  1. A few "Let's Cast Just in Case" as the heroes traverse a section of the path laden with potential ambush sites will give them a sense of well-being that can be punctured by the advent of an attack as the potential ambush site is left behind. Hit and Run attacks using missiles will deplete MPs just fine as the heroes keep trying to close as well as maintain magical defences.
  2. I think so too, but the poster's comments make more sense if you put 'D&D' in many sentences. e.g. "There are no spells" unlike D&D "that allow for much in direct magical assault." "you need a selection of spells so that a player can feel more like a" D&D " spell caster." "gave the feeling of a" D&D "Sorcerer, instead of a warrior that knew a few tricks." "the ability to resurrect players" like in D&D "is a problem I've noted in BRP core books. " "The ability to bring back those who have died is a staple of Fantasy RPG's" like D&D. See what I mean. If he wants a game like D&D then BRP may not be for him despite what he's saying.
  3. I'm interested to know which of any fantasy (low, medium or high) material allows for resurrection of characters. It might be a 'staple of Fantasy RPGs' but it isn't a staple of Fantasy per se. The only raising of the dead I normally read about involves necromancy and the undead. To be honest if you want a magic using character who is a multiple enemy killing machine then perhaps BRP is not the best choice of RPG.
  4. 4E has spell durations of Encounter (5 minutes or until the encounter ends), until the end of the caster's next turn, and until the end of the target's next turn. As 4e is very combat oriented the spells are too. My comment was mostly flippant, but your exposition was very welcome. I see one poster has confused the duration encounter with the once per encounter usage for 4e spells. I was opurely talking of the duration.
  5. Isn't 'Duration of One Scene' what 4e Encounter powers are? When I get a chance I'll have to sit down and read the sample material later this evening.
  6. Worked this morning. Thanks. A quick read through and I'm very impressed, clear descriptions, nice formatting, very readable fonts, the sidebars readable but not intrusive. Someone has done a very good job on layout. Nigel
  7. Not working for me with either Chrome or Firefox.
  8. ORTrail your comment about the cost of the pdf is interesting. I consider the amount of work that went into the book (text and illustrations) in determining what I'll pay for it. Top price for a pdf would be one that is properly indexed with hyperlinks both in the index and from the TOC. If it reflowed and substituted captions for pictures to acommodate my PC and an e-reader I'd be even more pleased. A scan from an OOP book would have to be pure gold to pay more than a pittance. At minimum I expect the text to have been OCR'd so I can copy and paste for making improved gaming materials. Good explanations of game mechanics are high priorities as are profuse examples although I'd be happy to see those not shown in the e-reader version. Current ePUB technology allows for these features but obviously the average RPG author while able to write may have issues with layout skills etc. as we see with the errors in so many books. If people learn nothing about professional layout they should at least understand that heavy graphics are fine in a printed book but a hindrance in a pdf format. I do note that Paizo have begun to offer less graphical versions of the material in pdfs.
  9. So far none of the material from either MRQII Empires or MRQI Guilds, Factions and Cults has made it into Legend format. Both will slot right in to Legend however. Empires has details of the Renown skill which I find to be very useful in determining if the heroes have any local influence and in determining if they can get an audience with the nobility compared to the slightly less focussed Influence only skill.
  10. I found the MRQI Guilds, Factions and Cults and MRQII Empires books very useful for determining organisations. For example in my Lankhmar game: The House of Red Lanterns The courtesans’ guild The House of Red Lanterns is run by a small ‘council’ of madams that oversee the accounts and actions of the whores’ guild. The order is named on account of courtesans walking the streets with candle-lamps of red paper or lanterns with red glass, identifying their trade. The House of Red Lanterns has strong ties to the Slayers’ Brotherhood. The murder of courtesans is punished in kind and almost all Red Lantern girls are protected by nearby Slayers or guild-employed pimps chosen by the madams. Unlike the Thieves’ Guild, the Red Lantern members do not frown on freelance competition, since the guild’s courtesans are generally a cut above the average streetwalker and receive the lion’s share of the attention and business on the cobblestone streets of sinful, decadent Lankhmar. 11. Actually some of these concepts first appeared in an RPG back in 1977 with Chivalry and Sorcery.
  12. This is very nifty, thanks for making something very useful and posting it for free to the community.
  13. The BRP Central computer seems faster this morning. Is it the upgrade or just willful thinking on my part? Nigel
  14. If they are .ODS files produced by one of the Open office/LibreOffice software packages they can be exported as PDFs.
  15. I'd like to thank our esteemed site manager for getting BRPCentral back up after the hack. Nigel
  16. How about D4+2 for SIZ, D6+3 for STR, 2D6+6 for APP/CHA for human like appearance as some faeries can be attractive unless you regard that as a glamour. CON should be high - 2D6+6 as should INT, POW and DEX. Nigel
  17. What comparison lines should be in such a chart? Skills - Base 0% or STAT+STAT? Number of skills? Base Design style - S&S, High Fantasy, Planetary Romance, Pulp Period (if relevant) HP Pool vs. Hit Locations?
  18. Spence - look at post number 12 above. If no-one writes stuff they don't publish material. Get yer pen out.
  19. I've been reading this thread and others across the 'Net with interest. Is there an application that can produce the two column format with in-line and full page graphics currently used for many RPGs but also display in a single column format with or without graphics. Two column format is very hard to read on smaller tablets/readers so reflowing into a single column format would help a lot. With internal links in the index rather than page numbers the change in page numbers wouldn't even matter.
  20. Sounds very useful to me. Are they specific to any particular variant of BRP or do they work for any via setup files? Nigel
  21. Arms and Equipment for RQII had rules for enchanting things. I don't know if the Legend version still has those (some things were removed besides the RQ/Glorantha stuff).
  22. Has anyone produced a couple of political, merchant or noble factions that I can file the serial numbers off of and reuse? Nigel
  23. or does the header picture at BRP Central always make you think that the short bearded guy and the slim guy in armour are holding hands under the table?
  24. Bump! Anything happening on this utility? It's partly working for me but it won't add any new armour types i.e. hide/natural skin on a creature. Nigel
