Pentallion Posted April 22, 2019 Posted April 22, 2019 For the year 1625, Eleven Lights pg 162: Quote The Lunars defeat and kill Broyan. Lunar magicians from the Field School of Magic use terrible magics to summon and bind a demon they direct to murder him. For the year 1627, Guide to Glorantha, pg 738: Quote King Broyan, a man of great honor, came with his army. White Bull, Pillager of Pavis, came when Argrath asked his brothers to come. Chieftains of Prax came, and they were called the Army of the Bull. The armies clashed at Sword Hill. To undermine 11L even further, the GtG continues to say: Quote Shortly after that the lands of Kethaela, south of Sartar, were plundered by fleets of the horrible Wolf Pirates. Their valiant king, Broyan, was killed defending his folk, and the land fell to ruin. The people asked King Argrath for help. I've always been under the assumption that the GtG is canon and so I guess 11L is incorrect? If so, do Lunars kill Broyan or Harrek? The GtG is not clear on this. Quote
metcalph Posted April 22, 2019 Posted April 22, 2019 The Guide section that you are quoting from is Argrath's Saga which is a in-gloranthan document and written many years later. It is not a factual retelling of the events of the Hero Wars. The Glorantha Sourcebook has Broyan killed in 1625 ST. (p206) as does RuneQuest Glorantha p43. 4 2 Quote
Charles Posted April 22, 2019 Posted April 22, 2019 My memory of a posting (by Jeff?, by Greg?) from several years back is that Broyan, as King of the Hendreiki, broke a geas relating to obligations due to the Only Old One. It is quite possible that he was unaware of the geas and possible that, even if he did know, he would have been unable to fulfill it, as the Only Old One is gone. That broken geas made him vulnerable to attacks by darkness entities. Another different version that I recall (which may not be exclusive) is that Broyan acceding to Harreck's demand to loot The City of Wonders (whether or not he had any choice or anyway to stop Harreck) made him an oathbreaker and vulnerable to demons. 1 Quote
Rick Meints Posted April 22, 2019 Posted April 22, 2019 One thing to remember: Eleven Lights was written a few years AFTER the Guide to Glorantha. 1 Quote Hope that Helps,Rick Meints - Chaosium, Inc.

As Peter noted, this is an in-world document, not a GM text. It's just like the references to "Argrath" helping to raise the dragon in King of Sartar. You can also see the similar in-world references to Broyan on KoS p.18 "Their valiant king, Broyan, was killed (67) defending his folk" where (67) "For a different account of his death, See CHDP." (i.e. Composite History of Dragon Pass). and KoS p.125 "In Kethaela, King Broyan marched north with a small volunteer army. Among the Kitori, a little bright light was snuffed out, and a demon which had many sharp mouths was let out of its skin. It sought vengeance, and fell upon the army of King Broyan while they slept. The king could not keep it away, because he had betrayed the City of Wonders, and he was killed there, with his army." Also see RQG p.43 for our official game chronicle in Year 1625: "At the same time, King Broyan was killed by Lunar sorcery." Jeff notes it in his Heortland writeup as 1625 as well: "The High King returned to Whitewall late the following year with a new army of adventurers, mercenaries, pirates, and devotees, preparing to invade Dragon Pass, but in 1625 the High King was assassinated by Lunar sorcery. " Best way to reconcile is to consider that someone has claimed Broyan's title and leads some Heortlanders north to aid Argrath in 1627/8. 1 Quote Nochet: Queen of Cities | Nochet: Adventurer's Guide | Nochet: Great Library | Edge of Empire
