  1. in contrast, average people in East Asia owned print works. And the codex was introduced in 900 in the Tang capital and immediately replaced all other forms of bound materials, so they had books in their homes, including popular operas and short novelas. Just to clarify the difference: the Tripitaka Koreana was finished in 1087; it was recarved in 1237 after a fire destroyed the originals and these are the 81,258 woodblocks used to print it, weighing about 250 tons. Printing was a massive industry.
  2. this is the difference between literate West and literate East, for sure; the production of early print books in Asia was so much earlier that actual book collections existed; woodblock printing was invented in China sometime after the Han dynasty (when it was used already on fabric) and before the Tang, roughly 400-500 CE (the Koreans invented movable type about 1230, but woodblock printing was extremely prolific) and papermaking was very productive, meaning that thousands of books were in circulation within the Empire within a century, from religious works to the equivalent of early manga/manhwa. I've actually been to Mogao Caves in Gansu, which is the site of the oldest known printed work with a print date, a scroll of the Diamond Sutra dated to 680. We think there are slightly older surviving print works based on the date of internment, however.
  3. The information we have is that the Britons, who were Christian since the Roman times in the West and Southwest!, in practice had significant power for women. (I shy away from terms like "Celt" because there wasn't really shared cultural norms across the channel, nor any awareness of relationship between Britons and Gaels, and the influx of the latter into the Isle of Briton and the probable invasion of the former into Ulster were just "oh shit barbarians".) Hild of Whitby was England's first saint and it's been suggested her ascent to power was entirely powered by tapping into British networks of Christianity, where she would be respected as a political and spiritual leader. Born of noble heritage, she had no route to power in the kingdom of Deira. (Not that I am questioning her conversion, but) Did this power mean only for nobles? Maybe. We don't know. But certainly it was notable in comparison to that of the Germanic societies.
  4. i mean, he wasn't entirely wrong. You can stimulate the right part of the brain (with drugs, electric shocks, or any other method) and get "religious" experiences out of it, although an individual's interpretation of that experience might be secular (and often is, see also: club drugs).
  5. I'd say this was a sick burn, but again, the Fire rune is missing
  6. As a thought experiment, if you were going to model radiation ☢️ how would you present it, mythically, with Gloranthan ideas? I am just playing around in my head mostly with ideas about Zistor and Zistorite horror, and I thought probably Chaos, because it is a taint? But it works like Death, it doesn't mutate you.
  7. I meant we've now surpassed their number of deaths in the US. People kept saying, "It's not like we're going to do the numbers of the Spanish Flu" and we did. They keep saying "it's just the flu", and now they're sort of correct in that 675k Americans died of the 1918 Flu and to date, the official numbers, which are certainly undercounted, are 704k Americans have died of COVID-19. Hell, Florida had more deaths on the anniversary of 9/11 in this year than the actual casualty total of 9/11. And we have advanced medicine, oxygenation machinery, vaccines, and treatment programs.
  8. also your colleague has now been proven dead wrong?
  9. this is an interesting (in the rabbinical sense of interesting) case as Thed is a Chaos goddess who might originally have been an Earth deity - she did demand restitution from Orlanth when Ragnaglar raped her, so I doubt she's a solar deity - and she has a fertility rune. I do deeply doubt this would be accepted unless the broo-child was cleansed of chaos by the "mother" and borne to healthy birth, i.e. the kind of shenanigans that are exactly the kind of thing players get up to and not what people mean by "broo impregnation".
  10. 1 out of 500 Americans has died from COVID and we cannot get people to get their shots, which have been freely available since May of this year. It's a political belief now and no matter of reasoning can convince people to mask or get a shot. It's no longer a matter of discussion, hospitals have security issues because people come in real sick and get COVID diagnoses and then try to beat up the doctors because they don't think it's real. They die denying COVID is real. To their last breath. And everyone else has to suffer because they won't get their shots and we're nowhere near immunity saturation levels. It's like a madness.
  11. There are many Yelornans in Prax. However, that does not mean all Yelornans live in Prax! Also, I think the unicorns aren't very ponyriffic. They're feral killers.
  12. this is a genuinely disturbing and honestly racialising take
  13. yes, certainly this is the reason Esrolia joined Argan Argar's kingdom and why to this day its soldiers are called "Kimantorings" /s
  14. well Vinga is a competitor because she's Orlanth (previously, Orlanth's nibling if you preferred) and thus the other spouse, Wind v. Fire. The third "small competitor" was Heler, who is Water and neither male nor female. These "small-spouse" conflicts were one reason I liked Elmal-guards-the-Stead over Yelmalio (yes, I accept the Evangelical Church of Yelmalio as canon). It was a comradely competition that let us see who impressed Ernalda this year and got to be her lover and what kind of summer we'd have.
  15. black and indigenous are separate things. "Cat Blackard in Consequence of Sound" is both black and indigenous. also, what an insulting commentary on what has been historically a fraught topic for racial reasons! and you do realise that not all gamers are white, right? sometimes they review games and they talk about things you might not care about. 0/10 stars, considering adding you to my ignore list [gratuitous abuse removed]
  16. The best thing to do is have H P Lovecraft exist - and then they meet him and he's this guy, and like in real life, his "Pepe Silvia" is "black people and Jews". Remember, people of his time thought he was a racist-ass douchebag and his books were like "the cosmic horror of Portuguese people living in Rhode Island". Source: I grew up in Rhode Island and my Nana grew up in the house next to his.
  17. he also has his top broo cured of disease-causing so they can function around strangers, and Shrike is a Nysalorean enlightener - he is an active riddler. It's a strong motivator for those who want to be Best Broo, for which there is a competition held among the chieftains. Also uh some of those gotta be female Broo. I know Malia is the go-to when Thed says "you have tits, get out" but Ralzakark wants those CA healers.
  18. I think Humaktis can Sever Chaos as well. There are three CA healer broo in Dorastor, Land of Doom (p. 82): White (for Ralzakark the Unicorn Broo), Bloodrock (for Shrike), and Namyed (for Manslime). Bloodrock is female. The cult workup of the Unicorn Emperor in this old document says 30 of his 300 lay cult initiates are Chalana Arroy worshippers.
  19. there are no parts of those cults that Chaos is banned from. they just need to obey the rules. those cults can tolerate Chaos rune individuals, unlike the majority of other cults in the world, which is why they probably exist in Dorastor. Humakt doesn't care if you are Chaos, nor does Chalana Arroy, so long as you obey the strictures.
  20. turns out you are the House of Korah, too bad
  21. anywhere in the Lunar Empire
  22. interesting, but why on earth would they stay in Dorastor
  23. The Wild Healer must be a really weird outlier since he is male, given the mighty reproductive urges of male broo. I agree he is near-certainly Chaotic. Perhaps he is Illuminated? Notably all the other "unusual cult" Broo are of cults that can accept Chaos-rune cultists. Humakt doesn't care, CA doesn't care. I believe strongly they are in fact all still just normal broo.
  24. they don't have the Undeath rune, and were supposed to represent Cordyceps-like infections of ants, not Chaos. Nonetheless, they are unintelligent. bold assertion! The House of Shammai, represent!
