Famously defeated the Australian army in the Emu War, as well.

”If we had a military division with the bullet-carrying capacity of these birds it would face any army in the world ... They can face machine guns with the invulnerability of tanks. They are like Zulus whom even dum-dum bullets could not stop”

Actually Emus taste like a combination of turkey and wagyu beef, in that the skin is really loose and fatty but the meat is lean and kind of red.  I ate it in the Northern Territory at a specialist Koorie restaurant.  Ostrich has the taste of turkey but is a lot stringier and tougher imo (I ate it in Africa).

As to riding an emu, well, while they are a large bird, they are plenty smaller than an ostrich, and while they are a bit aggressive, they are nothing on a Cassowary.  Cassowaries are the Stormbulls of Avians.  Have a watch of this (only 1.5min):

Cassowaries aren't good pets (unless you hate children, and have self destructive tendencies)

I strongly suspect that the Rinliddi Bird Empire was destroyed when they tried to domesticate cassowaries.

The Papuans have a cunning trick for capturing and keeping cassowaries.  They stalk them and come at them from behind, bundling them into a sack so that their heads and their legs are sticking out, then they tie them together, often transferring them to a similar position between 2 solid pieces of bark.  From this position the bird can't get leverage to kick or use their full peck.  They can still peck, but sensible people keep themselves away from the "business end".  For the record I have never eaten cassowary, but they have tried to eat me when I was a kid.  I would totally eat one given the chance though.

I've had ostrich steak, burgers and sausages - all pretty good. never tried Emu though I'd quite happily do so.

cassowaries do seem like  a bird to avoid, those claws look pretty vicious.

Is there an Emu tribe ?

I can see Roddull, a Lunar HeroQuestor, going into the God Time to bring back a ri8val to the Ostrich Tribe, as a Lunar equivalent, in the same way that the Sables are Lunar-loving Praxians.

Obviously, as Roddull is as mad as a hatter, things might go slightly differently than expected.

In my Prax, the braves of the Bolo-Lizard people sometimes heroquest for "upgraded" mounts... including something like a Utahraptor.

YGMV, mine certainly does!

I like it! Some little person throwing bolos from a velociraptor and screaming a war cry like a toddler denied their ice cream is just plain hysterical !

Not so much "toddler"-esque... Tyrion Lannister isn't too childlike.

But AIUA the Bolo & Ostrich tribes are more like "pygmy" peoples than people with dwarfism (n.b. pygmies are also not toddlers... nor much like them).

Like you, I love Peter Dinklage and the Tyrion character. And I love that he's getting work outside of GoT. He did a good job with Cyrano. I should also point out that Warwick Davis is back with 'Willow 2'. And I'm also very aware that we haven't come all that far from Billy Barty and the Oompa Loompas.

But the old RQ2 trope of 'You just got your ass beat by the Feral Child from Mad Max' or the Lost Boys from Peter Pan is still very much part of the 'head canon' of old RQ2 geezers like us, and that's what I was commenting on.

I heard that Emus live in Hell as “hell Ostriches” just as the Black Horses are hell horses. Unlike earthly emus “Hell Ostriches” can fly for short distances, and are pack hunters, delighting in the flesh of ducks. Then again the person who told me this on the road may have been a trickster as when I stopped for the night I found all my supplies rearranged in the most unhelpful manner with several important but inexpensive objects missing…
