  1. If I recall some of the material correctly, you might not bring back physical things from the quest; instead the point is what you experience. learn, and internalize. which often leads to magic. So what do you learn from seeing a troll goddess or demigodess crying. up close and personal? From touching the tears? Maybe you learn compassion, maybe an increase in your Harmony rune, maybe a unique magic that resembles some of the Issaries or Chalana Arroy rune spells. But if you do bring back tears it is the essence of sadness or of pity. Or maybe % in troll lore or insight(Uz).
  2. The whole "only a game" paradigm ignores realities of RW American and British football. Here in Texas. USA, for many people football is not to be laughed at or made fun of. As a practical matter it is on a par with religion, especially as some people's RW application of religion(s) can get peculiar, while others wish they would come off it. I did actual opinion research in entertainment that unintentionally touched on the football subject, about 28 years ago. And made significant discoveries that led to changes in the product. And we have all heard of soccer / football hooligans. Because trolls are the Elder Race closest to humans, it should be no surprise that the original authors made them reflect those rabid fan attitudes.
  3. I feel OK necroinhg the thead. Last month Chaosium announced a relationship with RPG Match. It does have a link from the blog section of the Chaosium web site. Now the bad news: That sole link is getting gradually buried. and the number of RuneQuest players who have registered with RPG Match appears to be low. It could stand some more love from Chaosium.
  4. Some of the discussion above implies a search for the ultimate grimoire which would contain all possible sorcery spells. But logic indicates that there is no such thing; The Blue Book would contain the principles from which sorcery is derived. But principles are not a magazine of spells ready to cast. They are a starting point. Since we know that sorcerors create new spells after long study, it seems likely that a near infinite number of spells are possible. Those could only be contained in a near infinite size book, not one you could walk out of a library with. On another facet of the discussion: Wouldn't some of the books in a large Gloranthan library be clay tablets? Which are bulkier than papyrus or vellum.
  5. Optimator son 0f Spaten, i like it. Ideally an initiate of Minlister, and dual initiate of some other god with more punch.
  6. I really like Spaten beer, and it has never tasted like blood. Just in case anyone wonders.
  7. According to the Earth cults book Gloranthans do use earthblood tar for caulking and waterproofing. Also for mortar. So- You can use it for shops. boats, baskets. and for building projects.
  8. Thinking about that Tarpit tar as Earthblood: It is a useful commodity. Would it be traded, with a secondary benefit to the Uz in that removing it may gradually deplete the Tarpit and reopen the way to the Underworld? Or would trade be refused. as the tar is held to be remains of the Only Old One, a demigod, and therefore sacred?
  9. So the equivalent of a buckle, only for a sash? It is conceivable. But my own experience of tying a sash is that it does not need a buckle. You would only need such a thing if you were incompetent at tying the sash. Right hip ... always the right hip? Perhaps part of a closure system for an upper garment? Using ties instead of a hook?
  10. One thing that is vague:: The Guide says the Caladraland High Kings are elected by the clan chiefs for a single term. Does anyone have an opinion about how long that term is? Also any opinion as to whether there is a permanent royal establishment in Lowvale at Low Temple? A palace, an archive. royal officials? Do the clans pay taxes to the High King? If not then why would most of the chiefs who are not from there, want the job? It's my observation that in the RW, term limits empower the bureaucracy.
  11. As I recall pigs are associated with Ernalda. So a boar's tusk would be a cult oriented ornament. I don't recall a reference for the tie in to fertility. With the loops at each end I could see a thong attached to be worn around the neck.
  12. That bronze belt is unlike anything ancient that I have seen before. And it shows wire work holding the pendants, which I doubt would be done by casting alone, so there was lots of hammer work there and possibly wire drawing. Also the uniformity of the pieces indicates to me that division of labor in the workshop possibly occurred. Does it look that way to you? To me, the beauty is in the concept, not the individual pieces of the belt.
  13. Now will Plant Lore still extend to fungi? Or do certain alchemists and more Uz have a Fungus Lore skill? Thi is relevant to the conduct of trade in those goods.
