jeffjerwin
So the RQ:G book has moved us into the 1620s. Great! Of course some of us either want to fill in the gaps for an older character (the game assumes a birthdate around 1604) or play a story or even a prologue back in the classic era. I propose we hash one out together. A campaign set in c.1613, during Starbrow's Revolt, would require a birthdate c.1592... which means a parent born c.1565 and grandparent around c.1540. Let's get started... 2

Grievous
I did some similar sketching for events, and have pretty much the same list. A few other events to possibly note though: Around ~1573 - Orldaging Wars (I like these for a good representation of internal warfare inside the Sartarite kingdom) 1579 - Tarkalor recognized that the Yelmalio cult was legal possessor of the lands of the Amber Fields and Forthanland 1582 - The Lunar Tarshites try to destroy the Tarsh Exiles. Sartarites and Grazers are involved on the defense. Both King Tarkalor and his Queen were killed.
Grievous
Also, some variant events (more current) that are specific to the Red Cow and/or Cinsina: I'm myself planning on adding some Culbrea intrigue/politics into the early years in my campaign, so some Culbrea related events seem of utility, so I'm including those. Background for the feud with the Emerald Sword also feels like a very suitable source. 1603-16113: The Cinsina are ruled by by the pro-Lunar King Garralor, who sought to control the Jonstown Confederation at the expense of the Culbrea. That could be the source of something. He also re-instituted the Council of Grey Sages. 1607: The Wolf Hunt 1611-1612: Findar Longsword of the Two-Pine/Culbrea renews the Seven Tributes and exacts a heavy price from the Red Cow. Many in the clan were angry at that, and Farandar Orendalsson challenged Valenstor Moor-Leaper for the chieftaincy in 1612, but lost. 1613: After Starbrow's Revolt, Valenstor Moor-Leaper of the Red Cow is removed as chief to avoid punishment from the Empire. Broddi becomes the new chieftain. Maybe one of your parents could be among his supporters, perhaps exiled. 1614: Broddi stopped paying the Red Cow Tribute, and encouraged the Blueberry, Goodhaven and Greenhaft clans not to pay tribute either. Not sure if this translates to specific events, but seems quite notable regardless, especially as regards to the Cinsina relations to the Culbrea. 1615: Tormakt's Farm Massacre, which starts a feud with the Emerald Sword. Chief Broddi negotiates compensation, but Kangharl Black-Brow refuses the blood money for his dead wife, wanting only revenge. Broddi negotiated peace with the Emerald Sword, but the feuding continues a few years later. This is great background for the campaign and could easily slot into a character's history. 1617: Kangharl Black-Brow led a cattle raid against the Emerald Sword. Broddi can't settle the matter. The Emerald Sword champion, Rostakus Twice-Outlawed, tried to settle the feud in a duel at Dangerford; he killed the Red Cow champion Jordarn the Clash. Far from ending the feud this killing further enraged the Red Cow clan. This is very recent history for a Red Cow/Coming Storm/Eleven Lights campaign, of course. Unfortunately I just have these rough notes for stuff to base events on, but I figured they might be useful regardless. jeffjerwin
Thanks, Grievous. Starting with Arkilia's tragedy... 1546: Sarotar is killed by Arkilia's lovers and she is kidnapped in Esrolia. Participating Homelands: Sartar and Esrolia. (Esrolia +5) D20 Event 1-10 Your ancestor was not present at the kidnapping 11-17 Your ancestor knew Arkilia and/or Sarotar. Gain Speak (Other Language) +5% for the other culture. 18-20 Your ancestor was present at the kidnapping The Kidnapping of Arkilia D20 Result 1-10 Survived. 11-20 Your ancestor was slain in the fighting. Gain Hate (Esrolian) and Loyalty (Sartar) if Sartarite, or Loyalty (Esrolia) and +5% Intrigue if Esrolian, and +1d3% Reputation for both. Note that I'm using 'ancestor' rather than specifying a particular degree of relationship. If the ancestor died here, she or he is presumably a great-grandparent. Joerg
