  2. True. I've picked an extreme (yet genuine) case. But, you also took a one particular case: a succesful blow succesfully parried by a non-critical parry with a big enough parrying weapon. The perfect tie, so-to-say. If the attack goes through we have most of the times one or more special effects and many special effects require rolls (typically opposed rolls against original attack) and of course rolling the hit location and the damage. I'd say RQ6 makes makes combat more fun and interesting, but also adds a little bit of complexity on average. I wonder whether it can be streamlined further by making most (if not all) combat effect deterministic, i.e once gain an effect you choose the effect and apply it without further rolls. The RQ6 parry rules that you mention are indeed very elegant. You are right in pointing out the fiddly things you have to keep track of in RQ2 and RQ3. If I really have to nitpick, I'd say keeping track of points is not dice rolling. But I get your point. Nostalgia runs strong also in this 45 years old. I remember vividly the day I bought RQ2 at the Strategiochi shop in Milan. RQ3 box was already out but it costed a fortune. So, the shop owners pointed to the slender RQ2 booklet with the Louise Perenne cover in glorious color. I was immediately hooked. I remember the sense of wonder of reading about Glorantha, the Aldryami, the Trolls, the Tusk Riders (for some reason I liked a lot the tusk riders), bronze and iron weapons..
  3. Lion is size M in the chapter draft. Referring to the other thread... Lions do have pronounced sexual dimorphism. Actually male lions should be L and lionesses M (around 130 kg). By the way I would prefer size class to be numerical rather than a letter. Just for quick comparison. In RQ6 it is annoying to have to memorize how many size classes an Enormous weapon is bigger than a Large one.

  5. I do hope that the publication of the new Chaosium RuneQuest will be the occasion to slim and trim a bit the RQ6 engine. I know this is not what they said. They said it will be ***exactly*** RQ6. But they also said it will be a somewhat shorter book. A few days ago I was running a RQ6 combat and I realized that resolving one particular combat action required no less than 7 (!) dice rolls. 1 - Roll attack, 2- Roll parry (differential roll vs attack), 3-Roll hit location, 4-Roll damage, 5-Opposed roll required by the special effect, 6-Opposed roll required by the major wound, 7-Roll the number of actions that the wounded target cannot attack
  6. OK. That fixes the horse which is size class XXL, but not the lion which is just class M.
  7. What will you do with the RQ2 reprints? Just reading and reminiscing or will you play it? The book and, particularly, the screen are telling me to play... The problem as usual is time... And if you plan to use it in play what will you do plan to do exactly?
  8. Average STR of 14 for lions, horses or terror birds sound kind of wimpish if read in BRP terms. It's the score of a strong man. And I've never seen a strong man wrestle down a cape buffalo or pull a cart full of people for hours. I don't know about terror birds, but lions (especially male lions) are brutally strong, and well... horses are strong like horses... That said, also in BRP/ RQ some strenght scores for animals are often off. Many animals are pound for pound stronger than people. All big cats, for instance, are ridiculously strong for their size while they lack in stamina (low CON?). A male chimp is stronger than a burly man almost double its size.

  11. A Dennis Detwiller Dreamlands campaign pack. Do you have it? Run it? I am kind of a Dreamlands fan. I like HPL Dreamlands as a setting in their own right rather than a diversion in a regular CoC campaign. Should I get this one?   12. AND HERE TOO I'M SPOLING THE SPOILS OF THE CAMPAIGN... ***SPOILER **** Me too. The story of the two sisters and their father is great! And the Planar Knife is a very fitting demon object. The first time I run it I was so enthusiastic that I added all sort of Maria-lore which had the reverse effect of turning the NPC in a terrible GM's Mary Sue.
  13. I just love Maria Tres Pistolas! The Eternal Buxom Pirate Queen! And I love the Rogue Mistress campaign! I tried two times getting that campaign going but it did not go very far. First time I had created extensive prequels to replace the weak start, but once the players had played the prequels they were kind of tired ... second time I started straight but then real life hit hard!

