  1. Those covers were quite bad weren't they ? Ironically some of the contents were quite good, The last days of byzantium was ok and I've heard the Greenlanders one was good. this seems appropriate...... http://www.llbbl.com/data/RPG-motivational/target66.html
  2. Indeed yes, I have them. I'm saying there's a huge variety of monsters out there that could be adapted for Classic Fantasy...think of the possibilities !
  3. Well, you've got 86 monsters on your list. Now Monster Manual had about what....450 odd monsters ? Then of course you've got all of MM2 and the underwhelming Fiend Folio plus the monsters from individual modules.... Now, once upon a time Chaosium had their own equivalent called All the world's monsters Vol I, II and III so there's a potential gold mine there as well. No pressure...
  4. Maybe that could be a project, a comprehensive ' Guns of the old west ' PDF ?
  5. Not saying you shouldn't call them Deep Ones. It's just I've always thought of Sahuagin as being different from Deep Ones, there's that whole 4 arm thing going on with the Sahuagin for a start, and it goes without saying that there's much less squamous batrachian rugosity as well Also for me they conjure up two very different genres as well. Deep ones are lovecraftian horror, but Sahuagin are old school fantasy.... always liked 'em as a monster. If you're going to call them Deep Ones then why bother to stat them up, you could just nick the Deep One stats from CoC. But if you have Cthulhu in your game...why not have both sahuagin and Deep Ones. maybe they're related, or better still maybe they're bitter enemies. two brutal races locked in eternal undersea warfare. Deep Ones and kraken vs Sahuagin and Sharks.... Damn ,but there's an epic movie in there somewhere, somebody fetch me a Hollywood script writer.
  6. Because Deep Ones exist within Call of Cthulhu which is already a BRP game in publication...and don't exist in D'n'D which Classic fantasy is an emulation of. Sahuagin on t'other hand do exist within that game. So unless there is a copyright issue Sahuagin it is.
  7. You can never have too many monsters. I'm curious how did you decide which ones were ok to use without name changes and which ones needed a name change for...whatever reason
  8. Sounds convincing enough to me As an aside how many monsters are you looking at for Vol 2 ?
  9. Looks like the other BRP weird west setting will be out in autumn...... http://www.chaosium.com/article.php?story_id=471
  10. Got a question about a spell. On page 145 'Speak to plants and animals' has range 100 metres, but the text says: " This spell allows the druid to understand, and be understood by, one natural animal or plant within 3 metres" . So....is the range 100 metres or 3 metres ?
  11. Interesting.....are you sure about the Colt 1860 being .38 though ? I always thought it was .44 calibre.
  12. I don't think so, the one mentioned above is designed for CoC dark ages ( I bought a copy out of curiousity ) It's mostly one very long scenario. That said there's a big section on the nordic/viking view of magic, the spirit world, shamanry and a good few spells that could easily be adapted for non Coc BRP. It' falls into the nice to have but not essential category imo.
  13. On a serious note, what are we talking about here ? straight historical ? , mythological elements ? full on ghosties ghoulies and long leggity beasties ?
  14. and of course it leaves plenty of room for bad puns like: " can anybody think of any uther names for the supplement ? "
  15. I guess it's about willing suspension of disbelief. It's easier to believe in overt use of magic in an ancients setting than in a modern one. I personally believe that Feng Shui is Chinese for: " move that pot plant one inch, now give me all your money gullible foreign devil "
  16. Voodoo would be what I would call hidden history. On the surface it's a rational 21st century world, but behind the scenes..... In ancient Greece with it's gods, Minotaurs, Stymphalian birds etc you can get away with having magic as part of the everyday fabric of the game.
  17. Is the food that good....after all what were the attendees struck down with ?
  18. I'm a big fan of historical stuff ( after all I set up the poll mentioned in this thread ) personally I like the whole sourcebook approach. As for magic in historical settings I think you have to give people the option. That said I think certain settings lend themselves to the notion of magic use much more easily than others. For example an ancient Greek, homeric style campaign is likely to be chock full of feuding deities, strange beasties, mysterious heroes etc etc. Within that context it'd be perfectly reasonable to include magic as part of the fabric of the setting. You could allow priests to use the Divine Magic system in Basic Magic, possibly in the case of Pan and such like deities Spirit Magic, the magicians of the far east and Egypt might have sorcery ( either kind ) so on and so forth. By it's very nature the setting partakes of the supernatural and the fantastical so magic would fit in nicely On the other hand a game based around WW2 special forces wouldn't have any need for such like shenanigans ( I can see it now: BRP goes commando ) Basically the further back in history you go the easier it is justify magic. Rationality and science start to bleed away and myth becomes steadily more influential. Of course you can take the whole secret history approach where magic lurks in the background.
  19. Poor sporting technique.....but a perfectly valid combat technique. if he'd of been a knifeman who'd be talking to us today ?
  20. Sounds good, and remember you can never have too many monsters
  21. The market share is I suppose those people that don't want to play in Glorantha, or prefer the Chaosium flavour of BRP to the Mongoose one.
  22. You're welcome, I really liked The Green, for me it had one of the qualities that marks out a good RPG supplement, namely: it told you everything you needed to run a game....but left you wanting to know more. I'm in the process of writing a review, but it'll be a couple of weeks before it's up as I'm really busy at the moment with other stuff. But fear not, 90% of what I'm gonna say is compliments.
  23. Yeah, but what if horror RPGing isn't your cup of tea ? If you think of RPG's in general fantasy and SF tend to be the big players. That said there are a couple of settings coming up. Shaira's Chronicles of Future Earth sounds very promising to my mind ( as long it's supported, last thing we want is the typical chaosium situation: product released.....4 years later after everybody has lost interest next supplement straggles out......Dorastor I'm looking at you here ) Also Rod's default setting for Classic Fantasy is to be detailed in Vol 2 of that worthy tome, if that takes off maybe we will see more material for that Finally I think The Green is a really good setting, I'd love to see it given the full distribution deal, professional artwork, expanded contents. Reading through it there's easily another volume or two's worth of ideas there.
