  1. I love improvisation with good but terse supporting materials! (like recurring NPC or threads that slowly become apparent, but were there all along...) 🙂 Definitely looking to the investigation part! 🙂 In fact it will be my first GMing of a written investigative story. I hope it will help me improve GMing investigations! 😄 Many investigation I have played (as a player) tend to slog down and be boring, hopefully I can dodge that... Will throw them some bone or misdirection if needed... I'd like to use the CoC rule if possible, like combat seems simpler and wounding system seems interesting.. I guess I just have to read the chapter again! ^_^ (a 3rd time? I think...) yes, going to use pulp, seems like a very nice addition to CoC! alright.. I guess I really have to read those 270 pages... it's readable in 5 days... 🙂 (and maybe do a second read of first chapter)
  2. Well.... as far as I have heard: 1. MoN is quite long 2. MoN is quite entertaining That was my main criteria, length and fun... I don't mind killing the PCs don't worry (though I am not very good at it haha) ^_^
  3. Hi Guys, I love BRP and have read the golden book so many times.... Out of D100 enthusiasm I bought some CoC product (like the hardcover rulebook and Mask of Nyarlathothep) and read the core rule book a bit (just enough to know that CoC is slightly different with percent characteristic and no ho hit location as defaul, or maybe only, option) but that's about it... But now.. it just happen hat we decided last weekend that I was going to master the Mask of Nyarlaththep campaign starting next week.... ooops, I have to speed read it now! 😮 So any tip to help me transition from BRP to CoC? And other tip to GM Mask of Nyarlathothep? Also, to ramble on sanity, please feel free to enlighten me further... For starters, I am not into horror, I am going to GM this CoC adevnture as a fantastic story with interdimensional alien or something.... screw insanity! I am not going to make people go insane because they saw an unearthly angle or some impossible geometry.. And as also a Maths and Physics lover, I think extra dimensional experience are something to celebrate! However.. as I thought of various cause of insanity in BRP, the first time an investigator is pursued by a Mythos horror that can shrug bullet like rain droplet and go through crack in space time... there is good reason to panic right there... And in Mythos books, arguably the distant and occult perspective in those might make readers lose touch with ordinary mortal to such an extent that they might appear insane, though really they just have acquired a different perspective... We'll see.. maybe I'll use insanity after all.... But I think monster encounter should lead to PTSD and Mythos knowledge should lead so sociopathy... that's my 2 cent.... As for alien geometry of impossible angle, meh, bring it on I say!
  4. You know what? I should confess that, shame on me, I didn't even read the lore that I linked, so confident I was in my already acquired MoO lore from other sources... But it is quite good informative! And you also came with an excellent idea, which I haven't entertained so far, the "group powers" concept... this is an excellent idea I have to dwell on a bit more... 😮 🙂 Other than that, I later realized I already gave Elerian psionic powers, which are, arguably, a combat advantage, so I should not fear give the Trilarians something similar..
  5. I am tidying up my Master of Orion ruleset.. And I am thinking, let's add the other race I skipped.... Most race are more or less similar to human template with each a little something extra (arguably, human are the less special of the lot, I did give them 3 "advantage rolls" a session, but that is all) I am looking at that race: Trilarian - Official Master of Orion Wiki (fandom.com) In canon MoO lore, they do not have any particular bonus except for being Aquatic (which I think might be a problem to interact with other ground based species, and also a problem to master technology, which often start with fire, or even electricity) and "transdimensional" (their spaceship have faster warp and normal speed) In "BRP" term I am not sure how a race could improve its spaceship in ways that are unique and not reproduceable by other races (we are talking science and industry here, not magic!) but anyway... as a personal level, if they can speed up superluminal speed of their ship, I though it reasonable to give them natural teleport and levitation ability..... But that would be a big advantage in combat! However.. They have no combat bonus! So.. any other idea or comment, please?! 🙂
  6. Haha.. I am not stopping my day job! ^_^ In other news.. It went very slowly... but I think next week I can share the whole rule set for feedback! 🙂
  7. It's all true! Found one of their badge! 😮
  8. The benefit of rated speed was pretty evident! 🙂 If you want to keep track of distance travelled, of a MOV 166 vs MOV 154 this is quite tedious... so we simplify to both speed 13 (in virtual pseudo units), easier to manage! ^_^ BTW your additional suggestion (linear until 100, square root after is great!) Your bands suggestion from the James Bond looks pretty similar to what appear in the Vehicle Chase section of the golden book (page 216), me think... or did I miss something? I was thinking to do like they suggest except... except changing the "Vehicle Range Track" at the bottom a bit (i.e. range 1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-10, 11+)
  9. It looks like you might be interested in this D100 system! [Dragonsbane Entertainment] Announcing the Sabre RPG System - Alastor's Skull Inn - BRP Central - The Chaosium forums (basicroleplaying.org) It's quite different from BRP.... But it has some potential to seduce BRP users I'd say...
