  1. From what I've read so far.... The magic, psionic and superpowers are pretty good. I'm not too thrilled with the Sorcery or Mutation rules. Sorcery is pretty much just the spells from the Elric! RPG, the mutations seem like a short list of chaos features. I loved the Creature section..... I was pleasantly suprised by the Xenomorph entry. >:->
  2. During the 1800's it wasn't unusual for Doctors to use "extra" pieces lying around to cover their books. Nor was it unusual to have "special" leather harvested from executed criminals. Some times the record of their trial and execution would be bound with their own flesh.
  3. Right-o. Time to pour bleach into my ears again. Anyways. Of all the RPG's I've got BRP is pretty simple at it's core. Any of the complicated bits are up to you to add or not.
  4. Mine came Yesterday! From what I've skimmed of it today it's a fantastic book.

  8. Well it was pretty much Ravenloft during the 1890's. There was some big stink in this world's ancient Egypt that unleashed a evil force called the Red Death. It was an interesting game, the first "modern" D&D game I think. A fair amount of it was unfortunatly the same Ravenloft Monster Mash pastiche. Still the rules were decent enough for doing Victorian Horror Roleplaying back then. I think one of the adventures in the main box set involved that particular party.
  9. If Chaosium never came up with Call of Cthulhu the rpg, I would have. Back in the early 90's I discovered Lovecraft and Roleplaying. I had a good adaptation of the Masque of the Red Death rules when a friend pointed out the pre-existing RPG. I don't deny the rpg has greatly helped spread his and his friends work. One of the things I love about the gentleman from Providence is the circle of friends and pen-pals he had. Through Lovecraft's work I've found a world of other authors. Robert E Howard and Clark Ashton Smith being my two favorite. Smith's writing btw can make Lovecraft's writing seem positively simple.
  10. He did write some decent Conan stories. I was pissed about the Wheel of Time, but not that pissed. I simply did the sensible thing and stopped buying his books. Too bad he was a good author, the story just seemed to move out of his control.
  11. Lord Dunsany is a early and pretty good weird fantasy Author. His short stories run the gambit from Fantasy, Horror and Hashish. He wrote stories about elven princesess many years before Tolkien. As far as good ole H.P.L. I hear where you are coming from. His writing style and stories are definatly not for everyone. I'm a pretty big fan of Lovecraft and the writers he befriended in the jaz age. Right now I'm on a Robert E. Howard binge, very different from H.P.L. I feel Howard's stories have less of the issues you mentioned. AS far as Fantasy I've read but disliked.... well I've got a love/hate relationship with Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I loved the initial first four or five books. After a while I got pretty pissed that he was ignoring the main characters and to a degree the main plot.
  12. One of the things I enjoy is brainstorming campaigns. Here's a few of my favorites, feel free to add your own to the thread. The Goode Folke Long ago in the Hills of Southern Britan a battle was fought between our world and another. A malevolant force haunted a nearby dense and twisted forest. When children and livestock began to vanish the woods were searched by the menfolk. At it's center a cirlcle of obelisks, shaped from still living wood. The center was littered with the bodies of the missing children. The men took up fire and axes to the foul things. However they found the threat was not physical, but a mental one. Of the thirty men that entered, a mere 12 emerged from the ordeal sane. Emboldened by the prescence of the villiage priest they destroyed the foul monuments. What ever force that inhabited the forest was banished back to the netherworld It crawled from. It has been over 1,000 years. The Force has re-entered our world, hungry for blood and revenge. It's instrument is a young priest, a descendant of the village priest that thwarted It's hunger. First the It warped his body, then broke his mind. The wretched Fomorian travels the land reactivating places of power long dead. It hunts the decendants of the 29 men that accompanied it. It is their blood That will free it's master.
  13. A Pulp CoC game... more in the Vein of R.E.Howard's version of the Mythos. It's going to be square jawed adventurers and low level super heros vrs Cultists. If the game goes on long enough it might even turn into a WWII Delta green style game.
  14. I just realized... are you talking about the Mongoose books or the CoC special edition? The mongoose ones were glued of course and fell apart quickly. I never snagged a Copy of the Leather CoC book so I couldn't tell you if it were glued or stitched. I suspect it was stitched, but I won't know till I snag one off of E-bay.

  16. Speaking of Stun... are there rules for Lethal and Non-Lethal wounds in BRP? I don't find the extra book keeping all that bothersome and it does make fistfights a little more sensible.
  17. I'd prefer a system that roles high. I've been playing Call of Cthulhu and Elric long enough to be used to role low.
  18. I'm a fan of Pulpy stuff. Most of the games near and dear to my heart are. Call of Cthulhu, Adventure, Runequest, Hollow Earth Expedition, Eden Unisystem
  19. I prefer the way MRQ handles it actually. Base chance of a skill = Stat+Stat. I find it places more of an emphasis on the diffrent attributes. I generaly found the starting skill precentages in Call of Cthulhu a little frustrating.
  20. After having several MRQ books fall apart on me, I'd be quite happy to pay a higher price for a sturdy BRP core book. If they did a leather bound one, like that special edition CoC book.... dear me, my inner Biblomaniac is acting up again.
  21. The updated worlds of wonder rules are going to be my first stop. I'm very keen to see how the diffrent kind of powers work out. Then I'll likely start making some Pulp Heroes and Villians.
  22. Well my plan is pretty much... Call of Cthulhu + pre Golden age of Superheros. It's going to be a globe trotting, cult smashing kind of game. Depending on how long the campain goes on the players may even have a chance to smash some nazis too. Fate points are going to be key for the game. I may even consider using some mook rules as well.
