  1. Yeah, and I think it's the right way to go. Since SIZ is a weird hybrid of mass and reach (height) it's hard to quantify and apply to a rules system. I've always thought that some of the strength of BRP is that it can be abstracted and can be played fast and loose. When viewing an attribute, I generally take it at it's most optimum use. That's why I included SIZ in the equation. If one wanted to get crazy with it, they could factor a low CON or STR in to determine whether the SIZ stat describes a large athletic person or not. One could also incorporate body sizes from Stormbringer4. That's too crunchy for my taste. There's a lot of number crunching in this thread, which is good. I haven't bothered to do that. I'm only concerned is whether something is slower, as fast, or faster than something else. So, using the BRP0 rules and my simple equation (1'm assuming Humans are 3d6 with an average of 11): Centaur MOV 20 Human MOV 11 Horse MOV 19 Elf MOV 12 Dwarf MOV 9 Halfling MOV 11 Orc MOV12 Giant MOV 72 Wolf MOV 11 Hawk MOV 16 etc. It works pretty well. One issue is that vehicles and PC/NPC MOV rules won't work the same unless you want to assign stats to vehicles.
  2. I use MOV = (DEX+SIZ)/2. It was mentioned on this board that SIZ isn't a great way to indicate movement because you get the really fast fat guy. I still think it's a simple and effective solution. I've also played around with having MOV be affected by the character's skill by multiplying the Stat by the Skill. Say you've got a character with a MOV of 11 and Climb 56% and Run 106%. The character would climb at a speed of MOV 7 and run at MOV 12. Problems with this approach are: 1. It's more work than people probably want to put in to a Stat that, in my experience, doesn't get that much use. 2. You have to make the lower ends of MOV more granular. I don't have BRP0 on me right now, so I'm looking at Stormbringer5. A horse there has an average SIZ 26, Dex 11, placing it at MOV 19. A Run 60% would put the horse at MOV 12. The approach works pretty well but could be seen as breaking down at extremes. Using frequent MOV:MOV contests and puting in fatigue or stamina rules helps even it out.
  3. Ah, Ebros. Haven't seen that name in awhile. I enjoyed the character creation process that you had on your site years ago. I think I even have it saved as a file someplace. Lots of good ideas. Glad you're on the boards.
  4. To be fair here, Chaosium published Lovecraft, Moorcock, Pini, and Niven. Hardly a reading list for today's youngens! Yes, I read all of them when I was in highschool, but that was a while ago, as I'm now 30. As a note of hope, I know a few gamers who occasionally play BRP and are under 25. I am also planning to introduce the game to my daughter and son when they're old enough. Just doin' my part.
  5. Yeah, I like my zero edition too. I think Chaosium should take the time necessary to put out a stellar product rather than rushing to the market.
  6. Young drohem, to obtain Bodhi, one must dissolve the ten fetters that binds one to the wheel of samsara.
  7. Yup. PMed Triff as I posted. Figured posting and PM would take care of the issue faster.
  8. Didn't know where to put this, so I put it here. The user was Jeannette. It's a Buddhism spam directing to a website with Buddhism links. She has zero forum posts. Can we ban her please?
  9. For swashbuckling fun, check out the mook rules in Green's Lords of Law (sadly no longer in print). It boils down to this. A mook can attack, but not parry or dodge. A solid hit on a weak mook kills the mook. Two solid hits on a strong mook kills the mook. I've used it for high powered play and it simulates 'wading through your enemies' nicely. The only issue is that players become a bit overconfident. So, I'm pretty specific when I'm using mook rules and when I'm not. As for Sparrow, I'd give him a really great DEX and CHA (APP) and a decent STR. He's not a big guy, so I'd work the DB to somewhere around +1d4. He's also a bit of a drinker, so I'd give him a low CON. However, his movement and fighting skills are easily over 100%. He seems to also have a lot of Fate points to burn. Keep in mind, I've only seen the first film, so assesment might need adjusting.
