Personally, I favour a vaguer definition of this - Mostly don't appear to have or use any kind of engine. I'd also go so far as to speculate that living things might be their engines, as they are part of the world machine.

Trolls. When the RQ3 Troll and Troll Gods boxes came out I ran a game when where every one was a Rune level from clans in the Redstone Caverns. We had a Zong hunter, a Kyger Litor Shaman Priestess, a Zorak Zoran Warrior, a Gorakki Shaman Priestess and a Artaki Subere priestess. I think everyone had at least one assistant of some form. This all started from wanting to play Snakepipe Hollow, it was the only reasonable way to be powerful enough to take it one. Everyone was familiar with Trollpak so it was pretty easy and a good time was had by all. The alienness of troll was easy to do in a homogeneous group. One of the main themes was of who was in charge. Clearly the Kiger Litor priestess, but she didn't really want to be bothered with the responsibility, so it was all about gaining favour. Even for Rune level troll SPH was a challenge. I certain recommend trying it.

I think it would be pretty easy to strip out all of the Gloranthan material. However, the mastery rune would need replacing as it's in a specialist font. Any suggestions for an ascii symbol that would work? How about #, any suggestions @Ian Cooper: space ranger 5#

An interesting commentary on the Copper Tablets, however your post would be more accessible an overview and individual tablets. Otherwise it's too dense to easily discuss individual sections.

As @MOB said, they'd just find very small runes, no need to bring particle physics into it. They don't actually have to. They just imagine that they are infinitely small. Using Democritus's atomic theory from 465BC, and replacing the word atom with runes, would seem to work perfectly for the notion of Western understanding of the Runes: All matter consists of invisible particles called runes. runes are indestructible. runes are solid but invisible. runes are homogenous. runes differ in size, shape, mass, position, and arrangement. I'd also add in for Glorantha that the chaos rune may alter the above. It would seem to me that the more you focus down on a pure rune the more you enter the otherworld. Not quite as it appears to be a set of techniques in which the "seeing: appears to be but one part. GtG page 135: It's likely the technique mimics the basics of sorcery, but applied in the Otherworld: Summon/Dismiss, Command, Combine/Separate, Tap.
