tenchi2a
Is there a list of the old location/county name changes? The book states that they change them from the current names to the more historical names.
Morien
Which book? ESTATE, WARLORD and UTHER use the 'descriptive' names, basically just writing out in modern English what the name of the place means, or coming up with a descriptive name for the castle. They have lists of placenames in the appendix to try and match them back to the modern names. Note though that other than the Roman names (Corinium instead of Cirencester), they are not particularly historical, they are still based on the Anglo-Saxon names, simply written out in modern English. Which leads to some clunky names at times, like, IIRC, The Bridge on River Cam for Cambridge. However, Greg decided that going forward, the city/castle names would revert back to 5th edition & GPC names, with the exception of county names that would stay the same. That is why SIRES is using 'London' instead of 'Londinium', but has 'Huntland' instead of 'Huntington', and so forth. I think Roberto collected a list of all the placenames in the above three books and posted them on the old forum. Do you still have it, Roberto? @mandrill_one Edited July 7, 2019 by Morien
tenchi2a
The reason I ask is, I will be starting a new Pendragon campaign and using some of the books that are 5th compatible but still using old/new names. Using the following books: Pendragon 5.2, Book of Sires, Book of Knights & Ladies, Book of the Entourage, Book of the Estate or Book of the Manor (haven't decided which yet), Book of Armies, Book of Battles 2nd, Book of Warlords, Book of Feast, Book of Uther For example, one of my player rolled his homeland in berroc, but there are no references to that location in older books, I assume its Surrey in the Book of Knights & Ladies, but not sure. Atgxtg
Yes it's Surrey. Basically what seems to have happened was that Greg decided to get rid of all the Saxon influenced place names and titles (so the Earl of Salisbury became a Count), but this didn't go over well, as most modern names are or at least associated with the ones used in KJAP 5 and before. Espcially since many of the descriptive names are hard to place outside of Pendragon. People can figure out where Sarum or Malborough are, but probably can't find the Rock or Sparrohawk castle without looking it up in one of the game indexes. There was a compiled list of place names of the old nocturnal site, which linked the new place names to the old. . I might have saved it on the hard drive somewhere. If I can find it I could repost it here. Quote Chaos stalks my world, but she's a big girl and can take of herself.

