arts of wizardry. Zzaburi are philosophers, religious functionaries, scribes, and of course, magicians. In wartime, they support the Soldiers and may compose special units. They are subordinate to the Nobles but considered more "sacred". Zzaburi are fed, housed, and appropriately honored for the labors they perform for their talars. Some serve as wizard-priests for a shrine or temple and are supported by their community. Zzaburi learn their art in a school or from a wandering teacher. They must remain celibate and seek to free themselves of all worldly interference so that they can concentrate on mental and magical exploration. As a result, unlike the other castes, new zzaburi are chosen from the children of the other castes. Our Pithdaran wizard-priest is a tall, lean man with dark skin and a long black beard (something like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b9/Image-TekleHaimanot.jpg). He wears a tall hat (like this http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maciej_Krokow.jpg) but with an ornate bronze plate on the front, displaying the Law Rune with the All-Seeing-Eye within (http://api.ning.com/files/lXs7xf-VLWDRIIk6IdfN8uGHTLsRvnVJr8qTqKzRI8Kb7zLUqYuHQx5UNKXmuQhDy3bki8tbhQX3Uk84t6rHqC5NcrQfXKlr/all_seeing_eye.png). He wears ornate and elaborately decorated long-sleeved robes with a richly embroidered vest (giving the overall impression of something like a cross between the priestly vestments of the priests of the Temple of Jerusalem http://www.templestudy.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/high-priest.jpg and this http://moondesignpublications.com/files/2011/12/Sog-City.jpg). On his chest, he wears a breastplate made of iron (and looking like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kohenbreastplate.jpg) and is inscribed with runes in the following pattern (3 runes across, 4 down): Magic Rune Law Rune Infinite Rune Death Rune Water Rune Life Rune Harmony Rune Earth Rune Disorder Rune Stasis Rune Fire Rune Movement Rune Illusion Rune Darkness Rune Truth Rune The wizard-priest's hands are likely making some sort of strange occult gesture (the sort of stuff we could imagine Dr. Strange doing as illustrated by Steve Ditko). Fig. 2. Loskalmi Man-of-All. Loskalm, in the far north, rejects the rigid caste system that defines most Western societies. Instead, the ruling sect of New Hrestolism has created a radical egalitarian society, where every Loskalmi can identify himself as worker, soldier, wizard, or ruler; many strive to pass through the four caste occupations during their lifetime. They tend to be pale of skin and fair of hair. The Men-of-All are the mystic guardians of Loskalm, a mystical order of warrior-monks (think Buddhist monks like the sōhei, not Christian monks) who vow to serve and defend their community, study magical grimoires, and act as judges and leaders for the common folk. They are governed by strict rules established by Hrestol for his companions. The Men-of-All learn to fight from horseback (and are thus have often been called some variation of "horse-men" by outside commentators) and are provided with weapons and mounts by their community. They are superbly self-disciplined and skilled in the martial arts. Our female Loskalmi Man-of-All has short-cropped dark blonde hair. She is lithe, graceful, and extremely athletic. She wears an unadorned Doric Chiton (made of wool) that does not quite reach her knees, and is tied with her sword belt. Over it she wears a heavy woolen chlamys. Clearly she relies upon her mystical self-discipline to cope with the severe winters of Loskalm! She wears high woolen socks (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7f/Islamic_sock.jpg) and sandal boots like a caligae. She wields a long, elegant sword like a narrower version of the Goujian Sword (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f3/Goujian_sword_and_inscript_detail.svg and http://baike.baidu.com/albums/142504/142504/0/0.html#0$cf5a831645586d61f2de3270) but instead of Chinese characters it has the runes of Harmony, Law, and Death. If she needs another weapon, she has a long, equally elegant spear, or a bow and arrows.
