  1. and by the way, the rune lord is sleeping, but what about the allied spirit ?
  2. i don't see anything different between rune lord and initiate (or shaman or sorcerer) the rules say (p314) so a gag is useless then i think you have two ways (maybe 3,4, ..) : - be sure your rune lord has no more rune point - use enough iron to have 95% resistance (win win if your RL is chained with iron, magic resistance + ap) - don't know if there is a cult for that but sorcery may create a kind of "bubble" anti magic, where nothing inside can cast or use magic - send the rl in some heroplan jail (or hell or what you want) but if you are powerful enough to do that, you don't need any help, right ? 😛
  3. In that case my answer would be no. 😛 however it is a nice situation (from outside, for sure, poor gm, you may propriate eurmal and malia next time !) For me you forget one option : you propose that you, as a gm, find the solution to let the characters do the scenario. that's your role of course but now.. if you think differently and see your role as your thief player advisor.. play a solo session with him/her You are the ring, you want the thief to do something, something his/her friends will not appreciate You propose the mission, and wait the answer. If the thief accepts it... then you, as the ring, say "there is a problem, your friends... What is your plan to hide our identity and your mission. Fail and we will do what we have to do to save the secret, so what is your plan ?" So now, it is not you (gm) but the player who has an issue 🙂 of course, you can help him/her, share your ideas (oups... ring's ideas), challenge his/her proposals. and who knows... maybe the thief will not be able to find a solution, maybe the thief will fear the ring's decision then, maybe the thief will say the truth and succeed to convince the party to solve the issue. Maybe your campaign now, is about a renegade trying to destroy a lambril's ring, in secret of course because your thief is still a lambrili
  4. of course our glorantha may vary 🙂 in my own version the cult has the two faces, one is more like humakti, serious, intransigent and fair death bringer. They are even able to be diplomat, awesome ! The first one is the group with Axe trance spell but the second one is more like fanatic storm bullers (not all storm bullers, those who are really bullers), enraged, violent, and almost random death bringer.( don't know who is the guilty, kill all the village, daka fal will judge them). The second one is the group with berserker spell. Of course you will find people who are a "merge" : a two faces character (berserker + axe trance) but the spells are incompatible, they have to choose what they are when they "call" their goddess I use spells in my answer bacause it helps me what can be the followers. They are followers because they have in their "nature" what is described by the spells. The spell doesn't bring something new, different from the worshipper, but "exploits" and godly increases the nature of the caster (aka her runes) it is fine for me (however i m a man so maybe some unconscious bias), to have dirty, violent and unfair women warrior (sub)cult. That should not be a male monopoly (yes storm bull is mixed, but what the % of people who first think about a woman when hearing "you see a storm bull worshiper")
  5. maybe however... how did it happen ? because depending on the reason, I'm not sure the clan will allow your guy to keep the gear - is there any wergild for the "victim" ? who will pay ? is the gear just enough to cover the wergild ? - was this fight a decision of your guy ? If yes, well there is a social mobility, but maybe as outlaw 😛 - was your guy expected to work elsewhere when it happens ? So why was he/she there ? If there is no political issue (like above), the boss may require all the gear as compensation, maybe more - was your guy working when it happened and he/she saved courageously the boss wealth ? nice, a reward, however he/she is paid to work... so the gear is for the boss, right ? (something like the mercenary contracts) - was your guy part of raid party / defense / .. anything decided by the clan (so something totally good, brave guy !). Well the gear is for the clan, and the clan ring will decide to manage the distribution.. A part for wergild, a part for the best warriors and leaders, a part for the boss, and maybe congratulation for your guy ! Note that I consider the stickpicker as a member of a clan social organisation (and of course, for me as you can see my answer, a clan organisation will do all its possible to no let a poor become rich . Because... if anyone can become rich just with one fight, who will work for the rich ?). Of course if it is an adventurer without boss/contract, or a bandit without ... boss/contract, it is different. In both cases, a very poor adventurer / bandit may become a richer adventurer / bandit but without any clan's help / law to protect from the family / clan / temple revenge or even local authorities appreciating to "defraud" the strangers
  6. in game design term no, of course. but they are smart enough to notice that a worship in major holydays with great ceremonial and sacrifice in a great temple helps them to call their god more often and more powerfully than if they stay in their little shrine with just an apple to feed their god they don't know if this cliff requires a climb roll with a -80% malus and they don't know if they have 50% or 40%, but except the fools, they estimate (or know from experience) that it will be very hard to climb even for the best of the clan without the winds spirits and gods help.
