  1. Eighteenth century New World. Mostly realistic with a bit of swash and buckle.
  2. Are there any fencing BRP-style rules anywhere? Apparently fencing is a little like chess where moves are planned in advance, so I'm looking for something different from the attack/parry until someone hits, and allows strikes to be planned - but also quick ripostes to exploit failed attacks. I don't have Stormbringer but I've read reports of being able to do somethign similar. And how exactly are 2 melee weapon fighting handled? My examples are Daniel Day Lewis in 'Last of the Mohicans' and Mel Gibson in 'The Patriot' - knife and hatchet - where one weapon is used to block/parry/entangle leaving a strike open for the other weapon.
  3. Could someone point in the direction of some BRP-style black powder rules for firearms? I have access to the stuff in CoC's Fatal Experiments supplement, but its not working for me.
  4. Are there any BRP-style mechanics for encouraging/rewarding group cohesion? I'm thinking something along the line of Mongoose Traveller's "you're all part of a ship's crew, take a skill level from this pot of suitable skills" or something similar. I'd like to encourage some party cohesion with this and promote inter-character ties with shared points of background or interest. Something like all members are from the same regiment, or gentlemen's club, or internet special interest forum to benefit from the rule.
  5. I'm trying to reimagine the basic CoC skill list in C18 terms. For instance Fast Talk becomes Bambozzle; Read becomes Cipher. Biology and Geology folded in Natural History; Astronomy, Chemistry and Physics folded in Natural Philosophy. But that's as far as I've got. Can I call on the knowledge of BRP Central to supply more? Or at least point me in the direction of a freely available C18 thesaurus?
  6. Thanks to Thrallking for his kind work.
  7. We have a fabulous book on magic for Call of Cthulhu written and about to go into final editing. We do not need you to typo spot or copy edit the text however. We have people to do that. Your job is to test whether the book works or not. It needs the attention of many eyes to weed out the errors and inaccuracies. It might also benefit from critical review to let us know if we have missed anything super-obvious. And if you are really super keen, we'd like you to try out the new rules by yourself and/or with friends and see if they work well enough. However we need your results fast, because we've been sitting on our arses deciding whether to do this or not. We will need your results back by Sunday 20 September 2009. You will get a credit in the book for you and your group, and a PDF copy of the book. To apply please send an e-mail to sixtystone.press@googlemail.com with Reading in the subject by Sunday 23 August 2009. You will be asked to print, sign, scan and return by e-mail a Non Disclosure Agreement before participation. If you do not have access to a scanner to do this, do not apply. The e-mail address above with the subject requirement is the only way available to apply for critical reading of this supplement. Please re-read the requirements above of your participation and your application and make sure you can fulfil them before making your application. Many thanks.
  8. We have a bunch of great scenarios for the ghoul book. But they need playtesting to shake out the obvious mistakes. However we need your results fast, because we've been sitting on our arses deciding whether to do this or not. We will need your results back by Sunday 20 September 2009. You will get a credit in the book for you and your group, and a PDF copy of the book. The scenarios available are as follows: * Dark Ages set in Baghdad with pre-gens / length 4-5 hours * Roman period (no pre-gens) / length 4-5 hours * 1920s (no pre-gens) / length 4-5 hours * modern (no pre-gens) / length up to 8 hours To apply please send an e-mail to sixtystone.press@googlemail.com with Playtest in the subject by Sunday 23 August 2009. Please state which scenarios you wish to playtest in your e-mail. You will be asked to print, sign, scan and return by e-mail a Non Disclosure Agreement before participation. If you do not have access to a scanner to do this, do not apply. The e-mail address above with the subject requirement is the only way available to apply for playtesting. Please re-read the requirements above of your participation and your application and make sure you can fulfil them before making your application. Many thanks.
  9. Sounds good, but you ought to know that Sixtystone Press plans to publish a sourcebook, a scenario book and a campaign book for Colonial Lovecraft Country through 2010. The sourcebook is being written by Kevin Ross. Colonial Lovecraft Country's default setting is 1750 but the sourcebook will cover the whole eighteenth century. That said it sounds like you are doing something broader and non-Cthulhu orientated so there should be room for both of us. And hopefully sales of one will feed the other.
