Gallowglass
Does anyone know what rune spells Shargash will have in the RQG cults book? Based on the Red Book of Magic I’m guessing Summon Demon is one of them. Anyone with an early copy know the others?
Richard S.
Over in the unofficial Chaosium discord David gave Berserker, Fear, Dismiss and Summon Fire Elemental (all sizes), Shield, and Summon Underworld Demon (all sizes) as his special spells. I seem to remember him having Humor as well, though I don't remember where I heard that. Edit: Just went and rechecked some things and can confirm that Shargash doesn't have Humor. My bad, I was conflating speculation with the facts. Humor is probably a special spell from Talor if I had to guess, maybe he'll get a writeup like Hrestol's with the Invisible God cult. Ceteris paribus, the RuneQuest: Gods of Glorantha advanced copy offers the following: Berserker, Dismiss Fire elemental (S & M), Summon Fire Elemental (S & M), Summon Demon (S, M, &L). Alkor gives Cremate Dead, Artmal gives True Sword, Anilla (Shargash's sister)gives Absorption, Hastatus gives True Spear, Lodril gives Fire Spear, Oslira gives Bless Crops (Rice), Yelm gives Sunspear.

Very interesting! I wonder if they’ll get into the regional variations like Tolat or Vorthan. Outside of Dara Happa, he probably wouldn’t have Alkor, Hastatus, or Oslira as associated cults. But I also wouldn’t think they acknowledge Artmal in Dara Happa, right?

I consider Shargash to be the regional variation, with Tolat being well known to the God Learners as a sort of ubiquitious opponent - through the Lopers, in Teshnos, in Pamaltela. Dara Happa appears to be ignorant of the Red Sword of Tolat. Somehow, Tolat is the twin of Annilla in the monomyth. Although, I guess I could understand how Shargash of Alkoth is not a martial cult specifically. More of a “Lord of Demons and the Underworld.” But Tolat and Vorthan from Fronela feel very warlike to me.

My mistake, no Rune Lords so not martial in that way, only initiates and priests. Shargash is the celestial god of war, funeral pyres, and human sacrifice. I realise he's shown with a mace and spear in Pavis GtA: and as Tolat in the Glorantha Sourcebook, he carries both. I had assumed it was a symbol of his rule of hell (mace as sceptre). and course: likely before he conquered Hell. So what's the source for the mace? Having worked on that with Pam and Martin and a few others, along with Greg, I think we largely worked off of GRoY (Shargash has his drums and drumsticks there) and Greg's Alkoth book. I don't remember if there was something specifically that referenced a mace, but it seemed to fit at the time.

The only mace there - the Mace of Authority - is wielded by Shargash or even from Alkoth. The nearest in the Thunderbolt.
