  1. Thanks Chorpa, somehow I missed your episode 3. I will be keeping an eye on this thread. Rod
  2. Hi Miles and welcome to the forum. I quite D&D3 right around the same time you did D&D4. Our party was 13th level and when our ranger needed a calculator to figure out his "to hit" bonuses every round due to all the variables, I new it was time to close the door. Luckily for me, I was looking to get back into BRP gaming and was able to get into the playtest for Basic Roleplaying. Everything just fell into place from there. Rod
  3. I would say Legend. It, RQ6, and OpenQuest all share the same core mechanics. The BRP version adds tons of spells but they are designed for the BRP "Magic" system and isn't really compatible with OQ2's magic system without some modification. I haven't tried so couldn't say it would work. Tons. With the first book I was really limited by page count. Plus, the game has had 3+ extra years of playtesting, so I've discovered better ways to do things that I just never though of doing before. Rod
  4. That is one sweet looking Character Sheet. Thanks for the link.
  5. Off the top of my head, and keeping it simple, I would just do something like this… SIZ 01-05 Light SIZ 06-20 Medium SIZ 21-40 Heavy SIZ 41+ Huge Treat this as a base and make on the spot GM judgment calls where needed. Again, these numbers are pulled straight from the aether, you may want to look through the monster chapter and move the breakpoints around if they don't look right. Rod
  6. Hi keops, The only way you are going to be able to get a physical copy of BRP Classic Fantasy is directly from Chaosium or from e-bay/Amazon or something like that. The last I checked Chaosium only had the PDFs available. Keep bugging them and maybe they will reprint it. I am working on a much larger and more fleshed out second edition that will be out later this year hopefully. So keep your eyes open. Rod
  7. Welcome to the forum, and feel free to jump right in... no bother. Rod
  8. No, I can't say that I have. I kind of fell out of the current "non-BRP" loop when I started writing. I didn't really have the time anymore. Plus I used to be the manager of the gaming department of a hobby store. This gave me oodles of time to enjoy the new releases. Oh, well. Rod
  9. This really shouldn't be immersion breaking at all because its a monster's skill score. You as a player are never going to see the skill "in game". Instead, the GM is simply going to tell you as a player, that the monster climbs the cliff successfully, outruns you, falls on its face, etc. Immersion maintained. I know in your first post you mentioned that while you are reading several RPGs, you have not actually played one (other than the excellent Skyrim, which doesn't count cause its mechanics are hidden in computer code). You should really check out a local game store and find a group. Either ask if you can participate or even just watch. I think you'll find that a lot of these "silly" things you mention make sense "in game". If your ever in New Hampshire, I'll gladly let you sit in with my group. Rod
  10. Like button, like button? Trif where is the "like" button? Oh well. +1 Anyway Pete. You beat me to it. I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Every game designer has to make these decisions, and not everyone is going to agree with them. I will admit that to me, Athletics works better with skill improvement awards than with skill check boxes, but then again, you didn't implement the skill with skill "checks" in mind. I prefer a more condensed skill list then one taking up half the sheet, and I like hit locations as well. So I guess I must also prefer "silly" rules. Rod
  11. Ya, I sometimes feel like I have AD&D ADD my self. I love Hackmaster. I have quite a bit of 4th edition. I love the various monster books. To be honest, I never played them, pretty much bought them for the fun read. As for favorite settings, I would have to go with Greyhawk and Mystara. Rod
  12. The primary reason that I chose Legend over RQ6 is that Legend is OGL while RQ6 isn't. And even if it was, I didn't have access to RQ6 when I started my writing. To be honest, if things were different, I still would have chosen Legend. Not that I don't think RQ6 isn't a work of art. Its spectacular. But when your doing a conversion, the less you have to convert the better. BRP Classic Fantasy already had loads of things in it that I came up with on my own. Things that are not in Legend, but are in RQ6 to one extent or another, just using different rules. By using the streamlined Legend system, I find it much easier to fill in any "blanks" using my own stuff. Plus, just look at the SIZ/ENC of RQ6. The thing is enormous. Classic Fantasy looks to be enormous as well. I wouldn't want to combine them and be responsible for someone's back going out. Thanks for your interest, Rod
  13. Hello everyone, Many of you know me as the author of Chaosium's BRP Classic Fantasy Monograph. For the last year I have been converting and expanding Classic Fantasy to the Legend system. It's still maybe a year away from completion but enough has been finished that I figured I would post about it. What is Classic Fantasy? Classic Fantasy is a way of playing the Legend RPG that better mimics pre-third edition D&D, primarily 1st ed. AD&D to be precise. Included are all the classic player races and classes, spells, monsters, etc. It is a standalone product that is completely self contained. All of the rules to play will be found in the three core books, yet Classic Fantasy will remain 100% compatible with the rest of the Legend line, and maybe 80-90% compatible with other BRP products. How does Classic Fantasy differ from Legend? For the most part, Classic Fantasy uses the entirety of the Legend system without significant change. However some changes are made to better reflect the original source material. The most obvious is the use of classes. In Classic Fantasy, a "Class" is simply a Legend "Profession" with special abilities that reflect the class abilities found in AD&D; things like the fighter's weapon mastery, the clerics ability to "turn undead, demons, and devils", and the thieves backstab proficiency. However, after character generation, for the most part the player is able to develop his character in