  10. Thanks for your comments! 🙂 Also, 2 days ago, I read the vehicle chase rules a great number of times in a row... and it turns out they do exactly what I was thinking for! 😮 with a few tweaks / simplifications! 😄 Anyway I like your comment about the square root, their rated speed, while a convenient simplification, left me slightly confused... And the successes giving +/-1 to ACC. Great idea! Additionally, the foot chase rule are a bit too vague, but I came up with a nice system of my own: It's also about simply comparing the distance between protagonist. Maybe if the distance is big enough, the guy running away can hide, or the pursuer can take the wrong path. Also, obviously, they might be obstacle along the way that just dead stop the pursuer or the evader, like a wall to climb or a river to swim... But if it was just a pure running chase: - each protagonist decide a gait move at x1 (walk), x2 (jog, cost 1 FP), x3 (run cost 2 FP), or x4 (sprint cost 4 FP) (for human, horse would be x1, x2, x4, x8) - a successful Run skill% check give a +1 multiplier. and an Endurance check give -2FP cost. (-2 for human that are endurance hunter, other animal have -1FP) and I guess , for simplicity, you just need to track the distance in multiple of 10 / base MOV! 🙂 or "squares" Haven't tested it.. it's a marathon to run after someone.. but the numbers to juggle are small...
  11. I had this game, I played it a couple of times, quite like it.. 🙂 Can't find anymore! 😮
  12. Alright, lets put it an other way. Even if someone has only 40% with spear, it does not ring true that they will simply "just miss" (60% of the time), it feels like the enemy defense is what make the attack fails. And D20+Attack Scor vs Defense Score + 10 or D20 feels right here.... But granted what I think they do in CoC7 (read the combat rules only once, basically opposed skill rule, highest rule win in case of same degrees of success) seems mathematically equivalent but, perhaps for lack of practice, doesn't feel the same when I read it... In fact I kinda tested it, I had a fantasy game early last year where highest roll got a tie breaker advantage, (RevolutionD100 rules) and this didn't feel right to me.. although I didn't ask my players their feeling on that particular point, maybe it was just me! ^_^
  13. With BRP skill increase is more granular. But having 50% in a skill and missing half of the time seems stupid some times... (hence more easy roll, i.e. skill% x2) should be used! With D20 I like how you can +1 here and +1 there and roll each skill against each other in more meaningful fashion.... However every time I considered converting skill to a 1-20 range.. I gave up on the idea, feels ugly for some reason.. Not a mathematical reason , just some sort of uncomfortable feeling...
  14. Hi all... I am thinking of a chase rule... I know, I know, there is something in the golden book.... however, hold on with me a moment, I might reuse some of it, but I am trying to come up with my own rule. Just bear with me a moment and tell me what you think. I think the purpose of the chase is to caught the guy running away, or run away from some pursuer. My initial approach is each party simply run at their nominal speed and I modify their distance accordingly. If enough space has been acquired, one can hide, cover their track ,etc.... Now my next problem is vehicle speed. I started with each vehicle simply move at its nominal speed, but might be limited by 2 factor, traffic/turn and obstacles. it's where both vehicle handling and driver skill can come in play to get the upper hand with some skill roll, and possibly close or increase the gap. I was thinking: traffic: each vehicle drive at traffic speed, roll modified skill roll to go a bit faster than traffic obstacle: reduce speed by any number between 10% to Handling% of speed. The roll driving skill with usual difficulty modifier to avoid the obstacle. Failure = crash, success = pass the obstacle. Example 1. case 1 traffic: Vehicle stat: SPEED/MOV 200, Handling (i.e. 50%) Traffic Stat: SPEED: 100, Clutter: 60% in traffic on run "Diving Skill + Handling - Clutter"%, i case of success they get 10% bonus, i.e. 200x10% = +20 MOV that round, i.e. 120 Example 2: Vehicle: SPEED/MOV 200, Handling 50% Difficult Obstacle, i.e. roll Driving Skill / 2. Reduce speed as desired between 10% to 50% i.e by 20 to 100. In case of skill failure => crash! for... 1D6 by 30 SPEED? (or maybe less..limited by the obstacle... have to think some more of it) What do ya think so far? Any counter suggestion?