  10. But scrambling is far too complex and it slows down the morning egg routine. It can also necessitate an associated bowl and fork in order to blend yolk and white, as well as some milk to give it body and perhaps some chopped onion and ham for flavor. Whereas, if you go with a fried or over easy egg, it only entails the cracking and the dropping of the egg onto the heated pan and a flip to ensure that both sides are done. Midday crackings are undoubtedly hard boiled eggs, in which case, putting the egg in your palm and rolling it against a flat surface is the most efficient way to thoroughly crack the shell... Wait, what were we talking about again...?
  11. This threads got me all nostalgic. I must be on an animation kick because I'm thinking about how two different games would play out using BRP. First would be Thundarr the Barbarian, the second, that old Spartakus cartoon with the pirates, the turtle ship and the dance that we call Flashbic. With Thundarr I'd be able to randomly shout out cool things like 'Demon Dogs!' and 'Lords of Light!', but with Spartakus I could play the cool menudo song in the background. And there are pirates... Difficult decision.
  12. Damn, I forgot those existed. I've paged through those books. I think Wizards is the only game I know of that has a dedicated skill for Fine Manipulation using the character's toes. The other thing I vaguely remember are the mutants in the back of the Scortch book. Fun Stuff! Definitely worth looking through. Years ago I saw this film on HBO. I didn't catch the name of it and spent years looking for it, on and off. I finally caught it again and your description is pretty apt. In fact, I'd say Sword of Shanarra is to LotRs as Starrchasers is to Star Wars.
  13. Two Bakshi movies mentioned on one page. Does my heart good. Speaking of old cartoon movies, anyone every see Starchasers: Legend of Orion? It's a bastard hybrid of Star Wars and Heavy Metal. It could make for a fun one off.
  14. Hmm, I think what we're seeing is going to be what we get if there are no corrections. I do agree though, flipping through it seemed like there were a few duplicated captions. I just mentioned the ones I knew of for sure.
  15. Haven't had a chance to give the book a good reading yet. I keep repeating to myself that the weekend is coming! Still, pg. 294 and 323, the pictures have the same caption. Something about players foiling the GM. There's also the typo in the Afterword and the MOV issue with Horses.
  16. You're right, I missed that. I will point out that the horse MOV is 4 on that chart and the Creature write up is MOV 12. Mind you, I'm not being critical of the book. I'm just pointing out an inconsistency because Atgxtg asked.
  17. Well... I rather view it as an artifact of the system. DEX is a combination of agility and manual dexterity. SIZ is a combination of height and weight. If you're a big guy or gal, you're going to control the movement options in your immediate area. If you're dealing with an extended movement contest, you're going to have to deal with CON checks. I view 'fatman' as a character with a high SIZ and a low CON. I also think Aragorn (who is tall and healthy) can cover more ground than Frodo (who is short and healthy). Hence, the houserule. After POW, SIZ is the strongest stat in BRP. It affects both damage bonus and hit points. Anyone who wants to 'game' the system is goning to put points in SIZ, and not for a high MOV stat.
  18. I've had a chance to glance over the movement rules for vehicles. It actually operates on two different systems. Vehicles have a 'Rated Speed' and Creatures have a 'Move.' To give you a comparison, under the equipment section, a horse has a Rate Speed of 2. Under the Creatures section, a horse has the Move of 12.
  19. If no one answers before I get home from work I'll pull out the book and give you an answer. As a side note, I never liked how Move was assigned a number. I houseruled that Move=(Dex + Siz)/2. It works well.
  20. I've ordered directly from Chaosium many times and I've never had to wait for more than a week for my stuff to arrive. Six weeks is an extreme exception, not the rule.
  21. Really? I ordered mine the day after the free shipping deal was up. Mine also shipped on Dec 28th and was #70. Sounds like you fell through the cracks somehow.
  22. I was traveling after Christmas. On New Years Eve I drove back to New York. Got in at about 9 o'clock. The package was waiting for me. I'm #70. Great way to start a new year!
  23. Drove back from traveling on New Years Eve. My book was waiting for me. Number 70. Great way to start the new year!
  24. Sounds like they recycled those ship rules for Sailing on the Seas of Fate. I think they work very well. They give game mechanics to ships, but those mechanics are rarely actually needed until they are really needed, which I feel is a good thing.
  25. Well, I wasn't going to buy it, but after the free shipping offer expired, I broke and bought one anyway. When I get my book I'll post the number here.