  15. Got it! Great value or 2.99 dollars! I don't really "know" Spanish but being Italian I can read it and understand it well enough - it's just slower reading. It's strange but it works, as I learned when I was doing my thesis and tried to read Spanish books for the first time. I suppose we must thank the Romans for that!
  16. Baron, I don't think that the forums have become unfriendly. I was reading a lot these forums and posting quite a bit in the most heated moment when Chaosium were announcing their plans for BRP around Kraken and speculation was (understandably) rampant about certain points that were not immediately clear. I did see a few posts here (and cross-forum comments in other forums) that rubbed me the wrong way. I think I understand what you mean by "fanboys". But that was really minor. And largely understandable if put in context. As for the new management team at Chaosium, I have nothing but praise for the way Rick is communicating with us on these boards. That level of communication was simply unthinkable with the previous management. They also seem to have a clear vision of what they want to do. Cheers, Smiorgan
  17. Sorry I was not clear. I was referring to economic viability and its impact on Chaosium's overall ability to put out new titles in the long run, not just the layout working hours. I think that RQ2 reprint will generate a nice cash flow for Chaosium with less risk (e.g. we know people like RQ2!) and smaller costs (e.g. in principle, no budget for new art, no authors to pay). I imagine that reprints of minor titles - as opposed to RQ2 corebook - could be PDF+POD, eliminating the risk of a print run and storage costs. Having this additional cash flow should help the company and improve its ability to shoulder more risky projects with the creation and distribution of new titles which require more extensive design, playtesting, editing, art budget, author compensation, storage costs... and that gamers may or may not like.
  18. I own the original Questworld box. Having bought it relatively cheap years ago. It's full of interesting, curious, sometimes great, stuff - especially the scenarios - but it does not have the same level of quality/ consistency of the Gloranthan RQ2 releases of those years. It's a nice to have for those who don't own the original, but I'm not going to buy a second copy in this case. Two reprints would be higher in my list: 1) A collection of all the RQ2 solos in one big hardcover book. 2) A reprint of Worlds of Wonder. Hardcover would be fine. In general, I look forward to Chaosium reprinting old catalogue. I don't think it will detract from its ability to put out new titles.

  21. Good news! This is a momentous moment for Chaosium! I'm very very happy to hear that, even if I'm not a backer and it will probably take some time before I buy the CoC7 books (I'ts an impressive set of books, but currently RuneQuest old and new and BRP/Mythic Iceland have higher priority for me).
  22. In contrast, I will buy the reprint with the hope of actually playing some Pavis, Borderlands and (especially) Griffin Mountain games. I used to play Gloranthan Classics with RQ3 and (sort of) convert on the fly. Using my venerable copies of RQ2 was not appealing - too scared of them disintegrating! The idea of a brand new sturdy hardcover to play the original adventures is very appealing! I like RQ6 but it's sufficiently different (and complex) that it makes the prospect of conversion unattractive.
  23. Well, in lots of respects! They are entirely two separate d100 games. OpenQuest is born as a much simplified ruleset created out of Mongoose RuneQuest 1st edition (MRQ1) from 2006. RuneQuest Classic Edition is a reprint of the 1980 RuneQuest second edition by Chaosium (RQ2), with a few errata and additions. OpenQuest may have taken some "flavor" inspiration from RQ2 in the spell rules, but mechanically they are as different as two d100 games can be. RQ2 hit locations ---- OQ general hit points only RQ2 separate skills for weapons --- OQ generic combat skills RQ2 separate attack-parry skills --- OQ unified skill RQ2 substract defense score from attack roll-- OQ roll dodge skill RQ2 strike rank factoring in size and weapon type --- OQ DEX ranks RQ2 characteristic x5 rolls (not as generalized as in later BRP though) --- OQ resistances as skills RQ2 resistance table --- OQ opposed rolls with resistances as skill RQ2 parry based on weapon HP --- OQ parry based on weapon size categories RQ2 skill category modifiers based on characteristics --- OQ base skill chance based on sum of two characteristics RQ2 rune magic takes effect automatically -- OQ requires appropriate skill roll for divine magic RQ2 experience based on skill use -- OQ experience based on GM granting experience rolls when adventure objectives are met .... So, a lot!