  10. Some fonts can be embedded in PDFs, some can't. I'm guessing Chaosium want the former, because if they aren't, the words are displayed in a nasty system default. Both the fonts you quote are default fonts on Windows machines, but may not be on Mac (or Linux) machines, so the PDF would display properly on a Windows machine but may not on anything else. If the font is embedded in the PDF then it doesn't matter what fonts are installed on the reading machine, so it becomes platform independent. Whether the font can be embedded depends on the licence for the font. Lots of those fonts you get on those huge CD-ROM font collections have been nobbled and you can't embed them. The ones you pay good money for from a font website generally can. But check the licence before you buy, just in case. You can also check whether an installed font can be embedded by installing this (Windows only I'm afraid, no idea if such a thing exists for Macs, but I bet it does): Font properties extension HTH.
  11. As Nick and Al. both point out that *is* the way it should be implemented. One roll which tests both skills. That's what I intended when I wrote up the skill and submitted it to Pagan anyway. I based it on Martial Arts which works in the same way.
  12. I can't see why people have got hung up on the whole monograph program, why aren't they publishing it themselves instead? The Chaosium licence is extremely friendly to small time publishers IMVHO, they just want product. Nothing else. If distribution is electronic, it only costs the publishers sales, and I think its only 100 sales and after that Chaosium has to buy from the publisher at cost. So if a small publisher is using DrivethruRPG and/or Lulu to distribute they might make some beer money, which is about what they could expect to earn if Chaoisum published it as a monograph. Chaosium is doing nothing other than badging and distributing the monogrpahs - all the hard work, editing, and layout is being done by the monograph creators already, so they are almost there to publishing. I suspect there might be a niche market for some ceative soul to offer editing and layout services to monograph authors and/or small e-publishers...
  13. Too many, some overlap, some are irrelevant. What's the difference between Slave and Servant and Labourer? Or Tribesman and Warrior? Or Sailor and Pirate? Or Hunter and Explorer? Or Teacher and Scholar? Basically the same to me. Also I think playing a student or teacher might well suck. This is Hyboria, not Miskatonic U. And you are missing Whore/Serving Wench/Doxie. I'm assuming Shaman covers Witch as well? In my proposed BRP Conan which I'll never write I was going to lift the cultural bonuses straight out RQ3 to represent the different nations/races.
  14. Some of these animals we fudged from stats of similar sized animals in the old 'RQ Monsters' book that GW published when they published RQ3 as Basic and Advanced books. I'm guessing that RQ Monsters will serve as the default BRP bestiary (IMVHO) until Chaosium publishes one.
  15. We will be covering Cthulhu Rising with a special scenario by John Ossaway in WOC7. Let me emphasis that there is no such thing as a rigid CoC setting. Some are more "classical" than others. But some of the more popular one-offs have been set in the far-future, or the London of 1667. We don't buy copyright. We buy first publication rights. Copyright remains with the author. All we ask is that you don't tout your submission around the market again for 6-12 months after publication of the issue it appears in. Published authors and artists get a contributor's copy as well as pay. Now, if after that you want to forfeit the money feel free...
  16. ...but apparently this forum requires you have 5 postings before you can reply to a PM. I was going to place a open call for scenarios and articles later on this year, but with those posts and this one I can reach the magic 5 posts and reply to the PM. Apologies to anyone who may have been adversely affected.
  17. Worlds of Cthulhu is always looking for new background articles for Call of Cthulhu. Please see our submissions guidelines here: http://basicroleplaying.com/forum/basic-roleplaying/771-worlds-cthulhu-submissions-guidelines.html I am particularly interested in articles on investigator professions, but anything that will assist players and keepers with their game will be considered.