  14. Fonritian Section discussion! Main thread: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6492-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-week-3/ Week 3 errors: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6432-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-week-3-errors/ Here's one of the sketches for the Fonritian illustration by Jeff Laubenstein Here's the original art direction from 2012 (links not checked): Fonritan Overview A cruel slavocracy, slavery defines and dominates Fonritan society. The descendants of Doraddi gone horribly wrong and their rulers perverted by Chaos worship, Fonritans hold that Life is Slavery. They reason that the soul is slave to the body, the powers and elements are slaves to the Runes, people are slaves of their ruler, and the gods are slaves to Time. In short, they acknowledge Slavery as the Order of the Cosmos, and submit to it. Outsiders often claim that this philosophy is merely a justification for the cruelty of the upper classes. The people of Fonrit have blue, black, or white skin, as well as any possible mixture thereof. Most of the ruling class are black Agimori, while the most miserable slaves are predominantly blue-skinned Veldangi. The majority of the population is of mixed blue and black origin, called the Torabs. Free men wear a flowing wide sleeved robe, usually decorated with intricate embroidery or a tunic and wrap-around skirt. They wear jewelry, including beaded collars, gold necklaces, arm rings, and anklets, and high conical hats, often with projections extending from the top. Free women typically wear flowing robes, face veils, and even more jewelry than men. Veils are worn by married women. Slaves are attired as their owner provides or as their occupation requires, most typically just a wrap-around skirt. Wealthy slaves wear jewelry. Temple slaves (who may be richer and more powerful than any masarin) are dressed in accordance with the wishes of their god. Military slaves carry weapons and wear armor. Kaddam, at the other extreme, often wear little more than a breech-cloth. Wool and linen, often vibrantly colored, are the most common textiles, although silk is favored by the rich. Decorations such as embroidery, fringe, exotic feathers, gems, and even gold-dust are used by those who can afford them. Slaves are marked with scarification and tattoos that display ownership and occupation. Scarification is also used for initiatory status. Fonrit is Bronze or Early Iron Age in technology. Spears and swords are the primary weapons. Fonritan slave soldiers use a heavy curved single-edged sword; masarin carry a very broad, leaf-shaped short sword. Shields are large and made of hide. Barbed javelins and crossbows are typical missile weapons. Armor is typically helmets and breastplates made of bronze or thick hide. Fig. 1. Female Masarin Sorcerer: At the top of Fonritan society are the city tyrants, called a jann, who serves only their personal gods. Each tyrant is served by free nobles, called masarin, who own vast numbers of slaves but are not owned by other individuals (but can be owned by gods). Masarin make up no more than 5% of the population. Sorcery is common in Fonrit. Sorcerers seek to understand and manipulate the magical master-slave hierarchies and networks that order the Otherworld. Our female masarin sorcerer is dark-skinned with facial features that look Somali or Eritrean. She wears a golden veil like http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0510/feature2/images/gallery.2.4.jpg. She wears a long, ornately embroidered, wide sleeved robe like http://www.geminitourism.com/Post/PostDosyalar/image/0-Mailing/kaftan.JPG. Her eyes are darkly rimmed with kohl and she wears make up. She is decked out in jewelry: beaded collar, gold neckrings, arm rings, anklets, bracelets, earrings, nose rings, and more. Her nails are extremely long and elaborately lacquered - she is displaying that she never has to do any physical labor. Runes that could be on her include the Chaos Rune, the Fire Rune, the Mastery Rune, the Law Rune, the Moon Rune, and the Illusion Rune. He skin is intricately marked with occult symbols displaying the magical hierarchies she has mastered. Fig. 2. Male Slave Soldier. About 5% of the population is slave soldiers who form an entrenched military caste in Fonritan society. They are better treated than other slaves and typically segregated into their own barracks-communities. They are similar in conception to the Mamluks of Egypt or the Slave Dynasty of Delhi. They are primarily infantry, although some cities maintain war elephants. Our male slave soldier is a torab (of mixed black and blue origin - you can decide what that should look like). He wears an ornate bronze breastplate over a cotton skirt and tall protective helmet. The look should be based on the Benin Bronzes: http://wysinger.homestead.com/benin44.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/thecolchesterkid/4379747215/ http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/course/79-104/Readings/Gallery/Gallery1/HWC494.jpg http://cdn5.wn.com/pd/4a/46/bb7c14b91117899fbdb436e2df06_grande.jpg http://www.galerie-herrmann.com/arts/art3/Ife_Benin/87_Krieger_Leo/Warrior_gr.jpg He carries a heavy, curved, single-edged sword like this: http://i.pbase.com/o6/93/329493/1/126240773.5vxB7fg5.LondonMar10462.jpg (with the Death Rune carved on the blade) and also a heavy hide shield. He might also have a barbed javelin or crossbow. Around his arms he wears protective amulets with the symbols of the Sun and the Moon. He is marked on the face and limbs with ritual scarification, which marks him as a slave soldier of this city-state.