  7. My gloranthan don't speak english, so I m proud to say : no they don't say "bladesharp" 😛 however, as it is not innate, when they want to learn the effect, they have to say something to explain what they want to shamans or priests or any teachers. And as it is a knowlege, priests, sorcerers or other scholars have even recorded the spells/prayers/spirits their heroes/target/followers used in their libraries. So of course there are words for that. Have you already eaten something without any word (not something you don't know, but something nobody knows ?). And in that case, do you think someone aware about this "unamed" thing will not say "hey I have a name for that !" ? that is not a question of magic, otherworld, or anything, it is just a question of practical. A lot of people (I believe everybody) name things, concepts, effects, etc.. when they interact, know or create them
  8. I would say people could become friends (or more), whatever their origin / clan / cult the only issue I see here is because this cult is and must be secret, the lambrili has to keep his cult secret. So always to go undercover. I think that's the main point, and some dramatic situation he (and the others) will face if the others know. Because he tells them, or because they discover it, he would have to make a choice : who will be betrayed : those who knows ? or the cult ? kill the party or become the next target of Lanbril's followers and spirits of reprisals ? For me that is exactly the same situation irl when spies have to choose between betraying their service or their love/friends
  9. a fusion of both and a third one curve it in Gusbran's forge and you obtain a nice and some fine powers
  10. there are different things in my opinion first, the cult role is as you describe. It means, for me, that the community of bab's sisters should have the skills to find the the truth And noone says that one sister should have all the skills. And noone says that sisters should not require help from other more specialized cults. If I had to build an "avenger" pc, I would probably not choose to find a second cult as soon as possible. First I will decide what would be the priority: - axe master (90+ skill, runespells, bladesharp and other spirit spells) or just good fighter (75+ skill, runespells, not figh spirit spells) -tracker, guard, detective or diplomate (using occupation or personal skills, depending on the first target "axe master" or "good fighter", and with help of spirit magic if accessible... well detect ennemy and that's all ^^) now I m a tracker ? I expect my temple to send me in mission with a clear named target. Of course my cult reputation and my intimidation skill will help me if my friends can't. Then my progression focus will be on investigation skills (i will become better fighter just by experience) and a shaman able to teach me some useful spells not a tracker but a guard ? My role is to protect the temples, but the other specialists may need protection so as a axe master I will accompany them and do the final job. And if I want to follow the way of track and investigation, then my progression focus will be on these skills and a shaman able to teach me some useful spells a detective ? maybe at some point if truth is important, in addition to improve my search, my insight and others skills I will join first as lay member (spirit spells and skills teachers !) and why not at the end of the end if I have not enough success LM cult or equivalent. (of course as detective i've got a good truth) a diplomate ? Yes less good investigator than the detective but... with my relationships, my orate and bargain skills and the power of the Earth temple I have not a lot of difficulties to "hire" hunters, scholars and other to do the job. At the end, it will be me who will cut the heads (or other thing...) My progression focus will be on loyalties, favors so somewhere, I (player) expect my GM to build/adapt adventures to my character when the scenario is about babeester. As for any other pc of course. As a GM it is what I do, what are the pcs ? are they powerful enough (in all senses) to solve a scenario ? Should I adapt the opponents skills ? Should I propose directly some npc help if I know there is a lack of skills in the party ? Or, because I know the players, I bet that they will, by themselves require help in return of some loyalty / oath / or i don't know ? note that I don't say "dual initiation is bad" just that there are some roleplay alternative I consider nice to explore before the "easy way" of rune spell
  11. let she be happy then 🙂 i disliked the concept of "ducks" for a long time (probably because the only pictures I saw decades ago were "ridiculous duck like uncle donald playing with a mouse...") However, reading and understanding how dramatic is the Durluz (hi)story I now see them differently then: if you want to stay "canon" (as I like to be) there is no issue to have a durluz adventurer : - you may find some / few ducks "adopted" in any clan in Sartar. Just define a background explaining why he/she is here (refugee hidden from the hunt, or maybe the durluz has saved someone and is now adopted. You can add some antagonist in the clan if you want (of course some human dislikes ducks, and what a shame to have one claiming to be your clanmate !) - you may find some ducks wandering in any clan in Sartar. With good or bad intent, as you want. - you will find a lof of ducks in the ducks marshlands. With good or bad intent, as you want. The place is interesting if your wife wants someone with some undead business (humakt but not only, any background/passion 🙂 )