Since I have made the death of Sarotar part of the "prequel" to my scenario Norinevra's homecoming, here are my thoughts about that period. 1539: Dragonewts' Dream I'd start with the grandparent's clan reaction to the dragonewt activity, then offer a chance to participate in the Opening of the Big Rubble. The first explorers of the Rubble will be able to bring back a heirloom or two. They might end up in the retinue of Sarotar. 1543: Sarotar's wooing of Arkilia, culminating with his death in 1546 In addition to gaining Esrolian as a language, getting an allegiance or a feud with one of the Esrolian houses is on the table. 1546-1555 or so: the assassination war with Nochet The brothers and cousins of Sarotar wage their campaign of revenge on the Queen, then Reverend Grandmother, of Nochet and her clan. 1548 (IMO): Tarkalor begins his war against the Kitori, Monrogh begins unifying the Old Sartar Elmali into what becomes Sun Dome County. IMO Tarkalor and his companions join the Night Jumper society of the Curtali clan. The Nightjumping magic may become instrumental in the Esrolian assassinations. 1550: Dwarf revenge, Saronil dies rescuing Minara. Possibly ties to Onelisin and her daughters. 1550: Dorasar sets off to start New Pavis. The construction of New Pavis with its Sartarite wall starts, but would last a few years unless Dorasar uses Flintnail dwarf magic. If so, the wall should be finished before Saronil dies. More chances for Big Rubble plunder/perishing. 1555: Jarolar's arrival gives Palashee a crushing victory over King Philigos, who died in the battle. Fame etc. to be had. Regardless of that, Palashee dies in a subsequent skirmish and duel with Phargentes. The Founding of Sun Dome County probably takes place well before 1569, but The Kitori War ends with the liberation of Whitewall to the Volsaxi, which may have come significantly after the liberation of Vanntar and relocation of the Elmali there. 1548 is a good date for that if you go for 1550 rather than 1575 for the founding of New Pavis. The enslaving of the Ergeshi and Monrogh becoming Count may both be tied to the capture of Whitewall from the Kitori. This may play out in Jarosar's reign. 1569 marks the year of Tarkalor ratifying the position and officially giving Monrogh independence from Sartar (which never had sovereignty over Vanntar anyway). Tarkalor's wooing of the FHQ is another longer build-up, with several possible events for people in Tarkalor's retinue, and also for people in Phargentes' retinue. On the Tarshite side, the wars of Phargentes also include slaying kings of Aggar and Elkoi, and even prior to the death of Philigos, there will have been activities of Phargentes as the first Provincial Overseer in Holay, and possibly some tie-ins to the Tarshite holdings in Sylila. Chances to gain connections to either the Tarsh royal house or to the Orindori family which is going to produce Fazzur. 1555 marks the loss of Philigos against Palashee and Jarolar, the victory of Phargentes over Palashee, and the re-dedication of the Reaching Moon Temple. The conquest of Sikithi Vale from the Grazers follows, IMO, not sure about the year. Furthest razed and rebuilt as Lunar city. After Phargentes' death as a result of his overextending himself wooing the FHQ, we get the reign of Moirades with the establishment of the Provincial university, influx of Lunars to Furthest. Reign of Terasarin: 1582: Liberation of the Far Place in the aftermath of Grizzly Peak. Founding of Alone. Last royal road-building/wall building campaigns. 1590: Terasarin fends off a major Lunar invasion. 1600: Moirades projects "a stray moonbeam" to blind/slay Terasarin. Opportunities for Tarshite background, too. Difficult ascension of Salinarg, formation of Household of Death by his children. (No parents or grandparents can join, but could be retainers.) 1 Quote Telling how it is excessive verbis

That way you don't necessarily have to be so specific in each event and can incorporate more of the Hate(Sartarite) vs. Hate(Esrolian) or even Hate(specific clan) items in the die rolls. jajagappa
I included a couple of these older events in my Tusk Rider background post. Specifically: Year 1591 Participating Homelands: Stinking Forest, Esrolia, Lunar Tarsh, Sartar Kingdom of Sartar invaded by Lunar Empire with its Tarshite and Tusk Rider allies. Belintar the God-King secretly supports the Kingdom against the Lunar invasion, and the invasion is defeated by Prince Terasarin. Note: for Esrolia, Lunar Tarsh, and Sartar characters optionally add the 1591 event. Year 1591 Events Modifiers Tusk Rider: -5 to D20 roll. Esrolia, Sartar, Lunar Tarsh: +5 to D20 roll. D20 Event 1–5 Raided other lands. Roll on Tusk Rider Raid table. 6-10 Sartar Invasion (below). 11-12 Died of other causes, see Random Causes of Death table (page 35). 13–20 A normal year. Sartar Invasion Modifiers Tusk Rider: -2 to D20 roll. D20 Result 1–4 Plundered the Far Place. Gain 1D6×100 L. 5–13 Survived. 14–18 Killed in battle. If Sartarite, gain Hate (Lunar Empire). Year 1609 Participating Homelands: Stinking Forest, Dagori Inkarth, Lunar Tarsh, Old Tarsh, Sartar Persistent raiding by the tusk riders rallied their foes, and many lands (Sartar, Tarsh, Trolls) sent their best hunters and warriors to hunt down the raiders. Success was, as usual, questionable. Note: for human characters from Dragon Pass optionally add the 1609 event. Year 1609 Events Modifiers Esrolia, Grazelands, Prax: –3 to D20 roll. Dagori Inkarth, Lunar Tarsh, Old Tarsh, Sartar: +2 to D20 roll. Stinking Forest: +10 to D20 roll. D20 Event 1–9 A normal year. 10–11 Died of other causes, see Random Causes of Death table (page 35). 12–15 A normal year. 16–20 Fought in the Boar Hunt (below). jeffjerwin
