  1. At least one branch of Bardan's Bookmen still exist, the Bright Fletching Company can still be found in the map of Notchet (just northeast of Kena Hill.)
  2. IMG many of the modern sorcery schools are based upon the ancient schools. For example, the Barmalani School gave rise to the Iron Blood School of Seshnela, and it wouldn't surprise me if many other Schools followed suit. Even the more liberal order of Bardan's Book has many spells in common to the Iron Blood wizards, so it wouldn't surprise me if Bardan was a Barmalani Man of All who tried to further develop their magic in the wake of Hrestolism. In much the same way, I doubt the Furlandans exist in their ancient form, but their grimoire (which as Davecake noted, is part of Siglat's canon) and traditions will have created many different Furlandan successors. I imagine several of those will be devoted to warding off the Rathori, in much the same way as their Furlandan ancestors drove off and subjugated the Pendali.
  3. I think Oakfed may be part of The Burners, one of The Many Friends.
  4. Anaxial's Roster gives them the Godlearner name of Phorusrhacus gigantea which is similar enough, and the art given there certainly resembles Phorusrhacidae. In the absence of any contradiction or more recent sources, I'd say they're similar enough.
  5. I'm very glad to be wrong, I much prefer the classical chimerical unicorn over horned horses. It's just with the lack of them in recent publications, I was worried they'd gone away.
  6. Yes, but they're like Goldeneyes, magical horses (with horns). The companion presented them as the traditional legendary unicorn. But looking at the more recent depictions I could find (Pavis: GTA p52, Guide Vol 1 pg320, HeroQuest Glorantha pg209) they're all shown as horned horses. Single hooves, skirts rather than leonine tails; and the only beard was on Ralzakark (who I doubt counts). I think the previous depictions and write ups (such as the one in the companion) are no longer canon.
  7. Presumably somewhere in the Lunar Empire there lies the great Brootopia a city where broo of every animal type lives in peace and harmony with each other.
  8. So Gloranthan Unicorns are horned horses, and not the actual legendary beast? IMG, what the Carmanians introduced were stirrups made of metal (magic gained from the dwarves, who still frown on anyone using metal stirrups) The Praxians and Pentans use leather and sinew stirrups on their mounts, which are often the home of sure-footed stirrups, holding the rider in place as if they were standing on flat ground. Kastok's great work was to combine the two forms of stirrups, mixing spirit and sorcery into something new. It worked brilliantly, up until the point where it failed.
  9. I could also see it being the greatest duty a Danfive Xaron member could perform, following in his footsteps to become a sacrifice and bridge. That might be the most disturbing prospect for that quest, the fact that many of the sacrifices were willing would be horrifying to an Orlanthi.
  10. As an idea: They become the Glowline. Yara Aranis takes the souls of the sacrificed, and weaves them into her great glamour. For as long as the temples of the Reaching Moon stand, they know no peace, no sanctuary; only the existence of powering Lunar magic.
  11. I say why not. In fact, have the bones of a myth: These shifting Merfolk are found as groupings amongst other Merfolk, often understood as analogous to clans or tribes. The most well known to modern Glorantha are the Kelpies of the Rozgali sea (including Mirrorsea Bay); they take the shape of the Hippocampus, itself a creature stuck between two natures (horse and fish). The Kelpies see the Hippocampi as their kin, as much their family as the Ludoch; and will often be found with herds of the wild horses of the sea.
  12. Some may argue the opposite, that becoming a demigod means enmeshing yourself within the Cosmos, reducing your connection to the All. After all, the Gods are (usually) far more bound to it than any mortal is. This is why it's incorrect to sacrifice to mystics and other teachers, for doing so entraps both them and the sacrificer within creation. It is far better to follow their teachings and example. To achieve a connection with the All.
  13. If you don't mind fan made stuff, I did write some stuff about Unicorns, which may be useful for ideas. http://zzabursbrownbook.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/unicorns.html
  14. Looking again at Tharkantus, I don't see any linguistic similarity to Meldek (Emptied), apart from the k, which would be rather spurious. Together with it's -us ending, it's unlikely to be a Theyalan name. Kantus as a suffix is found primarily within the lineage of Avivath (Latkantus, Vorlatkantus, Meslatkantus, and Merbeskentus), which could refer to a hearth. It is unknown in meaning (well, -us being a masculine suffix itself). If we assume this to be Empty, it would have linguistic similarity to Kar (not). Saving is likely a translation of Thar, as his role of guardian and protector. A hollow tutelary spirit who guards the hearth. Also from that page we get Daysenerus meaning Pure/(Ultimate)All Light. While the Dara Happan for all is likely derived from Glor, meaning collective, which we do not see here; Day in this instance could be a theophoric reference to Dayzatar's purity, or Day could mean pure as well as first (since the Dara Happans do associate purity with a singular existence). Senerus would presumably refer to light in some way.
