Thebadgamer98 Posted October 30, 2016 Share Posted October 30, 2016 I just discovered BRP great family of d100 RPG's recently and I gotta say, I really like the look and feel of it so far. My only problem is that I don't have a group of friends to try it out with. You see, I'm military, and I'm stationed a few thousand miles from home, so all my role playing friends are on a time zone separate from mine. I'd use Roll20 and Skype to play with them, but they don't like the idea of playing that way. So, here I am, asking for help in finding a group of players for one of the BRP games that's willing to accept a brand new player into their ranks. g33k Posted October 30, 2016 Share Posted October 30, 2016 I know that RPG's have a devoted following in USAian military services -- like every military service -- EVER -- it's filled with "hurry up and wait" so you gotta fill that "wait" with something... I have a suspicion that you might do better looking around your base/station/assignment/etc, find out if there are any existing gaming-groups. While this is "BRP Central" it's also a world-wide site without (afaik) any good facilities for "player seeking group" connections. Assuming you can game off-base, and are stationed in a medium-sized city or larger, or near a college/university, there is a decent chance you have a "FLGS" and might connect with a group via that store. You might also poke at "Meetup.com" for local groups; it's an online site oriented to connecting local groups of people with like interests, who might not otherwise find one another. I have found gaming groups near me, as well as some of my other interests. If you mention your nearest convenient city, you might be able to solicit info/opinions about the local "RPG scene" from anyone here who knows about it. If nothing else... start your own group. Grab one of the excellent free/cheap rulesets & free/cheap adventures to match. Play through it "solo" as if you were GM'ing, and run all the PC's, to capture the "flow" of the game. g33k Posted October 31, 2016 Share Posted October 31, 2016 There are some nice SHORT instances of the rules; for purposes of this discussion, I am equating "SHORT" as quick/easy to learn (not always identical, but the quality of writing is generally very very high from all BRP publishers). Chaosium's own BRP "Quickstart Edition" is free in PDF ($10-$15 printed, I think), and includes several very-short scenarios (in different genres) in the back. Design Mechanism's "Mythras Imperative" is also short, and I believe very-similarly-priced in PDF/Print versions (not sure if it includes adventures...?). Actually, I noticed that the free PDF is no longer available on Chaosium for the Quickstart Edition. The print edition is $11.95 and does not come with the PDF version. I should've listed the CoC one, for sure; but IMHO the "OQ basic" (while a fine game) is longer than ideal... I mean, it's longer than the RQ2 book (which was the foundation-game for the whole BRP family). OTOH, maybe the OP is ok with a bigger/longer product for this, and my own choice of "SHORT" books is irrelevant... even an undesirable criterion! In which case, by all means DO look at OpenQuest! Also "GORE," and Cakebread&Walton's "Renaissance" line, and the new SRD for Alephtar's "Revolution D100", & ... hmm, I'm sure there are others... In all cases, btw, I encourage you (once you have a game you're happy with) to buy the real printed books... both to get the entire game (not just the "quickstart" basics), and because my own gaming-table experiences suggest that More Fun happens at tables where the printed books are present. :-) Not that digital copies are "bad," but as with many social settings the e-factor can distract from the "main event," and if EVERYONE is already "supposed to" be hitting their device any time they have a question, the whole gaming-table looses focus.
