  5. Index - https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6558-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-index/ Before we start, a few points: I've contacted by a number of people about the discussions going way off track and are veering into "Here's some crazy speculation I've wanted to get off my chest for a while tenuously related to the section we've read". I've created the Deep discussion thread to hopefully shift this into a new place and not scare off newcomers: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6548-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-week-6-deep-discussion/ Please keep your discussions to the current section - it's easy to wander off. Please keep your discussions on the current section in this thread. Please only add to this if you've read the section. I'm trying to avoid derailments by non-participants. If you are having difficulty finding the threads - they are all tagged: guide to glorantha group read, click the tag and the treads will all appear: https://basicroleplaying.org/tags/guide to glorantha group read/ Please don't forget to start reading the next section for week 7. From page 125 up to and including page 149. You've got until Monday 7th August. Any errors in the next section, please put in the week 7 errors: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6552-guide-to-glorantha-group-read-week-7-errors/ This week we move on to the Last part of the Elder races - The Lesser Elder Races, Then to the Time in Glorantha and the start of the Mythos and History section. 6. This is a place where you can post any errors you spot in the Week 6 Guide to Glorantha Group Read. Please note that there will be a different thread each week to post errors. This weeks page range is page 106 up to and including page 124. Please include the text to be corrected and the correction. @Rick Meints has clarified versions of the Guide, please check your errors against the latest PDF:
  7. @jrutila that certainly another way of doing it, but remember that it's also about how much the players as a whole have invested in a situation. The more they invest in an outcome the more it will move away from a random encounter to a certainty. If they've spent time preparing for a possible enemy encounter, then when they finally say we're all set. You then frame the contest. What are you doing, what do you want the outcome to be. It moves storywise from are there enemies nearby to when we detect them this what we want the outcome to be.
  8. Multiple uses of an ability is covered in extended contests.
  9. Could someone make this a page on the Glorantha Wiki{a}. A list of Heroquests with references would be really useful. Perhaps, Name, reference (system), protagonists, antagonists?
  10. Whilst I can't speak for this particular Kickstarter, most kickstarters allow those who missed the boat to pre-order through Backerkit (or similar) when that time comes around. The Gloranthan Sourcebook is not listed as only available to backers, so IMHO it's likely to be available likely for the $15 PDF and $30 PDF plus P&P, but what do I know.
  11. One of the core ideas that we've been working with over the years is that coming up with Heroquests is easier than you think. Okay, its nice to have a big one as the climax of an adventure - the one in the Colymar campaign, etc. But there's loads of stuff already published that are the seeds of Heroquests, that are easily fleshed out. This is good otherwise each cult needs a list of quests and few will overlap with other cults. Whilst working on the cult of Waha that appeared in Heroquest Glorantha, I came up against the same problem - to much stuff to write about. So I looked at all the mythic actions of Waha and just put them in a long list - it's not even complete: Next a simple format so you can fill them out: and an example to get you going Now you just have to do it with the cults you are using.
  12. Over on G+, Hyperlexic asked: http://glorantha.wikia.com/wiki/Reaching_Moon_Temples @David Weihe replied I've brought this over here as it's an interesting topic that merits further discussion. Also that we have the Senior Scholar of the Wiki[a] @metcalph on here. It would be great to end up with a list of temples and their establishment dates or the range of possible establishment dates (and an updated Wiki:-) There's a handy map in the Guide on page 297 to help and inspire.
  13. Two different products: https://www.chaosium.com/heroquest-pdf/ Multi genre https://www.chaosium.com/heroquest-glorantha-pdf/ Glorantha Genre pack. Added magic and culture, slight rules changes.
  14. This is one of the reference pictures used for the elf plate @Jan Pospisil did.
  15. There's a lot of referencing parts of the Guide that we haven't reached yet. Please start a new thread to accommodate this. We are reading the cultural section at the moment.
  16. HeroQuest doesn't actually limit repeat actions, except augments. In my games players often repeatedly cast magic, they normally stop as they've won or been knocked out of the contest or circumstances change. You've either played in some oddly GMd games, not played HeroQuest or not understood the rules (or maybe not read them?). As HeroQuest is very player driven and the answer to any contest is yes, but... I've never seen the authoritarianism you speak of. For a better understanding of the system, I'd suggest Robin Laws' other books - Hamlet's Hit Points, Hillfolk and of course Sharper Adventures in HeroQuest Glorantha.
  17. It's important to note that population density isn't the same as we are likely used to here. Travelling across country by known "roads" will likely have the occasional traveller or merchant. It's a trade / info opportunity. If they skirt / village and towns its not really going to be a problem. What will draw attention to them is when they arrive looking like strangers in a backwater. Every is going to be interested - it's something new (If you've watched the BBCs adaption of Cranford you'll know what I mean). Most of these places aren't militarised and central authority is likely distant. Money, gifts and being polite are likely to get you a long way. So it's a question of how far do you let them get before word gets to someone that strangers are crossing the land. Eventually someone will take notice and maybe investigate. or as @metcalph says, fall afoul of some local rule. Unless they cause trouble they could in theory make it across. But where's the fun in that. Have a look at Pavis; GtA. The main adventure is about how useful orlanthi can be to the Lunars - for ritual purposes. Replace the salt mines with dorastor and you are sorted.
  18. As @Jeff is just teasing, here's how far back dinosaurs go into Glorantha... Greg has always had a soft spot for dinosaurs, here's a preproduction piece from the original White Bear / Red Moon (complete with tipex): Some of you may also be aware that not only is Greg First Pope of the Church of Elvis, but also the founder of Sauriantology.

  24. The framework that we used in HeroQuest Glorantha has been pretty much outlined by @Ian Cooper. It's worth noting that the runes that a character has are the dominant three (RQ Glorantha uses a very similar system). Most beings in Glorantha are made up in part of all the runes (philosophers would argue that includes a tiny amount of chaos). So Ducks and Minotaurs have the Beast rune, but it doesn't need to be dominant, likewise all humans have the man rune. It's often been asked if it's possible to have 4th dominant rune, the answer is yes, but as Ian said: So it's not a good deal to do so. There are a few exceptions to this of course - the infinity rune designating Enlightenment and the Phases of the Moon allowing access to the whole Moon rune or other rune effects - after Sevening. It should also be noted that when you see the runes by an NPC in a HeroQuest product, these are just guides as to what they might be capable of and with the moon rune we never show phases. As for Animist traditions, you can always hang spirit magic off the spirit rune, but trolls can also do it off the Darkness rune, Elves off the plant rune, storm bull cultists off the Beast rune or Eternal battle rune, Hsunchen off their beast or beast sub-rune, Kolati off their Air rune, Larnstings off their change rune, etc.
  25. This is actually the nature of reading groups in my experience. Many years ago I ran as part of my job a reading group in a local library. At end of the previous weeks session, the next person in turn would pick out a book for us to read. When we got back together, we'd have the usual things talked about, the story, favourite bits, what so and so's motivations were. But more often than not, some one would point out something they didn't understand or wanted to know more about, or want to tell their experience of it. Then we'd spend half the session talking about it, getting out other books on the subject. Derailments ranged from different countries, animals, space, motivations of people, etc. So what's happening here is what my experience of group reads is. I should point out that my readers were aged between 7 and 9...