  12. the big issue in my opinion is how awesome would be an initiate of "the lightbringers" (of course it may be less than 10 like the seven mothers but pretty sure some people will complain there is not this one, or this one) so many "feats" were done in this quest, so many spells an initiate may learn... all of them usefull for an adventurer, would we have in the sartarite camp players who will choose any other cult than this one ?
  13. there are at least two reasons in my opinion : detect evil : duration = 5 min and cost = 1mp sense chaos : duration = always and cost = 0 well cost = 0... except tables, chairs, and arms destroyed by these drunkards 😛 and there is not only the detection but all the "true" powers to face chaos but is detect evil needed when detect ennemy does a better job (after all, chaos is your ennemy, not "you" = illuminated Nick, i agree, but "you" = sane blind people 😛 )
  14. the main point in my oppinion is difference. As you may have between two clans of the same "people" just because grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand father had an affair with a woman of the opposite clan, imagine when you think about other races I don't knwo where trolls are presented as dumb. they have degenarated trollkins and cave/great trolls but the standard dark troll has the same intellectual capacities than humans. And what about the mistress races, who gains so power that they become demigodesses ? from my perspective: Trolls are different, they have a far different culture and history. Now you, people of the day, fear troll not only because they eat what they want but - they are people of the night. If they attack you at home it is during the night when you don't see, when maybe you sleep. If you attack them during the day you have to find their cave, and there... you don't see - they are stronger than you, they send wave of trollkins and when you don't have any more magic, their powerfull warriors kill you with all their magic. - they ambush, when you are honorable - they are ugly, so ugly than the most ugly of you seems beautiful - their goddesses and gods are terrible and terrific, they love blood and send demon to fear you but you don't know if they have conflict between them, because you don't know if they have kingdoms, feud, and things like that. You are not troll ; you fear them you don't know them and don't try to know them. You fear what they are able to do, so you hate them. They are underworld horrors, not surface people Elves (green / brown / yellow) are different. they have a far different culture and history. Now you people of the fields and cities, fear elves not only because they live in deep forests hidden from others and iou can't see them before they see you but - when you try to have more hides to farm and have more food by cutting their forest, they kill you and your family. - And sometimes even when you do nothing they kill you because they want to grow their forests and take your hides when you just want to live. Elves are bad but you don't know if they have conflict between them because you don't know if they have kingdoms, feud, and things like that. You are not elf; you fear them you don't know them and don't try to know them. You fear what they are able to do, so you hate them. They are wood, not flesh. Dwarves are different. they have a far different culture and history. .Now you people of the fields and plains, fear dwarves not only because they live under mountains you cannot visit but - They have secret plans. You don't know their plans but for sure, they plan to kill your bloodline, your kingdom, maybe your race. - They have secret weapons so destructive you cannot resist. - You never have seen them but you sure they have the largest armies of the world, full of iron and weapons breathing fire and metal. If they want, when they want, to attack you, you know that if there is any chance to not lose the war, the price will be huge. but you don't know if they have conflict between them because you don't know if they have kingdoms, feud, and things like that. You are not dwarf; you fear them you don't know them and don't try to know them. You fear what they are able to do, so you hate them. They are stone (clay), not flesh. That's a human perspective. Of course some are XX friends, some are curious, or open... but just some and pretty sure that a lot of esrolians/lunars/grazelanders/pentans/kralori and some sartarites think the same about Praxian, and some clans think the same about other clans etc...). And of course Troll thinks the same (with there own value, history, etc...) about the other races Same for elves, dwarves, merfolks, etc..
