Oracle Charts For RuneQuest/Glorantha

Hey all.

I'm about to run RuneQuest for the first time as a Duet game with my husband so getting resources, and running it as a sandbox campaign which is actually a first for me in all the decades I've run RPGs.

So I'm seeing if anyone has put together any Glorantha focused oracle tables similar to how Mythic, Ironsworn, or the other solo rpgs have for quick inspiration or ideas.  Was planning on using Mythic and Ironsworn's table but was hoping for something more Glorantha focused as well.

Anyone know of any?

Hello, @huntsfromshadow -- welcome to the Tribe!

I don't recall the precise thing you are looking for, but I note the old RQ tradition of "rumor tables" that one might repurpose.

Roll to see how the veracity seems -- sufficient to pursue an opportunity, flee if it seems threatening, etc. -- and (if a rumor is engaged-with) roll again (maybe with modifiers, depending on how much research was done, quality (and bias) of the sources consulted, etc) once the character(s) are inextricably-engaged, to see the truth of the rumor ...

Just a quick question, have you tried  the free solo scenario "The Battle of Dangerford"? It seems to be impossible to find on the chaosium.com site so I have included a link below... Folk say it is a great way to learn RQ. And it is free!

I'm not familiar with the systems you mention or what they mean by oracle table, but it'd be great to develop a table of semi-vague oracular visions that characters could get from consulting specialists in a temple or from hazia-induced dreams, etc. Throw together a bunch of things that include references to the broader setting ("I see a bison whose coat is as polished alabaster tossing its head, seeking to gore the Red Moon!") with visions that are essentially adventure seeds ("Within the cave of many hues waits [*insert tantalizing nugget here*])." Of course, how do you get the character to consult the oracle?

Beoferret, I believe you are shooting into the dark here. I have done a little digging because I had no idea what she was referring to, and this is what I have found. Now I could be mistaken but it seems that what huntsfromshadow (let me know if I get this right, hfs) is referring to is a soloquest system called Oracle and it has been ported to several systems... except  RQ. It has a series of tables that aid in creating random encounters and quests on the fly... the quote below describes tables for DnD. Now, in a way g33k is close in his rumour table idea, and two sources have tables for events (the old Glorantha Box set for RQ3, but this is no good for a newcomer (out of print, very expensive and not very deep), and the megalithic two tomes of the Guide to Glorantha... great books but not very practical for what hfs is asking for although their are brief events tables in them.

Sorry for being a little pedantic with this explanation, hfs but if I did not, you would have had everyone jumping in blindly to offer assistance as I am guessing many here (myself included) have/had no idea what Oracle is... You may wish to chime in and give a thumbnail describing what it is and what it does (and correct any errors I have made for that matter).

  • Quote

5e with an Oracle and 100+ pages of tables for creating quests, picking monsters, or the troll’s toenail color (well, no table for that, probably)

OP also mentions "Mythic" by which I suspected was meant "Mythic GM Emulator"

It's not a tool I have used, but I suspect it would be no more than "adequate" for RQ:  the lore is so deep -- and strange! -- that I fear a generic tool will basically miss most of the richness.

For possible future reference, "Runequest RPG" on the top banner, then "playing Runequest" and it's the second main section, link included.

Not easy or intuitive, but there indeed. Thanks Jason!

No exposure to "solo RPGs", per se... Solo /adventures/ for an RPG, OTOH...

RQ2/Classic has random encounter tables. DriveThru does offer https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/357562/Close-Encounters-of-the-Sartar-Kind

The only other thing I know of similar was the Traveller Patron tables. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/80148/Classic-TravellerCTS0676-Patrons and https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/57221/Supplement-1-760-Patrons (obviously not usable with RQ).

Have a look at https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/409460/Somewhere-in-Glorantha?affiliate_id=1107865, which gives random location tables for all of Glorantha. The author, Mark Prier, put it together as part of a wider project to develop a set of charts etc for solo RQ play. It may therefore be worth getting in touch with him to see how far he has progressed with that.

An Unofficial Buyer's Guide to RuneQuest and Glorantha lists everything currently available for the game and setting, across 60 pages. "Lavishly illustrated throughout, festooned with hyperlinks" - Nick Brooke. The Voralans presents Glorantha's magical mushroom humanoids, the black elves. "A wonderful blend of researched detail and Glorantha crazy" - Austin Conrad. The Children of Hykim documents Glorantha's shape-changing totemic animal people, the Hsunchen. "Stunning depictions of shamanistic totem-animal people, really evocative" - Philip H.

Mythic should be no problem. The Ironsworn Oracle needs tweaking:

  • 7 & 8 should just use the Glorantha map you are using - like the starter set Norther Sartar one.
  • 10 add Shaman to 00
  • 13 You could just use these or choose from the Core Rules, likewise 14 &15.

You will likely need to skin some of the assets, but I don't think that is really an issue.

I've had great fun with Ironsworn Starforged and traveller, I looked at Glorantha, but never got very far as I have a group

For those not familiar with Ironsworn, it's free, the the books are worth it too: https://www.ironswornrpg.com

Hey Thanks all. Sorry it took me so long to reply, as a new account I can only do 1 post every 24 hrs.

So yes when I mean Oracles I mean them in the sense of the Mythic GM Emulator or the Ironsworn system.

These are like encounter tables but or more like phrases, themes or actions.  So A good example from Ironsworn the Action oracle table 100 different words and some of the following entries: Take, Preserve, Create, Leave, Attack. Then the Theme Oracle has 100 words itself that are like: Tool, Faction, Honor, Desolation.

The core idea is to use a mixture of these tables to get inspiration if you get stuck or need random chance to figure out the next step. (Important if you are doing a solo RPG like Ironsworn and Mythic are designed to do).

In my case as I'm running a Duet game for my Husband I was going to try to pull some together for inspiration if I get stuck. Wasn't planning on using the Mythic or Ironsworn systems, going to run the game in RQG, but inspiration help is useful sometimes.

Thanks for all the links I'll go digging around DTRPG then.

Again I recommend the solo online game who's main purpose is to teach the RQ rules. It will save you the need for inspiration for your 1st game and will help you over any rough spots. For your convenience I repeat the URL below. All you will need are dice, but the free rules of the quick start may come in handy (see below).

I will also commend you to pick up (if you haven't already) either the GM Screen Pack, or the Starter Set (or both, of course!)

GMSP has a mini-sandbox setting of the city of Clearwine & surrounding villages/wilderness/etc, and a suite of adventures to begin with.

SS has a mini-sandbox setting of the city of Jonstown & surrounding villages/wilderness/etc, and a suite of adventures to begin with.