  14. What would the Shadow Plateau import? What would the Shadow Plateau export? It is not a major region, so this is not defined in the Guide to Glorantha. The Shadow Plateau was devastated by the destruction of the Palace of Black Glass, but that was hundreds of years ago on the current timeline. There is a sizeable population of Uz there, 41,000 (though this makes the plateau one of the least populated troll realms) and they should trade (a) with the Kitori / Troll woods, (b) with Orlanthi humans (some of this being mediated by the Kitori), and (c)with the other troll realms. I can imagine these flows of goods: Human to Uz: Livestock, ingots of bronze (the Uz have Zorak Zoran smiths), worked bronze (weapons, tools, scales for armor), other materials not found on the Plateau like ivory, rarer non-igneous rock minerals, some scents and perfumes, spices. Other Uz realms to Shadow Platau: The Shadow Plateau will import spider silk from Cragspider's realm, and giant bee products from Dagori Inkarth where the Vale of Flowers is. These places would seem to have distinct advantages in production, not to deny that some Gorakiki - Bee and Aranea initiates may live on the Shadow Plateau. Troll Woods to and from Shadow Plateau: I imagine the Kitori as either self sufficient hunter-gatherers, farmers, herders. or middlemen conducting trade southward with Heortland and Esrolia. They will produce things - but with a population of only 5,000 their economic capacity is limited. They would have an advantage in production of insect products, and another advantage in pottery and redsmithing for Uz customers, because the human Kitori won't have the instinctive aversion to fire that Uz do. even Zorak Zoran Uz. Most of the Shadow Plateau's Uz population is "subterranean" according to the Guide. But the Plateau is vegetated, so I imagine these Uz as mostly hunter-gatherers, living fairly well from a large area. Twp places are listed as urban in the Guide. I can imagine the Uz of the Plateau producing and exporting a variety of insects and insect products; and fungi, some with medicinal or hallucinatory value; and of course lead, what else would you get from the lead hills?. Troll drinks too, of course. And since Belintar's death, they have been raiding. What other economic aspects of the Shadow Plateau can you imagine?
  15. A video about experimental archaeology of Bronze Age Mesopotamian textile production. deduced from cloth impressions on clay seals. I had no idea that a larger spindle weight produces thicker thread.yarn. Info about when shearing time is - you want to shear the sheep before the new fleece grows into the old fleece - this implies a seasonality to the work in Ernalda temples' loom houses. Also think of larger textiles than the "2 meter" (by 1m) pieces of cloth given as a standard in W&E. These large pieces in the RW as discussed in the video may have been a regional specialty. The discussion of speed of production of these large textiles has implications for cost. Also, of course, a lot about letters sent, their clay envelopes,
  16. Yes. I got out of the habit of following three Discord when I took a month long vacation. Will pay more attention to it now.
  17. Knowing it is a boys' game, I would expect the female adventurer to ask to be included. And say yes. Probably the same for Vingans before the character is well established. With newish players I would explain all that briefly, not requiring a customs roll, because since it is the Sartarite national game everyone must know something about cattle theft.
  18. Congratulations on the second Pavis book making color hard copy! It looks beautiful in the images above. and I hungrily await its arrival in my mail.
  19. Everybody - is that like the "Orlanthi all"? Seriously, I have seen troll player characters, but never an elf. That may have something to do with Trollpack being published for decades, while Elfpack is still in the future. This seasonal question is not the biggest issue with running an elf in Glorantha, either.
  20. Oh, no, I did not get that meaning. I believe augmentation is for character actions, not the learning mechanics. Though I might be persuaded that a Lhankor Mhy passion would influence a research roll, I don' t identify any of the Runes with that.
  21. I hope everyone allows experience checks on using the rune affinities. If you don't, then how can anyone increase their affinity to qualify for priest, or even to cast rune spells with a higher chance of success? See RQiG page 227. "Runic Inspiration". Also "Becoming Inspired: on pages 229-231.
  22. Assuming this is in the Middle World and not the spirit plane: Then here are my thoughts: I doubt that spirit combat requires visibility in cases where the disembodied spirit is attacking someone who is corporate. It was the spirit's choice to close, now the spirit is ripping at your soul. You are in spirit combat and can resist, you don't need to see either. Spirits can evidently perceive your soul directly, they don't have or need eyes unless their description says otherwise. Where I would say total darkness makes a difference is the spirit would not be seen as it manifests in SR12 of the arrival round. So most Adventurers should be oblivious to it until it strikes in the second round of the encounter. They will carry on with their statements of intent until they find themselves in spirit combat. Unless they have magic up that will let them see the spirit. So if person A is attacked their friends B and C have no clue they should be involved and won't be casting Disruption or Distraction until after A screams. The GM can make this a real horror show. In principle it is no worse than fighting trolls in the dark. Does anyone have an Ignite spell? This all assumes that the spirit does not give off light when it manifests. Fire elementals are an obvious exception, but they also burn you instead of using spirit combat. If the GM rules that some particular spirit glows then that is another merciful exception. Do your ghosts glow in the dark? YGMV.
  23. As I understand it. when the spirit manifests in the Midfke World it is visible to everyone. not just its intended victim. When the spirit actually does attack, it will englobe the victim, so as I interpret that, third parties attacking that spirit with a magic weapon (such as a sword with Bladesharp on it) are striking into melee with all the risks that iindicates. Because of this. the victim's friends will likely choose to attack the sprit magically, for instance with the Disruption spell.
  24. I don't think of the adulthood initiation as something you pass or fail. It gives you choices and your choice probably points you to the cult you will apply to be initiated in. Yes there is the risk of death, but it is low. less than the risk in simply growing up from babyhood.
  25. The pre 1625 stuff is still playable but may not mix logically with newer adventures that assume the Lunar occupation of Sartar is over. However note that campaigns like Six Seasons in Sartar, available on Jonstown Compenduoum, span both pre and post 1625 periods. It is really not a big obstacle for a GM. Also. it is NOT forbidden to write new pre 1625 material. Go ahead and play!
