Hello everyone,

Another new virtual face! The name's Nyar (yes!) and I live in Vienna (AT), where I have a lair that I share with books and felines.

Having grown up in the rural countryside of Austria in the 80s and 90s, getting to play pen&paper with people was difficult. I had a few friends whom I was able to pressure into the hobby, and we met up regularly across hundreds of km to play. I started out GMing D&D (because fantasy agreed with everyone), and soon my players found themselves doing planar adventures (Planescape, favourite D&D setting). Occasionally I would run a short Call of Cthulhu game if I found myself alone with a willing victim, or even V:tM or Paranoia. Basically, whatever rulebooks I could find back in those days.

Then life happened, proper adulting started, and my AuDHD ass was busy trying to make it through that - and the gaming kinda drifted out of my life. Never forgotten, just on that mental backburner.

Cut to a new endeavour (getting a PhD in ancient squiggles), and I found myself thinking that I want to play again. That thought became a need, and I started scouring offline and online for a group that I would feel at home with. Played D&D and Delta Green for a while, and then found my rpg home just recently in a Call of Cthulhu group.

I'm currently running (and writing) a CoC campaign set in Iraq, with lots of Mesopotamian stuff going on. As a person specialising in this kind of thing I wanted to write something where evil does not come from the ancient and faraway exotic east, but where the usual polarities we find in most games set in some version of the real world are subverted. It's also my attempt at creating a form of educational gaming in which the players are shown how awesome Mesopotamia was.

Welcome to the madness Nyar72!

There is a high-quality, in-depth, Mesopotamia fan-product out there titled "Uruk". It's made for BRP and not specifically Call of Cthulhu, but it might be useful. Having said that, its written in French, though some BRP Central users have apparently had success using Google Translate to translate it to English (or perhaps German?). @Zit might be able to direct you to the latest version.

There is no new version but I made a small "setting package" for Revolution d100, in English, with much less info and background but which may be an usefull tool (und ich habe leider nicht vor, eine Deutsche Version davon zu machen): Sumer Package, in the download section.

Welcome on board, Nyar.

Nice idea about Mesopotamia. I'm sure you will find here people interested  to discuss of your ideas and games.

Hopefully, I would LOVE to talk about gaming and Mesopotamia with someone 🙂

I already read the English Sumer package, and started working my way (slowly!) through the French book. It's clearly a labour of love, and as someone whose academic focus is early Mesopotamia I really appreciate that the early periods were chosen as basis for this.

Thanks a lot. Since Mesopotamia is definitely not an academic focus for me, but instead an interest for very ancient history, you'll probably find unaccuracies and mistakes in it. But it is a 20 year-old work which goal was to raise the interest for a period which facinates me. And rule-wise, I'd probably find other solutions today.

Hello everyone. I'm new here. I couldn't find a FAQ or guidelines on posting. What are the guidelines and restrictions on posting? Is it just one post a day? TIA. Dave

Your first 2-5 posts are restricted by the spam filter and need manual approval, after that there's no restrictions. I also have a look at what you wrote in your bio and login details, as that's a major indicator of your intent!

Do you ever get to the Herefordshire board game meeting? We usually sponsor their annual event. FYI I'm in the UK too.

Thanks for your reply. I'm 30 minutes from Hereford, but never made one of their meetings, though I'm subscribed to their Facebook group. I play in person sometimes in Newent and face-to-face with a couple of friends. But most of my board and role-playing activities are solo.