Wow! OK, on a roll... I will condense these suggestions into a new timeline tomorrow. We probably could do with more Grazer, Esrolian, and Tarshite events, though I suspect that Sartar will still be the most common choice for characters. jajagappa
7 hours ago, jeffjerwin said: Dragonewts' Dream Some useful ideas from the Pavis HQG book p.39-40: "In 1539, the unusual event called the Dragonewts’ Dream took place. At that time all of the living dragonewts of Dragon Pass crawled into their ancient cities, sealed and booby trapped them, and disappeared from view. Then, in numbers far greater than those of living Dragonewts, there appeared phantasmal images of Dragonewts, generally dressed in antique costume, going about a silent and mysterious ritual. In some cases, they caused other portions of their phantom reality to appear as well, such as the Pyramid of Caran, which has sporadically appeared ever since." Did the ancestor attempt to enter a sealed city to plunder it? Perhaps their soul/spirit was trapped and lost, and only the body returned to the clan. "It was possible to interfere with the ghostly creatures, but such attempts almost always led to severe retaliation by the apparitions. In those occasions where a ritual was entirely disrupted or destroyed by external forces, the Dragonewts always made at least one more try to perform it again.... Among other events forced by the Dragonewt’s Dream was the opening of Pavis. The magically-sealed doors hampered the easy passage of the Dragonewt ghosts, and when the defenses of the Wyvern Gate were breached by spectral Dragonewt magic, there was a terrible battle with the defensive spells and spirits, which destroyed the phantom Dragonewt procession. A second procession destroyed the gate’s remaining defenders, and the ghosts continued on to the ruins of the ancient Dragonewt temple, built there during the heyday of the Empire of the Wyrm’s Friends. The ruins were spiritually erected for the occasion, and the ghosts completed their ceremony. Two more processions appeared later and performed the same ritual, and for a final time, the ghosts marched around the perimeter of the ruins hissing a song which is still heard by people on occasion." Did the ancestor attempt to protect a sacred clan space which lay close to a dragonewt site? Perhaps physically or mentally scarred? Did the ancestor hear the song of the dragonewts and become enamored of it? Gain Love(dragonewt song)? Also some interesting stuff in Glorantha Sourcebook p.183: "These phantom dragonewts were utterly indifferent to their present surroundings, passing right through solid buildings and walls as if they were not there. Their presence often disrupted local religious or magical rites, but nothing could be done to interfere with their ghostly performances. The Red Emperor sent observers to witness the Dream, and learned that the objective of the dream was to repopulate Dara Happa with the dragonewts. He spent 6/23 preparing the Emperor’s Reply, a huge recounting of the Origins of the World that omitted the dragons from it. It was performed at Sacred Time, and as a result, the Dream stopped and no repopulation occurred. After making his reply, the Red Emperor substituted corn women for humans in the Hon-eel planting rites, to the shock and surprise of many old priestesshoods. When the protests continued, the Red Emperor released the Crimson Bat, until the Bat Feeders killed them all." Possible that Tarsh and the Hon-eel cult there is affected by the Emperor's Response. Could have that as an item for Lunar Tarsh specifically - e.g. If Lunar Tarsh, then go to the Emperor's Response. If the ancestor was bolstered by the Red Emperor's magic then gain Loyalty (Red Emperor). Or killed by the Crimson Bat in the aftermath (we know where that leads). Also did the dragonewts disrupt a ritual the ancestor participated in? If so, did that bring on a Random Cause of Death? Or did it result in the priests/priestesses getting killed and the ancestor became endowed with some magical aftereffect - maybe they took up the role of priest/priestess, changing their children's destinies; or maybe they gained an unusual Rune (+10% in Moon, or Dark, or Water, or Beast)? Or they went insane - confined to the Mishap House.