  15. Pelorian Section discussion! Main thread: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6492-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-week-3/ Week 3 errors: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6432-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-week-3-errors/ Here's one of the sketches for the Pelorian illustration by Jeff Laubenstein Here's the original art direction from 2012 (links not checked): Pelorians Overview The Pelorians are a proud and ancient civilization of riverine city-states united by a divine emperor descended from the Moon Goddess. They are Bronze Age or Early Iron Age in culture and comparable to the ancient civilizations of Babylon, Assyria, or Achaemaenid Persia (with some trappings from Hellenistic Greece and the Roman Empire thrown in for good measure). Their society is extremely socially stratified and strongly patriarchal, but the Lunar religion offers opportunities for women to hold positions of power and prestige. The Pelorians are light-skinned (ranging from pale to olive), with brown to blonde hair. Brown and blue eyes are prevalent. Men grow full beards and trim their mustaches. Basic dress consists of a skirt, tunic, jacket, cloak or sleeved robe, and headdress. Clothing is strictly regulated by social class. Commoners have fewer pieces of clothing and the skirt cannot extend below the knee: higher class citizens wear more clothing (and what they have is more ornate) and can wear their skirts and robes longer. Nobles wear long robes and skirts that drag on the floor and must be carried over ground by servants. Headdresses are common for men and women. In some regions, they are embellished with gold and silver coins, Decorative veils and face coverings are common among higher-class women. Some regions paint themselves with henna, painting runes and other magical symbols on their hands and feet. Weapons are Bronze Age, and the Pelorians are renowned for their heavy infantry, disciplined spearmen armored with bronze cuirasses and plumed helmets. Peloria is also feared for its disciplined cavalry, armed with bows, lances and curved swords, and effective against both the Pentan nomads and the barbarian nations of the upland hills. Fig. 1. Dara Happan hoplite. Dara Happa is a rich and broad valley along the Oslir River, densely populated with ancient cities. It has continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The people are average size for humans and they view themselves as the natural rulers of the world. Our male Dara Happan hoplite wears a bronze cuirass with gold decorations (like this http://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/gr/web-large/DP251338.jpg but with gold decorations) and bronze greaves (perhaps decorated with the faces of protective gods or spirits, like http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fa/Bronze_greaves_BM_GR1856.12-26.615.jpg). Underneath his cuirass he wears a red tunic that reaches down between his calves and his knees. Leather pteruges decorated with silver coins hang from his sword belt and protect his groin (http://www.tastenboard.de/uploads/images/cingulum-4). The sword at his left side is curved like a falcata or kopis (http://www.wulflund.com/images_items/greek-falcata-sword_2.jpg) and in an ornate sheathe (http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/1600/g27bc.jpg). In his hand he carries a spear with a bronze spearhead. His shield is bronze and is decorated with a golden eight pointed star (http://www.theishtar.com/resources/600px-Ishtar-star-symbol.svg.png.opt394x394o0,0s394x394.png). He has a long blonde beard and trim mustache, but little can be seen of his face, since he wears a bronze helmet in the Corinthian style (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1330/1134340712_520d4ca0a0.jpg). It is decorated with an impressive crest of horsehair, feathers, and plumes (like this http://www.ancientreplicas.com.au/images/st/st_SmallHighCrest.jpg). His helmet and weapons are inlayed with the runes of Fire, Stasis, and Death. Fig. 2. Orayan Lunar cultist. Oraya is an eastern province of the Lunar Empire bordering the endless grasslands of Pent. It was settled from the interior of the Lunar Empire a little over a century ago and is home to many diverse religions, mystery cults, and barbarous sects. It has hot summers and colder winters than Dara Happa. The Orayans tend to have brown or black hair, but blonde and even red is not unknown. Our Orayan Lunar cultist wears ornate loose robes of black and red like http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c7/Bersheba_dress.jpg/303px-Bersheba_dress.jpg and http://www.zawaj.com/weddingways/images/egypt/egyptian_bedouin_woman.jpg. The robes are decorated with jewelry and beads, and marked with the Moon Rune, and with various Lunar Runes from the following site: http://www.etyries.com/moonie/moonrune.htm. Her hands are painted in henna with those runes as well. She carries a curved sickle-knife in her belt (http://southernsudan.prm.ox.ac.uk/images/midsize/1917.25.27_a.jpg). She wears an ornate veil decorated with silver coins (such as http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c7/Bersheba_dress.jpg/303px-Bersheba_dress.jpg and http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F0PbGLJkpIw/Tjex65SZShI/AAAAAAAAHhc/_ViWhmo1Xvg/s1600/shopping%252520page%252520-%252520bedouin%252520woman.gif). The veil permits sight of her eyes, which are darkly painted with kohl.

This weeks page range is page 59 up to and including page 80. Please include the text to be corrected and the correction. @Rick Meints has clarified versions of the Guide, please check your errors against the latest PDF:
  18. I have to agree with @EricW here. Lovecraft's stories are the best source and style guide to the Mythos and how the horror works. Even though you can get the stories copyright free, I have three omnibuses of the stories that I found the most useful, you can often find them in second book stores (here in the UK) or nay them very cheap on amazon: I lent them out many time to players who would read a few stories or devour the lot.