  15. Alors la, permettez moi une critique facile et immediate, pourquoi ils mettent la version anglaise dans ce ce prix francais?! 😮 Sinon, allez Chaosium! Montre leur qui est le meilleur JdR! 😄 (Other than that, after 20 years oversea, I am losing my French 😢 )
  16. mmm... there was a recent post about it... I think it has been removed because, wait for it it, some image were copyrighted or something like that (IIRC)! 😮 Sound to me like those occasionally spurious Youtube copyright strike.. but, ha well, it happens! 😕
  17. I am working a Master of Orion ruleset. Nothing commercial, just being a word document that I will use to arbiter my own game.... However I would also like to share the resulting Word document publicly on this very website! _^ My question is about some rule from other game I am reusing. Obviously lot of rule are used everywhere and it is apparent (I Think...) that it is no biggie... However, looking for a vehicle rules... (car, motorbike, etc...) I only find some quick and convenient one in "Luther Arkwright", is that a problem if I put plagiarize custom version of it in my publicly available word document?
  18. I made some progress on that topic... 🙂 On one hand I create difficulty for myself 😅 I always imagine the Master of Orion universe being a "technotopia" (is that a word? it's one now! 😄 ) On the other hand I want to create adventures.. for people who are not part of any government agencies... (I like my player to be free agent and chose their own path...) Anyway good story with Vlad... 🙂 Other than that I came up with the following few fundamentals... - First I will start a civil war in the Empire.. that will obviously create some chaos and opportunities... - I am preparing multiple "circles" which are various "secret associations" of NPCs with means and agencies. And various plot points for each that have a chance to involve the players, for or against, in some ways... - I will start the campaign with a bang and a clue on one circle that, hopefully, the player will fill entitled to investigate on their own... - when players are involved with a circle, that increase the chance they could be involved with an enemy/ally circle! (i.e. they can be contacted, or attacked, or something...) - finally, if the player follow none of these clues.. I will have to slog them through some unrewarding space trading... and an occasional pirate attack (that can lead to more clues! 😮 🙂 )
  19. Yes, which is, for combat skills, the normal use. Who would have thought?! 😄 Beside that, I didn't read the whole 6 pages... But I am pretty sure there are no firearms in Stormbringer! 😛
  20. Hi! if I am not sure whether I checked it out (at work now).. but I think it's on the powerful side of magic style? I like BRP Magic for its more.. limited (yet good enough) power! I quite like the idea that they need burn coal continuously to power the city spell and that the protection can be disrupted if the coal supply is broken though! Or other kind of similar conditions that are not too hard to met, yet cannot be applied to all spells blindly... And, also, I deliberately didn't want to introduce in BRP the usual RuneQuest like "duration" spell shaping...
  21. I don't if it's relevant per se... But here we go with a personal observation / tweaks... While the BRP magic systems are my favorite (with the addition of a "creation" legend supplement from legend and sorcery from magic world), I am unhappy with all variation of elemental magic ... they are usually both too expensive and too powerful for my taste (which, I admit, might seem slightly contrary complaints). And also, and this is even more controversial here, I am unsatisfied with the feeling of progression between beginner and veteran magic user. Also I wanted to merge folk magic from Mythras in the Magic system I made a tweaked magic system which can be surmised, roughly, as the BRP Magic system with the following changes: - a spell caster spells are not limited by their levels but by their (modified) mana cost - The limit can be either minimimum (INT/2, spell/10%) or for ritual (slower casting) just ritual/10% - elemental bolt is 1MP +2MP/extra D6, a "shape" spell can be added for 4MP that turn it into a ball/cone/etc... - there is a new skill "arcane power" which adds 1MP to mana pool for every 10% - at 100% arcane power gain 1MP cost reduction for all spell, at 100% in a spell gain 1MP reduction for that spell + 1 additional 1MP cost reduction for every 10% above 100% (for that particular spell). other spell cost reduction (up to 4MP) are also spell specific and require an enchanted item (wand of fire, ring of change, etc..) - any spell can be with the ritual skill, at the rate of 1MP per round, ritual can also done with multiple caster for greater effect. this way simple 1MP spell do not need their own skill, ritual skill will do - one can totally avoid all damage from fireball (instead of the usual half damage from area attack) if using his move action (instead of simple defense reaction) to go away, still need evade roll and perception roll to see it coming + I added some spell, one of my favorite semi original spell is "elemental form", which is shapechange into an elemental, and Archon is a variation of that spell that cost 12mp (per 20siz) (prohibitively difficult) that turn self into "magic elemental" Also I am still wondering how to make spell last longer... I am unhappy the various duration skill, I like short duration, but I would like, at the same time, an easy way for some city defense to last (maybe requires coal burning and a special brazier) and spell like change or fly (current idea is magic crystal that has a number of charge, need to be prepared for a single specific spell, can provide up to a few days... )
  22. Thanks going to check them out! 🙂
  23. Hey, just curious, anyone know a good and easy Hex map drawing app? I bought Hexographer and I was not impressed.. 😕 Trying to create a galaxy map!
  24. I played a Cthulhu Dark one shot recently. It was quite fun. I was also the lone survivor! 😄