  18. Worlds of Cthulhu is always on the look-out for decent Call of Cthulhu scenarios. Any period. One shot or designed for campaign use. We're not worried. As long as its good. Please see our submission guidelines here: http://basicroleplaying.com/forum/basic-roleplaying/771-worlds-cthulhu-submissions-guidelines.html
  19. 'Worlds of Cthulhu' magazine is looking for quality articles and submissions dealing with any and all aspects of Call of Cthulhu gaming. We will be publishing materials for Classic 1920’s, Gaslight, Cthulhu Now, Delta Green and d20 Cthulhu. Standard pay rate for articles published is 1.2 cents a word EUR/Dollars. We are open for submissions. Electronic submissions in .RTF format should be made to: submissions@worldsofcthulhu.com Please note that the guidelines are exactly that–guidelines. If you have a great idea for something that falls outside what’s described below, by all means contact us and make a pitch. A great scenario or article a little shorter or longer than described below will certainly be eligible for publication. Scenarios We hope to run at least two or three full-length scenarios in each issue, with at least one of them based on the 1920s. Gaslight, Cthulhu Now, and Delta Green are also desired. Good CoC scenarios for Dark Ages, The Wild West, and almost any other setting are also good bets for publication. Preferred length is 10,000-15,000 words, but others will be considered. Historical/General Interest Source Articles This can cover all sorts of interesting topics, from articles on archaeology, to information about American gangsters, to a treatise on monastic orders useful to Dark Ages Cthulhu. Articles could be 3000-5000 words, but subject matter will often dictate differently. As always, make a pitch and see what happens. News Submissions Send news about CoC, persons involved with CoC, convention news, or anything else worthy of mention to CoC players to news@worldsofcthulhu.com. There is no payment for news submissions. Reviews We have no plans to publish reviews. As we will only be publishing twice a year, we cannot publish reviews in a timely manner. We will, however, publish reviews on the magazine website. There will be no payment for these reviews. Fiction Do not submit fiction to 'Worlds of Cthulhu'. We will not be publishing fiction of any sort in the magazine. However, we may publish works of ficiton on the website, again with no payment. Feature Departments Feature departments will be published regularly, though not necessarily every issue. Quality submissions will govern the frequency of their appearance in the magazine. New Monsters We want to see more than a simple “Monster Manual” type description and a set of stats. These entries must be more expansive and detailed. Approaches may vary, but we want something that convinces us a new monster or god should be added to the Mythos. Cults EXPOSED!!! Cults may be original concepts or details on a cult from the body of Cthulhu Mythos fiction. As with new monsters, we desire more than a quick sketch, an odd name, and some stats. Cults are made up of human beings who, with the possible exception of the totally insane followers of Cthulhu, have human desires, goals, etc. Professions Expanded These pieces should be 2000-3000 words long and describe a Call of Cthulhu “Profession” that will aid players in the creation and roleplaying of these individuals. We already have plans to publish the “Flapper” and the “Archaeologist”. These can be professions described in the rule book, or a profession of your own design. The descriptions should center on the 1920s but when applicable the description should cover a history of the profession that gives some information about both the Gaslight and Cthulhu Now eras. New Magicks We are open to submissions for short pieces describing new spells or magic items. Call of Cthulhu does not hinge itself on such things, so any new magicks finding print will, like new monsters, have to convince the editors that it is worth adding to the Cthulhu Mythos universe. Scenario Seeds/Tales of Terror 500-1000 words, these are short descriptions of possible scenarios with good hooks that leave the Keeper to fill in the details. Lovecraft Country Corner Got anything to add to the existing body of work covering Arkham, Kingsport, Dunwich, Innsmouth and environs? Creepy Locations Creepy locations can include old houses, cemeteries, or even ghost towns–use your imagination. The source may be historical, fictional, or something of your own device. Regions and Cities Historical, actual locations that would be of interest and helpful to Keepers. How-To Column Short entries primarily for 1920’s, and possibly Gaslight. How to make a long distance telephone call, how to send a telegram, how to finance a loan, or any other mundane task we take for granted in contemporary times but is perhaps a little more difficult in earlier eras. Keeper's Corner Tips from Keepers about atmosphere, rules judging, or anything else an experienced Keeper would like to share with the rest of the gaming world. Personalities Thumbnail biographies of historical figures, around 500 words plus stats. Personalities can be 1920s, Gaslight, or contemporary. Some historical figures may span more than one era. Art Submissions We will need various pieces of art for the magazine. Most of these will be assignments to fit the needs of published materials. Pay rates are as follows: Handout artists receive 20 EUR/Dollars per handmade handout. Map designers receive 20 EUR/Dollars per map. People who find and scan photographs that are printed get 2 EUR/Dollars per photograph printed. If interested, please contact us with samples of your work.
  20. Hi guys. Just registered and having a nose around. Hopefully my sig speaks for itself. I'm very happy to see BRP the book being published at long last, and its nice to see fan support like this site as well. Hopefully this will be a renaissance of gaming for me as BRP was always my go-to system.
