Narl
Just how dead is the Crimson Bat in 1625? Would it be a surprise if it returned? Or is it pretty much expected to return? I'm reading all the RQG stuff and was curious. Thanks! Quote 129/
JonL
If memory serves, slaying the Crimson Bat banishes it to the Red Moon to recuperate. It can eventually be re-summoned to the face of Glorantha through a bog-ol expensive ritual.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe the Official And Canonical answer is "YGMV." 1 Quote C'es ne pas un .sig
metcalph
The Crimson Bat appears at the Battle of Dantolfol which is 1646 ST. So it returns.

Or did you omit "was" and "by" on either side of the "killed"? Or are you a Crimson Bat cultist? womble
There are accounts of the Crimson Bat being back in time to bear Jar-Eel into battle during the time she proves her full power in the first year of the 8th Wane, IIRC (Sourcebook, p189). How true that is for non-Lunar readers, I leave for others to judge.

Or is it pretty much expected to return? Glorantha Sourcebook p.189 as noted: In 8/1 (1626), Dranz Goloi suffered his first reversal when the Lunar Army, led by Jar-eel, riding atop the Crimson Bat, routed him outside the walls of Blessed Torang, and revealed herself to be the incarnation of the Red Goddess in the Third Battle of Chaos. So, in 1625, dead. In 1626, very much alive and back. This is Jar-eel's apotheosis as the incarnation of the Red Goddess, and just as the Red Goddess returned riding atop the Bat, Jar-eel will too. Now, most likely it will be awhile before the Bat returns south, so perhaps it is just rumors in Dragon Pass, or bad visions, or evil omens for the time being. If you're in Oraya and the Redlands, you will know the Bat is back.
jeffjerwin
BTW, the Bat has to be retrieved from the Underworld each time it dies - a hero quest - not from the Moon, which is were it is 'stabled'. Though perhaps it emerges from the underworld on the moon... however - as in the First Battle of Chaos - here we find it alighting on the Surface at Torang. Since the First Battle of Chaos was also at Torang, the use of the term Third Battle of Chaos may indicate some Lunar propagandizing. Not that the defeat of 'Dranz Goloi' isn't significant, but the First Battle had even more existential stakes for the Empire. Edit: also the Bat is pretty much around during the Dragon Pass/White Bear Red Moon boardgame period (c.1625-1634+) Edited October 30, 2018 by jeffjerwin
Joerg
This almost suggests that resurrecting the Bat wherever you need a Battle of Chaos might be the fast way of getting that chiroptera where it was needed. Less opportunities for terrorizing subdued rebels, but quite efficient as a way to take over a battlefield. Will Jar-eel's appearance on the Bat cause another swarm of raving madmen to be sent into Tork or Dorastor or the like? The boardgame battalia aren't the most trustworthy source, since they have Harrek, Jar-eel, the Red Emperor and sundry in every full scenario. 1 Quote Telling how it is excessive verbis
