  1. I would think space would do well with its own specific detailed book. Isolation and the confines of space travel would add a layer terror that I don't think you can get in just one chapter, no matter how well written.
  2. I have never agreed with negative damage modifiers for STR to begin with, so everyone starting off in the negatives seems problematic to me. I realize that is not your overall point, I would just start them at 0 Damage Mod. How does this change reflect in GM controlled adversaries? A naturally strong creature might not have very much training in martial skill and would be denied the bonus to damage their natural ability implies based on that fact. OR they would be given artificially high skills to account for damage bonus? Just something that seemed problematic to me.
  3. Well MSH has a rule for it: use your Karma. It might require a TON of Karma to do that though lol but some games, many of them with legs, do have rules built in for dramatic action.
  4. A lot of times as a game designer I notice that I am trying to not only design a game, but also tell my players how to play. Telling them how to play is different than creating rules and internal consistency, because it imparts an expectation from me onto the player to do it my way or else suffer the "you're doing it wrong" finger wagging from me. Authors and movie makers often do the same thing. IMO White Wolf's designs, as much as I enjoyed them, always made me feel this way as a player. To some degree this is in Mr. Wick's message. There is a lot of "you're doing it wrong" and in one simple sentence he dismisses and disenfranchise a set of games and players because he does not want to play that way or cater to an audience that wants to play that way. Which is his right. Niche indie narrative games are beautiful works of art that win awards. But in fact, D&D IS a role playing game. It has elements of a board game, more so now than in the past I would argue, which makes sense since it is derived from kriegsspiel played by people for years. I do not want people to think I am schilling for D&D (especially on a d100 board) I am just saying that Mr. Wick's sweeping generalizations are a pretty common tactic of disenfranchisement and undercuts his message, whatever that message is. It is similar to one person telling another person their fast food join of choice is not really "fast food" or food at all; you avoid all competition if the potential competitor is denied legitimacy. I think rules give an internal coherence (as you say) and also agency to the players and GM by adding suspense and a layer of physics that helps them define the BOX. It does not keep them captive inside of the box, but let's them know which things are in or out and how they can play with those. If there is no BOX, there is no story IMO because no one has the ability to say "no"; there is no consent. Unless it's gaming Improv, which still has rules one of which is "always say yes". That actually works well and is surprisingly fun.
  5. A great example of less is really more. Too much information, especially if it is not directly relevant, will dilute the message.
  6. Interesting. I like his game designs, but I think he doesn't understand that the reason we look for game balance is that storytelling and narrative play can be out of balance as much as guns and super powers. He obviously is fond of CoC and Pendragon.
  7. Rough Draft of Design Document - 100% Skills: 40% - Finally have my names as opposed to old school place holders. Now I have to write a short but sweet description of each. Experience - 100% - REAL happy about this lol Resistance - 100% - REAL happy about this also Item Creation - 40% - This chapter will be huge but will not be in the Quickstart rules. In some ways items may become more important than spells Soul Magic - 100% Sorcery - 50% Spiral Magic - 75% Hit Points & Hit Locations - 100% Armor, Weapons, & Equipment - 75% Cults of Skaerune - 30% Salt Island - 20% SRD/Design Doc - 30% Skaerune' Setting 35% Quickstart Guide 45% First Short Adventure: Delivery to the Sea is 75% done. Bestiary 25% - Like my new format Getting a Domain and perm website and copyrights and trademarks.. 0.001% Bold Items Saw some Change I also uploaded a new intro guide in the downloads section. It really helped me see what I needed to work on.
  8. The new intro is up in the Downloads section, and the old one deleted. I feel better with fewer grammar and spelling mistakes.
  9. I am doing a hybrid: general HP and a wound system for body parts if damage of a given hit exceeds a Toughness threshold. Tough x 1 = wound Tough x 1.5 = mortal/fatal wound So individual body parts do not have hit points. But I am sure someone has done a pure wound system, I am just not aware of any.
  10. Tomorrow I will be posting a new and updated Intro to Skaerune'. It will be edited better (though not perfect lol) and somewhat more coherent. It will include a section where I briefly discuss some design decisions. In essence it is a preview of the QS guide. I just did not want folks to think it WAS the QS guide, which is coming along nicely.
