Hi all,

Hope this is the right subforum, please move if not.

I really like the openquest rules find them just about the perfect level of detail, was wondering if you could use them with classic fantasy for some dungeon crawling.

thanks

Jason

As a general rule, yes, almost any D100 supplement can be used with almost any D100 rules set without many problems.

As for openQuest and Classic fantasy, I think it would be relatively easy to do this. After all, Classic fantasy has its own spells, so you probably don;t need the OpenQuest spells, you can use the Classic fantasy stat blocks with OpenQuest fairly easily and can decide which parts of Classic Fantasy you prefer over OpenQuest and vice versa.

Not sure about mixing OQ with Classic Fantasy. I suppose it would not be too hard to add Classes to OQ.

OQ can definately do old school Dungeon Crawls just as long as you dont throw endless hordes at the characters, as their HP are much lower than D&D/OSR counterparts.

I run old Fighting Fantasy gamebooks with my primary school sons, using OQ as the system, and it handles it fine. Great fun!

Thanks for all the advice.

If I can do dungeon crawling, with out the classic fantasy book, that would be a cheaper solution and gives mw more money to buy OQ products :)

I was really interested in it for the bestiary. Not sure how many monsters covered in the deluxe OQ.

How hard would it be to convert old OSR modules to OQ?

Chris Tooley (who hangs out in the magic world section of this site) uploaded a truly gigantic bestiary that converts D&D monsters to BRP. I forget the name but maybe someone else can speak up. You might consider downloading it.

Check out our homebrew rules for freeform magic in BRP ->

No reason for Ars Magica players to have all the fun!

It is the "Big Damn Book of Monsters". :)

Chris Tooley's pdf is for BRP Magic World, although considering its totally free then that's not much of an issue as you can pretty much convert on the fly. During an actual game you only need to know Hit Points values, and skill scores, and they should port across pretty seamlessly from BRP MW to BRP OQ.

As far as Dungeon Crawling goes you dont need Classes for OQ Basic. Just allocate skill points according to your character concept and it will just end up falling into a niche.

It's pretty much the same in the full OQ rules, except it provides an optional build for magic specialists in those rules, and you get access to a wider range of magic.

To play classic old school, dont allow non-magic specialists to start with spells, and allocate double the listed spell points as pts in 'magic potions' instead, uding Basic Magic for the potion effects. That is fair and provides a very OSR flavour. Make sure they choose at least one healing potion each!

OQ can do classic fantasy quite well as a nice simple game, I really like it for such, and as an OSR game it sits somewhere between Fighting Fantasy and Basic D&D, yet also plays like a less complex RQ.

But if you want a little more meat on the bone, then Mythras + Rod Leary's Classic Fantasy is obiviously excellent as well, it plays like RQ with AD&D trappings.

So it depends on the complexity of OSR that you are after. Botb games are great.

Thanks for all the input.

Downloaded Chris Tooley's pdf. Looks really great.

We are going to start with OQ to get started with D100, detailed enough right now. Looked at Mythras but was way to much detail to remember.

Like the idea of converting to potions instead of spells. We have a small player group so if they all use a little magic I think that may help.

Mankcam,

Are the HPs different between Magic World and BRP?

I dont think so, but I will check later today and get back to you.

From memory the default HP = (SIZ+CON)/2 for all BRP games except RQ2 which was based on a table which used CON as a core indicatof, and had SIZ as a modifier, or vice versa (I probably need to clarify that as well)

There's a 'heroic' variant where HP = SIZ+CON too -- but HP=(SIZ+CON)/2 is the standard.

You can do dungeon crawling with any of the D100 range. We've been dungeon crawling with RuneQuest for many years.

What Classic Fantasy does is to allow people to use D&D style structures (Class, Levels, Spells) in a D100 environment, to give a D100/D&D experience. That's a little different from dungeon crawling in D100, though.