  15. Or see the seven mothers cult each mother provides its own spell(s) but at the end of the day you worship one community of gods so for me it is more how you see these spirits. Do they share something strong enough to be seen (and they have to accept too) as a community of spirits? i mean a shaman should not create a community of spirits just because she wants one « rune pool » and one « worship day ». The spirits by themselves must be « allied » of course after lot of bargain sacrifice and heroquest, a shaman may create such alliance but at this time she would be so powerful that the reason would be more important than just have a personal advantage
  16. I agree however the question is why are there so few such "monsters" (etymological sense) would a lot of heroquesters prefer to "stay" with ther body shape (even if they gain the power) or does their rune resist ? or maybe this shape change occurs temporary, only when the hero uses the power ?
  17. Agreed then there are a lot ways possible ——- as a gm (if they wish) focus on roleplay and social interaction (some npc present in some party when pc were « checking » their skills/runes are in competition to obtain any benefits (job position, clan support for their heroquest, gifts…) of course npc win ——- As a gm use loyalty xxx. Loyalty today is used to augment rolls. And (unfortunately imo) represents the same level of loyalty between the two parties (clan/temple and pc) if pc focus on their « check » and don’t participate enough on their loyalty events then ask for a loyalty roll. If success it means the pc feels she is not enough loyal (reduce loyalty by 1d6) if she fails her clan/temple feels she is not enough loyal (reduce loyalty by 1d6) ————- as game designer define new stats about social interaction . Rqg reputation is not enough imo. For example pc’s loyalty to clan/temple and clan/temple loyalty to pc. when the clan/temple offers gain to the pc, she is allowed to augment her loyalty to clan/temple. When it refuses reasonable help/request she is allowed to reduce her loyalty to clan/temple when the pc helps the clan/temple or acts more generously than expected, she is allowed to augment the clan/temple loyalty to her. when she refuses reasonable request or doesn’t participate enough to the clan/temple regular life, gm can reduce the clan/temple loyalty to her With it split of loyalty Pc’s loyalty to clan/temple can augment skill rolls as the rqg loyalty the use of clan/temple loyalty to a pc offers some opportunities : - helps more than usual the pc - a score of xxx(60%) is required to become godtalker - a score of xxx(90% ?) is required to become rune lord or priest - a score of x1/x2/x3 is required to obtain from the clan 1 / 5 / 12 hides (or other clan facilities Of course it depends on the table and I prefer without rules and only roleplay but for those who loves stat and would have to manage players focus on their own power, that would help to balance
  18. differents options - as @dvdmacateer, that's for the devotee a metaphor : spells are arms/weapons - in mundane world, just a costume with two (or more) artificials (wood) arms, and mask, and lightning, and any attribute - in heroquest, each additional arm may be a companion (after all Humakt may be the sword) - after heroquest, it could be a physical transformation (you gain more real arms) - Eurmal's lie is powerful enough to convince you you have 4 arms but only two are visible
  19. depends on what "version" of chaos you think The compromise was between the Gods (of glorantha ? 😃 aka those who are not the second party) and the chaos Gods. So they are part of the compromise in some ways. Note that I was surprised by this information (I believed the compromise was between the "anti chaos" gods) but @Jeff said differently (of course I don't remember if it is in this forum, facebook or elsewhere) and it sounds interesting by the way how should we call the gods who are not the gods of chaos ?