whatever direction he chooses. Classic Fantasy introduces an alignment system. However, unlike AD&D, these alignments do not dictate how you must play your character, instead, how you play your character dictates your alignment. One change from Legend is Skill Advancements. The BRP fan base seems equally split on whether they prefer Skill Advancement Awards, or Skill Check Boxes. I happen to prefer the latter and the book is being written to reflect this. Assuming that there is space to include it, I will include rules for Advancement Awards as an option. Finally, Classic Fantasy introduces a different magic system from those proposed in Legend. It uses familiar terms such as duration, magnitude, etc. and works very similar in many ways to the other systems, however increasing the spells magnitude will typically grant ALL the benefits of casting the spell at a higher level in AD&D. For example, increasing a spell by a single level of magnitude may increase its range, duration, and damage, dependent upon the spell in question. This allows the spell to better scale as its AD&D counterpart. The spell is NOT forgotten however. What is being included in the "conversion"? Unlike the original BRP version of Classic Fantasy where I faced significant space limitations, this version will be including every spell from the 1st ed. AD&D Players Handbook and every monster from the 1st. ed. Monster Manual (that I'm allowed to use according to the OGL), as well as a near-complete conversion of magic items. Because of this, Classic Fantasy will likely be several smaller books. More than likely a Player's Book, a Game Master's Book, and a Monster Book. One BIG book isn't out of the question however. How far along are you? Here is an overview of the progress to date. Player's Book Done with the exception of spells, of which I have only finished about 20-25% of them. There are literately hundreds of spells. Game Master's Book About 80% finished. Not counting magic items. Monster Book Only about 40% finished. Who is going to publish it? I'm not even thinking about this yet. I have had two different publishers contact me about the prospect, but I'm not yet ready to commit. I may even self-publish. This is something I work on in my spare time, a little every day, but publishers mean deadlines and I may not make them. So I figured when the books are written, but before layout has begun, at that point I'll get more serious about negotiating with interested parties. Like I said, self-publishing is a tempting option. Are you going to release the books as you finish them or when their are ALL done? When they are ALL done. That way as I work on the later books and realize I need to change something in the Players Book I can do it without having to release addenda. Is there anywhere else I can find out more about the new version of Classic Fantasy? Yes there is actually, I have just created a new Yahoo group just for the Legend version at... http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/LegendCF/ I usually post about the progress of Legend: Classic Fantasy there before posting anywhere else and your welcome to join. I already posted a copy of the Legend: Classic Fantasy Character Sheet, some example characters, and a write-up of the Fighter character class. Anyway, there it is. I can't give any idea as to when it will be ready. It will take time. I have a small cadre of outside playtesters going over it as well as my own group and things are looking well so far. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Rod
  14. This is why I ended up changing Appearance to Charisma in BRP: Classic Fantasy. And because it used to be Charisma in the earlier versions of RQ, I didn't feel overly bad about it. Rod
  15. I took a quick look around and found an interesting link over at RPG.Net that may have information that may help ya. http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?281348-Pitfalls-with-using-Coc-s-BRP-system-for-vanilla-mystery Within the thread are some links to other similar threads so they MAY lead to something. Rod
  16. Actually, the CF spells are additions the BRP Magic, not Sorcery which uses a different system. Rod
  17. With BRP and "BRP related" products, there is really no way to make a wrong choice. Welcome to the fold. Rod
  18. Note to self, don't spend all my Christmas money right away. Rod
  19. I wouldn't change the hit point formula from the established method. Instead change how the zombie reacts to the damage that has been inflicted. For example, this is a slight modification as to how I have zombies written up for Classic Fantasy. You may want to start with something like this as a base and modify from there. Zombies have no CON, and thus are immune to attacks and hazards that target that characteristic such as poisons. They are very hard to kill and they cannot be incapacitated. Zombies do not possess a total hit point score, only locational hit points, requiring them to be hacked to pieces. Their locational hit points are based on their SIZ as if it were a total hit point score. They are immune to bleeding Special Successes, and impaling weapons do only half damage, however arrows, bolts, and bullets do only 1 point of damage after armor reduction, unless the hit is a Special Success, in which case they do 2 points, or a hit to the head (brain) which does full damage (double damage with a special success). Destroying the abdomen renders both of the zombie’s legs useless and destroying the chest causes it to helplessly thrash around on the ground, unable to move. A limb reduced to 0 damage becomes useless, while being reduced to a negative score equal to the limbs total hit points causes it to become severed or maimed as normal. A zombie with a useless or severed/maimed limb suffers no negative effects other than the loss of said limb. Only by destroying the head (brain) is the zombie truly destroyed. Hope that gives you some ideas. Rod
  20. Make sure the CON roll to resist the virus is done by the Game Master and NOT the player to add suspense. The character should never know if their infected. Rod
  21. Wish I could be there, for the autograph, not the tomato throwing contest. Unfortunately, I live on the wrong side of the pond, in the New(er) England. Oh well, have a great time. Rod
