  1. I'm hoping to get a hardcopy of the new OQ rules when they go to general release. I've been looking forward to a simplified version of my favorite, RQ2, in an in-print version that players can purchase. And it may save me the trouble of working out simplifications here and there...
  2. Can't seem to access the group, shows as private with no way to request membership...
  3. I'm a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls, having played all but the two most recent (due to my antiquated computer). But Rod, thanks for dropping a little snippet of news about your 2nd edition! Looking forward to it.
  4. IMO, Chaosium should take advantage of the popularity of Call of Cthulhu, the "killer app," to bring players in. Then advertise BRP to them as, "Hey, you like this system? How about playing it for fantasy and science fiction? <insert product examples> AND we have this BGB toolset so you can emulate your favorite genre!"
  5. Agree with Atgxtg on all counts. Except the statement that PDF's are cheap. For an intangible, they are not cheap at all.
  6. In Star Wars d6 my daughter (now 10 yrs old) has played an ewok, and an R2 unit. She is often quite thoughtful in her actions. In her first rpg session (a few years back), a game of Fairy's Tale, she was extremely careful to come up with a non-violent solution to the scenario. I was a very proud dad.
  7. LOL! Too funny! In general, sounds like your life and mine have run in parallel... My daughter is very temperamental about whether she'll play an rpg, and which one. My wife no longer humors me at all; gaming is "not her thing." But I'd love to have a regular group again!
  8. Back in the 80's, our group was able to give most every new game a try, while still running ongoing campaigns in our favorites. Nowadays I can't even remain aware of all the new and niche games out there. 'Splintered' doesn't cover it by half. I feel like I'm standing in a blizzard. Regarding the internet, yes you can discuss games with people all over the world, which is nice. But it's not a replacement for local gamers. Our numbers have decreased, and it's not as easy to put a decent face-to-face group together anymore.
  9. I wouldn't pay $25 for a pdf. But then, if I'm going to use a book, I have to have hardcopy. I don't mind a free pdf version when I buy hardcopy, it's kind of neat, but I would never buy just a pdf. I find them awkward to use, and no replacement for an actual, physical book. And as far as the price of gaming rising, well, the price of lots of things has gone up. But it's the the whole supply vs demand thing. I won't pay more than something is worth to me (obviously). I'd like a Maserati, but I wouldn't pay that much for a car even if I could afford it; it just makes no sense to me to spend that much money on a car. Ditto with lots of products in my local supermarket. Price yourself out of my range, and I go find something else.
  10. I'd have to really want a game to pay $60 for the book. And I'd expect it to be hardcover for that price. But that's just me.
  11. My father, and grandfather, were both store-owners. And that's the way they handled stock, too. If it didn't sell in a few weeks, mark it down until it's all gone and clear the space for stuff that moves.
  12. Well, if it came with all the punch-outs and fiddly bits, I'd find room in my budget for it!
  13. Orient Express Kickstarter? They looking to re-do the set with the little punch-out railway cars?
  14. Interesting. Is that a house rule, or have you seen it in print somewhere?
  15. Where do we get to see these entries? My daughter needs roleplaying!
  16. I'd love to try it out, but my family is too demanding to allow me to game 'live' online! Could do a play-by-post, or play-by-email game, though. Or face-to-face if anyone's in Los Angeles!
  17. Looks interesting. Almost looks like a possible future for the Judges Guild Wilderlands.
  18. I think I might still have a d30... BTW, you had me going there for a minute!
  19. I don't have one to submit, but I'd be interested in seeing the submissions!
  20. Beautiful. Just checked, and I have the First Edition.
  21. Well. See what happens when I don't check for new messages? Here are some thoughts in no particular order. I'm glad to hear that Rod is taking matters into his own hands, to get his products out. I've enjoyed reading the book and hope to run a game soon. I prefer a stand-alone book, rather than a supplement. I approve Rod's comment that the base system he goes with should bend to match the first edition of CF. I haven't used any of the systems you've mentioned. However I'm a huge fan of Chaosium's RQ2, and of Call of Cthulhu. My leanings are towards stripped-down rules systems, rather than crunch. For the same reason I prefer a stand-alone book: I want to roll some dice and get on with the game, not get bogged down. So in fact I'm more in favor of stripping down my preferred system, RQ2, to something on a par with CoC. If it's a stand-alone book, does it really need to be associated with an existing system? BTW I applaud Vile for his SRD-thing, for emulating RQ2. I've played RQ2 since back in the earliest days, and consider it old-school by definition. That's the feel I enjoy, and I would think you could get some additional interest among we older gamers who are looking to relive the old days. I'm a hardcover guy, so I'd be looking for a printed book. From all the other comments I've read here, it sounds to me like if you're going to associate yourself with something, Openquest might be a good match for you. IAC, I wish you success and hope to follow developments. Thanks for everything, Rod.
  22. I might get my daughter involved, as we've done some pen&paper gaming. My wife doesn't even humor me anymore.
