  1. For what wlewisiii wants to do, Biturian's story is probably the better example. Rurik's Saga is far more about teaching mechanics than providing background, and a game-experienced GM can handle that him-/herself. Given a RQ2 orientation (Prax or Sartar), the easiest and probably most common way to kick things off would be preparation of the PC's for and enactment of their tribal initiation ceremonies. I wouldn't suggest Lunar characters until the players are relatively conversant with the game and background, except perhaps as a local agent in their pay where the Lunars are generally remote and have little day-to-day impact.
  2. Outriggers are inherently more stable than what is effectively a single-hulled canoe. Even the Kon-Tiki, which was more of a raft but still sported a triple keel and is three times as wide as the Hjortspring boat, would be more survivable in violent sea conditions.
  3. GM worked fine for me. I never liked DM, because of the D&D association and because my games seldom took place in dungeons...
  4. Unless it's been Gregged, Zorak Zoran tore off Hippogriff's 'golden wings.' ("The Tale of the Horse", WF 11, p. 26, reprinted in Wyrms Footprints, p. 61). There doesn't seem to be much in the way of motivation, but then, why would the god of hate need a reason other than that she was on the opposing side? Just one of several humiliations visited on her by opponents, although her confrontation with ZZ isn't explicitly described as a battle, where those with Storm Bull (her fangs) and Maran Gor (her claws and broken legs) are. (Btw, Hippogriff was her original name, until Hyalor renamed her Hippoi, or horse, and 'broke' her.) There's a little bit more info in that piece (it's a single-column box in Wyrms Footprints), but there's not much about motivation or the rebirth, other than that (same reference)
  5. Had I any doubt that this is a fantasy game, it would have been utterly removed by this thread.
  6. Just think of it as official house rules.
  7. There's always the possibility of signing on to a vessel as crew or marines, especially in case of high-risk/value cargo runs. Many RP possibilities, including getting the captain to trust the PC's, interactions with the crew, etc.
  8. I did this as a matter of course. I had hp/location charts for all the PC's in a single page protector that I'd mark with a grease pencil, updating the sheet as the permanent stats changed. The players didn't have to track their damage, but I can't think of a single one who didn't. I'd still give them descriptive versions of cumulative damage regardless.
  9. Hmm...any idea what fire-based offensive spell that Lunar Priestess is using? Firefist? (Doesn't look much like Ironhand to me.)
  10. I'd personally be very interested in that boring spreadsheet.
  11. You can't tell it since the cover is monochrome, but the warrior is a Vingan (as demonstrated on the color 2nd edition cover, where she's clearly a redhead) and she's fighting a rock lizard. ETA: Duh...nm, I read RQ instead of HQ...
  12. Two problems with that: first, those stats are for D&D, and none of them approach what I would call Hero- or Superhero-level power, surprising since they were written by Dave Hargrave and would be beaten senseless in an Arduin Grimoire-power game. Jar-Eel at level 12? Really?
  13. Which I find silly, as ridiculous as the concept of a bunch of submicroscopic runes as elementary particles. There is, of course, RW precedent; many (if not all) cultures used myth to explain the unknown. Doesn't mean they were right.
  14. Odd, that. Personally I bristle at the idea that alll cause-and-effect processes must be magic-based, that there's no such thing as nature except as it's related to some god(dess).
  15. And then, of course, there's the Indiana Jones solution. Just make sure your holster is filled...
  16. Perhaps a Waertagi boarding action or Lunar vs. Sartarite or Pavic attack? It'd be a bit easier for the kids new to it to get into, although it'd probably involve a bit more preparation. (Cute kids, btw. I like your son trying to look hard. )
  17. Love it! I'm sure I recognize some of those from the AH Dragon Pass game...the Shadowland troll is the one that immediately jumps out at me.
  18. Tripolis should be singular, if it follows the Greek. (It's a single unit comprised of three cities/polities.)
  19. I meant absolutely new births, not rebirths. First-time, crested dragonewts. And who knows what goes on inside the protected environs of the Dragon's Eye?
  20. I don't buy a couple of things that that implies: first, that there aren't or have never been any new births in the Dragon's Eye, and second, that every Dragonewt who falls short of spiritual balance is a coward, cheat, or thief. Eh, the first is possible, I guess...it's been a while since there were any true dragons around (roughly 500 years), so far as outsiders know, aside from a couple of devourings.
  21. That doesn't really get at their motivation, though. Maybe the Giants stole some draconic magick? (Unlikely to apply to Gods Age myth, but vaguely possible.)
  22. Perhaps some form of magical 'tech' that the humans somehow don't know about and that the Dragonewts want to keep out of their hands, or simply to learn it themselves? Or even to protect the Giant baby? I can't think of any particular enmity between the Dragonewts and Giants, or friendship with the Lunars. That doesn't really address why they'd be involved in unconnected actions, either, unless one extrapolates that it was all eventually oriented toward assaulting the Cradle.
  23. I just had one of those slap-your-forehead realizations re: the failed attack vs. successful parry thing. So obvious once you think of it. It'd be a strong limiting factor against splitting attacks, especially when fighting more experienced opponents. (After some thought on the matter, usually in the shower when my mind wanders, I think I'd HR that particular rule to a max of 4 points damage to the weapon. One point really isn't enough; there'd end up being very little breakage at all. And possible full damage is excessive to my mind.)