Greg Stafford 04-06-2016, 06:00 PM Why the reversal? Because I had a lot of complaints and then I held a poll and the modern names won L***** 04-11-2016, 04:35 PM I really got confused (especially AFTER I printed all my pdfs...). QUESTION: If I have all the pdfs which I bought from drivethroughrpg....will I ever get updated versions with the FINAL and definitive names? I am especially concerned about all the new books with incredibly lonks lists (Uther, Warlord, etc.) and also the GPC...which, at this point, I do not know if it holds or not the right names. I am lost.... Greg Stafford 04-12-2016, 06:26 AM Yes, you will get updated PDF--Nocturnal is extremely good in this respect However, it will take some time to do this The final and definitive names are the modern names GPC needs no correction--it was done years ago before the fantasy of names swept me off my feet M***** 04-12-2016, 07:15 AM GPC needs no correction--it was done years ago before the fantasy of names swept me off my feet With the exception of a couple of county & city names: Devon = Ascalon Marlborough = Gentian Somerset = Summerland Surrey = Berroc The Eight Civitates of Logres (using now Latin names, except for Silchester): London = Londinium (Thamesmouth) Gloucester = Glevum (Glevum) Norwich = Venta (Caerwent) Silchester = Silchester (Silchester) Dorchester = Durnovaria (Dorsette) Cirencester = Corinium (Clarence) Colchester = Camulodunum (Caercolun) Chichester = Noviomagus (Hantonne) L***** 04-12-2016, 10:21 AM Yes, you will get updated PDF--Nocturnal is extremely good in this respect However, it will take some time to do this The final and definitive names are the modern names GPC needs no correction--it was done years ago before the fantasy of names swept me off my feet Greg, I must confess that I appreciated many of those new names, especially with all your efforts on "de-saxonizing" them. But I guess the problem came when one tried to cope information between old and new books and with Arthurian sources external from the rpg. Without considering people like me who do not know UK enough to be sure even about modern names ... By the way, you have been great to change the names once, and now you are great in listening people and revert the change. Thanks a lot. Now I need an atlas to understand where is everything.... M***** 04-12-2016, 12:57 PM Now I need an atlas to understand where is everything.... Well, at least if you look at the beginning of this thread, you will have a lot of the place names and their modern names gathered here. So you can do a Find on your web browser to search for the fictionalized name, find out the modern name, and then stick it into Google maps. Of course, if it is just an overview you are looking for, then the maps of BoU and BotW will work just fine for that, too. The names are changed back to modern/historical (in most cases) but the locations are not changed. Greg Stafford 04-12-2016, 05:09 PM By the way, you have been great to change the names once, and now you are great in listening people and revert the change. Thanks a lot. [/quote] Thank you. It has actually been an ordeal for me. Now I need an atlas to understand where is everything.... Although with the KAP names you needed an atlas and the book of translations Greg Stafford 04-13-2016, 12:24 AM I am making my huge tome of names that won't be used available as a downloadable file, I mean, two files, on my website StaffordCodex.com s***** 07-07-2016, 06:18 PM I'll miss the names. Its been very helpful to my players (even the ones who know where all the places are) to use non-Saxon names for things. Its hard to get into the proper mindframe to crush Saxons sometimes when you are using their names for things you are claiming to own. Greg Stafford 07-08-2016, 12:33 AM Yes, I understand I will miss them too I plan to sneak a few back in as Arthur's reign goes on For instance, after the Battle of Stafford the castle is named Castle Terrabal after the battle But I have to say that is quite a bit easier to find places when their modern name is used. Looking in the appendix then searching maps proved quite tiring for me, especially as several places seem to have missed when the new names were listed Still, places that are named in the literature will keep their literary names So will the counties of Britain remain the ones that are not modern, but made up for the game Finally, you can find the names for most of the places in the Pendragon Atlas files at my web site, Staffordcodex.com I will be moving it to GSPendragon.com, the official KAP web site, at some point It is a formidable work Furthermore, I think that some places not in the web site are covered in the published BoE and BoW
jeffjerwin
The other awkwardness of using 'translated' names is that Malory and the French sources he used freely use versions of the modern place names, so not only do we have to translate them into the KAP versions when we're using a history book or modern geography, but you also have to translate them when using the source material. mandrill_one
Hi there! Basically, Scotty has just posted the two files that I had posted on the old Nocturnal forums (Book of the Warlord and Book of Uther name conversion lists). Combined with the other two lists (which include the Book of Estate and another list, don't know form which book), they should cover most names needed. It should be trivial to combine them in a sigle list/file, I can do it if there is interest. I fear that producing the reverse list, from modern to descriptive names (is it needed?), will be more difficult and error-prone, but I can try this too. At home, I should still have an old file of the Pendragon Atlas with two big name lists, one for the descriptive --> modern conversion, another for the reverse modern --> descriptive conversion. IIRC, Greg gave it to me for completion but I probably never got around to really finish the task, due to the general reverting to previous names (thus the task became basically useless). Again IIRC, it contains a lot more than simple name lists. So, if I find the file(s), I'll send it privately to Scotty, who will then decide if Chaosium wants to post it here, or to post just any name lists included there, or to use it in any other way. Best, Roberto
Luca Cherstich
Old names, new names, old names again... We really needs a Pendrgon Atlas with Gazetteer and maps....especially for those of us who are not very expert with British local geography!!

If some kind person would like to collate this into a single document with references where needed and send it to me I will post it here. Yes! That's it. I'd like to collate into a single document but not sure when I'll get the chance as I am working 6 days this week and have a family get together on the seventh, plus need to get my next Pendragon adventure (441) written. Plus I need a haircut. Well, maybe I can sneak in it sometime. Edited July 8, 2019 by Atgxtg Quote Chaos stalks my world, but she's a big girl and can take of herself. albinoboo
I'm rather surprised that Bath isn't Aquae Sulis when settlements of similar size have their Latin names. Bath is the Saxon name and was originally know in the Saxon period as Bathchester.

kilgs
First of all, don't put your foot in this... much griping and hair-pulling over this issue. Second, there is a Master Naming List (Excel sheet) but it would be up to Larkins to clear release. Here's the place name list from Book of Uther which should have my corrections from BoW. I would check it but... I spent a gazillion hours doing that once already 😉 ...And no, no one ever even thought about converting French names. That would have resulted in homicide. Yes, Greg wanted it changed to Berroc. In the really old texts it was Thamesmouth, then Surrey, then Berroc. As long as you and your players decide on which naming method you are using, then you're fine. Any texts/source material you use however, will need to be checked.
