  1. We will start taking pre-orders on Chaosium.com shortly. All proofs for the Guide have been approved, and printing is underway.
  2. Come one, come all. Please submit Plunder items on this thread. The best may very well end up in a future publication. Please try to follow the standard format of categories and information provided in Plunder: Name Description: Cults: Knowledge: History: Procedure: Powers: Value:
  3. Also, all those lovely pages of Treasure Tables will return in the RQ Classic version of Plunder, which is almost done. I didn't include them in the Borderlands & Beyond book because I was lazy, I guess.
  4. Wow. I am happy and a bit embarrassed to find out that the Spirit Chain Plunder item was omitted from the Borderlands & Beyond Gloranthan Classic. Oddly, I do not remember anyone ever pointing this out to me before. Regardless, I am happy to provide it here, and will also make sure it is included in the Borderlands RQ Classic reprint due out in a few months. Spirit Chain Description A gemstone looking something like a Power storage crystal, but not as brilliant. Cults Associated – Daka Fal, Kyger Litor, Thed. Knowledge Little Known. History These are thought to have the same origin as do Power storage crystals. They are activated by an unknown ritual. Its powers are unknown to virtually everyone but a few Lhankor Mhy sages, but if known, almost anyone would kill to obtain one. Procedure The procedure for creating a Spirit Chain has been lost. Powers When crushed, this stone will freeze all spirits within 40 meters to their place for 12 hours. If the spirit is moved out of the radius, the effect will continue on it for the full time period. Ghosts cannot move to attack, and spirits cannot leave the bodies they inhabit. Even a slain person’s spirit will stay with the body, though it will no longer animate it, and this effect will prolong the period before the spirit begins to lose knowledge of its spells and abilities by 12 hours. The use of Sever Spirit will counteract the effect of this item on any one spirit within the radius. The item can only be used once, then it becomes a simple gem, even if Repair is used on it. Value 1D100 Lunars as a gem. If its properties are known, it may be worth up to 10,000 Lunars.
  5. The 2nd Edition of Dark Ages is going to take longer to rework than first envisaged. We don't have an ETA yet, but it won't be in 2016.
  6. While a number of creatures produced by Archive minis were "made Gloranthan", like the Bugbear becoming the Gloranthan Jack O'Bear, ducks are not one of those creatures. Ducks were added to Glorantha for a few reasons, but mostly because Greg Stafford enjoyed reading Uncle Scrooge (McDuck) and Howard the Duck comics.
  7. Esdevium has been shipped a large number of the 7th edition core items: Keeper Rulebook, Investigator handbook, Keeper screen pack, Nameless Horrors, and the Petersen Guide. They should have it in their warehouse by now. We don't have any control over what Esdevium does next with the stock, just as we have no control over which games stores stock our books. Going forward, the core items should remain in stock for years to come. As for Amazon UK, they currently don't buy anything from us directly. I don't know if they buy from distributors like Esdevium. I realize I am very biased, but if you want to buy the 7th edition books online, buy them from Chaosium.com and they will be shipped to you from our UK warehouse, at UK shipping rates.
  8. I reviewed the final proofs yesterday, and approved them. Ordering will start on the Chaosium website once the books are on the boat, probably in about 3-6 weeks.
  9. Unfortunately, if you want to really compete on Game Store shelves you have to go with full color layout and hardcover format. Yes, the writing/content is most important, but art, editing, and layout all have an important part to play in the book appealing to the buying public. Which would you think you would be more likely to buy? The color book is $5 more. This is "Doors to Darkness". The written content is the same.
  10. As I said, POD is great for books with B&W internal pages. Depending on how you feel about paper quality and binding, they ARE often just as good as what a traditional print run would achieve. If I were starting out as a smaller publisher doing B&W internal page books I would almost surely go with a POD only approach. It saves so many hassles and almost all of the guesswork. I would create the books, put them on DTRPG and Lulu, and be done with it. They would sell ok. I could even sell to a few game stores that bought directly. Sorry, but POD isn't an option for game companies that want to go into regular distribution to game stores. It certainly isn't an option if you want to print color books on any kind of scale. Yes, printing color books by the thousands, shipping them to our warehouses, and paying for fulfillment is cheaper than selling color POD books. WAY better, as in not even close. You can't do color POD books for distributors because you can only charge distributors 40% of cover price, and you can't print a color POD book for 40% of cover price unless you charge more for the book than 95% of the market is willing to pay. Lastly, I don't know from which companies you purchase 80% of your books, but I am starting to suspect most of them are not published by WOTC, Paizo, Cubicle 7, Modiphius, Pelgrane, or Chaosium, and they also aren't in full color. I suspect they are mostly by smaller publishers (and awesome ones too).

