However, the compelling piece of evidence overlooked by Beekes, is that calling the 3 headed hound of hell, “Spot”, is funny enough that it *has* to be true.  Therefore, I reject Beekes conclusions.

(Good piece of research though.  Wikipedia, way deeper research than I’m willing to go, except in extremis.  Strong opinions are much easier to hold on subjects on which one knows nothing)

If you want something serious, Liddell and Scott (1882) defined it as 'darkling', so going that bit further.  I cannot get away from 'Spot' though, I agree that it is just sooooo sweet.  Whodacutesomehellhound, den?