  11. Thank you! I realize some people may not like 1 creature per page, but I feel like it works for me.
  12. No problem at all. I was going to go thoroughly over those in edits so I appreciate you picking up on it, as I could have forgotten I know the math; I admit I was just lazy about it. What did you think of of the second format vs. the first ones I did? I like the newer format better (bokemono and cormoran giant) and feel like it will look better in the book. I will convert all of them over and use the second format for the new beasties going forward. Thanks for the input
  13. Although it is good to cultivate relationships with artists and work with them and this can lead to a good deal. You should still be fair in what you pay; remember they work hard for their art too. But partnering with an artist or two on projects helps get them invested in it. That could mean a great deal.
  14. I forgot about those Carolina cons. One of those might work out perfectly. I am not ready for Origins or Gen Con quite yet. Thanks!
  15. I have been out of the convention circuit for a while. This year I can make a summer one and if so, I will actually "launch" Skaerune' there. I will be at Jordan Con in April but am running the Sci Fi track there so won't be able to run any Skaerune. However, I am friends with the game director and if anyone wants to run some BRP stuff let me know and I can help facilitate that. (Jordan Con is in Atlanta, GA USA). So are there any decent sized summer conventions that allow someone to schedule and run their own games? It has to be in the US this year, next year I am hoping to be able to afford to go elsewhere. Any thoughts? I will also gladly support anyone who is interested in the running the game at cons as best that I can once the game catches on and gets some interest, which I think it will once the Quick Start guide is done. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
  16. The holidays did renew the energies a bit, for a great many things including the game designs. However, I am in a portion of the Quick Start guide which is dry and a little bleh. I know how the game works why do others need to know! lol So I am reducing the Skaerune time on a given day and devoting it to fun vanity designs or campaigns etc.. I know once I get over this hump it will pick up again. Also, it would be good to actually play a bit as I GM and design more than I play. Playing would definitely help alleviate some fatigue. I did figure out recently how many spells will be in the SkQSG. It is a good selection I think, but I may put out the list to see what others think. Same with beasts. It will be a small list to give folks a taste of the more unique Skaerune' monsters.
  17. Well I think you could make a variant of the FASERIP / Marvel Supers using d100. In many ways the two systems are already not dissimilar. The Karma mechanic can be used for EXP. Talents and Powers can easily be made into %. Even using the OQ ally system for contacts. That is not to say I disagree about HQ being a good supers system. Indeed I always thought HQ would make a great Star Wars system as well (not to derail the convo).

A great deal depends on how well the game is received and what expansions if any are done for it. 19. That would be fantastic. My advice for that is to set expectations and stick to them and get volunteers to help you. Maybe even hit various people up here to write some of the adventures for you within certain guidelines. Living Campaigns are a great way to get interest from people, but players do get invested.
  20. I am only going to comment on my own experience but I feel like there is a validity to it. The idea of a d100 "brand" means something to us, here and over the years to role players who delve deeper into the nuts and bolts of the game. They know that RQ and CoC used the same system, more or less, but they may not even be aware they were once made by the same company (long ago). The basic rpg customer, is not drawn to the d100 system in particular as much as they are drawn to individual brand names. D&D or D20 is a system reference, where RQ or CoC is a game reference. It is a different mindset even though many of them use RQ to run their own non-Glorantha worlds or CoC encompasses many time periods and styles of play, Now OqenQuest has changed that slightly as has Legend as they are designed (I think, correct me if I am wrong) to empower not a specific world, but take advanatge of what was being down anyway for any world you wanted. What I am doing with Skaerune' is a slight step towards the historical, but it will (hopefully) only be the first Q21 game that I do and Q21 will (again I hope) offer players the ability to play in any world and genre they want. So I suppose what I am saying is that the generic system is not what draws the average gamer to d100 games. It is what has been done with them over the years in a myriad of tweaks and genres that draws gamers to games powered by a percentile or d100 system. So making more d100 games does not cause , in my experience, complaints that the "system" is different from one d100 to the other. People just accept it and game on.
  21. I would definitely be interested in seeing that. I would invest in MW to run that for some locals or for Con folks.
  22. May your dice never come up 00... unless you are playing Rolemaster or Marvel Super Heroes Good fortunes to us all in the new year. Blwyddyn Newydd Dda
  23. Right now I am focused on the System portion of the QS Guide. Officially so I can get that prepped, unofficially so I can avoid working on Sorcery and Spiral Magic spells