  12. Lorcan: Different Chaosium titles are not on DTRPG for a variety of reasons, ranging from not having the time to place them there yet, to no longer having the rights to sell them. If there is a specific title you want to know about, please ask. We have over 100 titles on DTRPG and I do not have the history for every title (being there/not being there) memorized. It could be as simple as someone forgot to add it three years ago and nobody noticed. As for you not being keen to purchase directly from Chaosium, I understand and respect your reasons. However, I do want to reassure people that we have invested a lot in website data security for our new website, and take record keeping very seriously. The problems from pre-2014 are due to the previous management. The new Chaosium takes our website, its data, and its security very seriously. We are working very diligently on many fronts to re-earn and maintain our customer's trust.
  13. ZIT: You should visit our website at chaosium.com. All of our new titles are being released as e-pubs. All our fiction has been done that way for years. If the Guide wasn't in color, a lot of the art would be less vivid, and the maps would be much harder to read. Yes, we've thought about e-pub. Displaying a 10x12 full color book with hundreds of maps and illustrations on a small B&W screen doesn't work very well. The Guide is as much of a visual presentation of glorantha as it is the textual. ebooks are great for novels and similar.
  14. Greg Stafford, Sandy Petersen and I wrote a lot of Delecti and Upland Marsh related material in Tales 19. I haven't seen anything much written about Granny Keeneye beyond what was in Griffin Island.
  15. We can't do the Guide as POD because DTRPG doesn't do 10"x12" format. We would have to redo the entire 800 pages of layout. As for big-print-run type publishing being a dinosaur, I couldn't disagree more. Ask any RPG company that sells thousands of any printed product and they will tell you that big print run printing is the only way to even come close to making any real money on a book, especially if it has full color internal pages. Yes, you could sell thousands of a book as POD, but you would be depriving your company of a huge amount of revenue. Printing a softcover color book that is 128 pages would cost at least $25 POD. You can't sell that book competitively priced for more than about $35. Compare that to a conventional "dinosaur" print run of 1000 copies and it would cost less than $5 per copy. I am rounding off numbers as a quick example. POD takes away almost all of the risks, but it also basically removes all of the chance to make real money too. You may not feel it is necessary, but to compete with the big companies on store shelves you have to seriously consider doing books as full color. There are exceptions, but look at WOTC, Paizo, etc. Full color books. Chaosium, Pelgrane, Cubicle 7, and many other medium sized RPG companies (relative for the industry) do likewise. PS: We looked at getting color POD copies made from a place that could do single copies of a 10x12 book. It was $140 a copy. In general, 800 color pages printed even on 8.5x11 paper is not going to be cheap. You either print a book like the Guide 1000+ copies at a time, or the price is unbearable. We've held off reprinting it for a while because we weren't sure if there was significant demand, beyond a few dozen additional buyers. 2000 copies we thought pretty much sated the demand. Lastly, I feel the need to state that POD is awesome if you have a book of standard size with B&W internal pages. We do a number of titles like that via POD, and intend to offer MANY more. POD doesn't do so well for full color books, which may change in the future.

  20. DTRPG offers its POD service to publishers, but it is on a per title basis, so the publisher has to set it up. POD also requires more work by the game company, since we have to send "printer ready" files for the cover and internal pages separately. They also have to be formatted differently than what most large scale printing companies require. It's not a huge amount of work, but it adds up when you have to do this for each title in your catalog.
  21. We have every intention of using more "public domain" photos in forthcoming CoC publications, especially anything from the 1920s era.
  22. The GM screen is in the Keeper Screen Pack, which also has maps, scenarios, and character sheets. The 7th edition core books will go up for sale on Chaosium.com VERY soon. We are only waiting for final confirmation that our UK warehouse has the books on hand to immediately process orders.
  23. All remaining Backer-Kit pre-orders should have been processed by now, and in the mail as of Friday, August 19th. As for Amazon, the 7th edition books will probably not be available for a while. We haven't started selling it to Amazon yet.