  20. by default the dex/size ranks determine the order. That is not an action points system (well i would prefer an action points system but it isn't or it is house rule) as @Akhôrahil said, when you have opportunity to have severals attacks, you may be blocked by your strike rank
  21. there is no mention that bless pregnancy change the species (or sub species ?) so if the fate was enlo, bless pregnancy would just provide "better" enlo
  22. you are not trapped, you just leave the mundane world and can't freely interact with it (you need your worshippers to call you) However, if you leave the mundane world, it is to join the gods world. Another experience for you, for ever. Who knows what gods do in their dimension(s) when mortals are not heroquesting
  23. why not ? except in very specific society where you are by nature "guilty" then must "pay", I would say that people like to enjoy and organising enjoyement is part of leadership (bread and circus). I can't see Orlanthi, Lodrili, Ernaldan and Lunar not have fun or seduction. Troll ball is not only (if it is) ceremony. Even Sun County has competion (push shields - or the right english term - ). Dolphins play so merfolk should, same for hunshen I m pretty sure that even old Yelmic are able to have some "distant" pleasure in art or fashion
  24. i see things a little bit differently On the basis of my reasonning, there are hypoteses (from what I believe "canon", if I m wrong do not hesitate to tell me, with sources, to help me to learn more 🙂 ) A) evil (against morale) is not always chaos. Killing a mother and her young children is dishonnorable (honor as dragon pass) but not chaotic. and why not or any "bad" pantheon are not chaos. Black fang is not chaos. So your word @mfbrandi disturbs me a litlle bit, even if morale has an impact B) chaos has two meanings : 1) Oblivion 2) As David said, it is a form rune so chaos "is", so not oblivion. For example chaotic gods of corruption are not obliterating the world, they are corrupting it C) based on B, Oblivion is more a consequence, one among many -maybe the ultimate, maybe just one-, of tic activities D) some acts are seen chaotic by people but not always (ex: cannibalism) E) acting like/using chaos provides chaos taint, but not always (according to greg - first post of this thread) F) some secrets actions (not seen by anyone except the actor) summon chaos (ex: sun county, some village... I will not spoil) G) illuminates are not detected as chaotic (if they are) Of course they would being seens as chaotic for physical reasons...but it could be a wrong interpretation H) Storm bullers power sense of chaos is not reliable enough to prove chaos (from irl perspective) then I consider : there is a hierachy of "it is chaos so there is consequences" 1) world level: it is chaos because it destroys the world (Oblivion, corruption, ...) 2) community level: it is chaos because the community rules/beliefs/morale/ ... say it is chaos (ex cannibalism) 3) personal level: it is chaos because you believe it is chaos. Same that the level 2, except you did not convince (or have not yet conviced) anyone else it is chaos Then my personal conclusion: you acquire the chaos taint or you bring chaos curse * on you/your family/your clan/... because consciously (you know the rules) or inconsciously (you know the rules but don't keep them in mind) you feel guilty. If your feeling is strong enough, you get the taint (aka the % "according to Greg") or curse that may explain why Illuminates are / may be not detected: they don't feel guilty. So in a illuminated society, you are not evil guilty if you use chaos. You consider your society as morale. Now, let imagine I m right... Is Eurmal really "guilty" to have kill Grand father mor(t)al ? What if he detected this weakness in him (grand fater mortal and all his heirs are able to "create" chaos involuntary) Maybe he tried to "obliterate" this power/curse, but partially succeed (they "just die" but they reproduce themselves) * become an ogre (or/and your heirs), "welcome" a succube, etc..