  15. My thoughts on this from my notes trying to figure out Dara Happan (naturally YGWV, and these are likely highly heretical): Yelmalio: Yu seems to be Firespeech for Imperial/High/Celestial, with Y(u)-Elm being Imperial Sun. No Dara Happan names end with an o sound, suggesting this isn't Dara Happan native. In Theyalan we don't find -alio as a suffix, but we do find -liol (Blessed of). If his name was Yelm-liol, with the a added as epenthesis, and the last l dropped; it would make some sense. While often given as Little Sun, Yelmalio may be Blessed of the Imperial Sun, referring to his role as the son of the sun. Tharkantus: Th seems to mean spirit or being, as seen in Yuth (Imperial Spirit, or god), the various -gatha names (probably gat-th-a, or spirit home/avatar), and the four Overseers. Specifically the four Overseers include it within the syllable "Arth", meaning overseer (or tutelary deity), which is found reversed here. Th-ar likely has the same or a similar meaning, regarding his role as a guardian of the Sun Domes. I am unsure over the meaning of Kan, although it is also the same as Ken in several other names, as well as Kan. Daysenerus: Day likely means first (Dayzatar (First Child Overseer, referring to his birth order, and role overseeing the heavens), Dayen (Preceeder, one who goes first,) Dyan (One)). Sen may be a corruption of Shen (Foot), and Er is a masculine syllable of some kind (possibly man?) Dayserenus could be the First Foot Man or herald. Nysalor's Harbinger.
  16. So one might say they're culturally prejudiced, rather than religiously prejudiced? They don't like horses because everyone knows that horses are the foreign beast ridden by invaders. But when the Pol Joni and Zebra Riders join the Way of Waha, their religious devotion outweighs their beasts' weirdness.
  17. It's important to remember that Beren and Hyalor are also subcults of Elmal, the solar horse riding god of the Orlanthi. The god itself probably hasn't changed, being known by its Sairdite true name; but when Saird was ruled by the Theyalans is also called Elmal, and when ruled by Pelorians is called Yelm the Rider. It's like the mother of Redayla. The southerners call her Ernalda, the northeners call her Oria. The Sairdites know the proper name is Riyesta.
  18. I think it may be more that Yelorna and Ourania both fulfil the same mythic role as the Virginal Queen of Heaven. The Dara Happans just don't view the Queen of Heaven as a martial figure, unlike other cultures. I'm personally assuming that First Council era cult of Yelorna originated with the Berenethtelli Horse Orlanthi of Saird. A celestial rider (on a horse-like beast) and sister to the Sun Rider who married Redaylda the Earth Mare. Her worshippers spread with the Council, uniting with similar cults across Genertela, and spreading their traditions and their name for the Celestial Queen.
  19. Ah, found a reference in the guide, where the constellation tells the story of Foundchild hunting the Silver Deer (probably related to the Deer constellation in front of him.) I imagine the bow part of the constellation is seen as a spear by many cultures, including spear using Praxians. As for his position, there's very little to hunt in the Celestial Desert, it's full of monsters and not anything good to eat. The forest (likely a Celestial Hidden Green to the Praxians) is full of fertility. It's a good place to hunt in the sky, because there's actually celestial animals to hunt there.
  20. Wouldn't the Praxian hunter be Foundchild? This is obviously a linguistic false friend. Ourania may be the New Pelorian form of an ancient Fire Speech name such as Urdanira (possibly meaning Blue Messenger, referring to her Celestial nature, and her role as intercessor between the Sky World and the Middle World)
  21. My view of the Pavic elves is that they were part of Pavis' attempts to recreate the Green Age. As such, their founders included elves from all across Genertela, and even some from across the ocean. Green, Yellow, and Brown elves all cooperate for the good of Aldrya. The Green Temple was what helped maintain their existence. This building was built of shining crystal which focused the power of Yelmalio, nurturing a Great Tree within. Inside are plants from every place imaginable, even some which should be extinct. The Elves no longer let any approach the Temple, but during the second age, it was a pilgrimage site for many agricultural cults.
  22. Viewing anyone with the spirit rune as an apprentice shaman is probably a bit of a mistake. Certainly they can better interact with the spirits, but this does not make them shamans. Waha's cult has always had an association with the spiritual, what with his command of the spirits of law, his cult providing cheap access to Detect Spirits, and having the Rune Spell Discorporation, which involved becoming a disembodied spirit. These are things that would be covered by individual spells in RQ and similar systems, but with HQ:G they would fall under the heading of the Spirit Rune.
  23. That's because of the system using that Rune to indicate something in setting. Praxians have a culture that involves the spirits deeply. Most Praxians can see and talk to them as if the spirits were material beings. This is in HeroQuest: Glorantha terms, the Spirit Rune. Those unfortunate Praxians who cannot see or communicate with spirits are called the Empty, and in HQ:G, don't have the Spirit Rune. Naturally other systems would interpret this differently. If you were to run a Glorantha game in GURPS, you might have a Praxian template including the Medium advantage. To the characters in game, there's no difference, Praxians can see and hear spirits. HeroQuest: Glorantha uses the Spirit Rune to mark such characters because, well, it can. It doesn't have to represent other worlds, so the fact that many cultures use the same or a similar rune to mean Spirit, means that the system can use that Rune to represent a link with them.
  24. Oh certainly, I can't imagine durulz bringdown deer or similar, just the sort of thing you'd find by riversides. And while alligators aren't mentioned specifically, the Sartar Companion does have wild predators showing up in the Upland Marsh, and of those mentioned in their section, River Dragons (Crocodiles) are one of the more likely to appear in the marsh.
  25. Personally, the durulz would be looking forward to a good meal. S:KoH mentions them hunting, so they're not herbivorous, and I imagine their diet is filled with wading birds of many varieties (much as monkeys are found as bushmeat in many cultures.) I would actually base their cuisine on creole and cajun cuisines; a lot of seafood, poultry, and other game meats; found boiled, barbecued, and stewed. Of course, since intelligent animals are part of Glorantha anyway, you could have a durulz and sentient talking duck as partners. With the duck assuming all comments about ducks refer only to itself, and not its companion.
