  1. Sorry but I have to disagree. BRP Classic Fantasy was the best selling non-Cthulhu Monograph published by Chaosium for the last five years of the Monograph run. It included Classes featuring all of the archtypes made famous by AD&D. Obviously, someone liked and used them. I would rather have a BRP/RuneQuest/D100 game that says, "hey, come check this out, it has all the archtypes your already familiar with, but uses a much better system", then say, "sorry, we cant help you, but enjoy your D&D, Vampire, and Savage Worlds". Obviously, Classic Fantasy and its Classes cater to a certain type of gamer and isn't necessarily for everyone, but that type of gamer happens to be the largest demographic in this industry, and we could use a few more of them. Rod
  2. It really all depends on "how" classes are handled in a particular game. As mentioned, both BRP Classic Fantasy and the upcoming RQ Classic Fantasy utilize classes. But there are no built in limits to the skills a class can or cannot use. Yes, one class may be the better at climbing walls and picking locks, and have some "special abilities" that support that, but there is no reason that the parties cleric or fighter can't have the same skills in excess of 90% or even higher. So as you mentioned; "One guy might be the "best" demolitions guy on a SpecialOps team, but few of them will be less than competent at it." This can easily be handled with classes if their not done in a restrictive manner. Rod
  3. I played my fair share of RoleMaster and MERP back in the day. I did enjoy the level of lethality it offered, something not common to other level based systems. I still remember a poster for RoleMaster in the local hobby shop, it read: RoleMaster; Because Fighters Don't Kill Dragons... Criticals Kill Dragons. Rod
  4. The professions in Traveller were just templates to begin your game. Actually, the original Traveller "little black books" didn't even have a character advancement system after the game began if I recall. All character advancement took place during character creation and there was no actual change once play began. It's been a while however, so I could be wrong. Rod
  5. While I wouldn't want to diminish the part that RQ played on the history of role playing games and agree that it did play a huge part. I would like to point out that Steve Jackson's GURPS followed a different design path, one that predates RQ by as much as one year. GURPS was an evolution of Steve Jackson's earlier The Fantasy Trip from 1980, which was an expansion of both Wizard (1978) and Melee (1977). As Melee predated RQ by a year, and included things that were later incorporated by RQ, I would question who got the idea from whom, as Melee had such innovations as non-level based advancement, non-escalating hit points, armor that reduces damage, skill rolls, and a tactical combat system. Again, I love RuneQuest and all things BRP, but like many of the users on this forum, I was there and remember all to well the early days of the hobby, and just wanted to point out this piece of history. Rod
  6. I can't take this pressure right now. Rod
  7. Thanks Fingolfin80, and everyone else. Editing is done. Its currently in layout. Art for it is coming in at a rate of about 2 or 3 AWESOME pieces a day. I "think" Loz posted on another forum that it is looking like a Q1 2016 release. But if I'm mistaken, I'm sure he'll chime in. Thanks for your interest, Rod
  8. This looks very interesting. I'll be ordering a hardcover after the holidays. Rod
  9. You might want to check out either BRP Classic Fantasy or the upcoming RQ Classic Fantasy, the latter a publication coming soon from The Design Mechanism. Classic Fantasy takes the versatility of the various D100 systems, and adds classes such as the fighter, ranger, cleric, etc. These are not the restrictive classes common to level based game systems, but they do each have their own unique special abilities so that each player can have their own "thing". You can find more information about each version in their corresponding threads. BRP version: http://basicroleplaying.org/topic/1328-classic-fantasy-a-return-to-the-dawn-of-roleplaying/ RQ version: http://basicroleplaying.org/topic/3342-runequest-classic-fantasy/ Plus you can join either of my Yahoo groups for "inside" info. Links in my sig. Rod
  10. I agree, as it was to be a product compatible with RQ6 anyway, it would have had nothing to do with Chaosium. I know Sarah and she is a VERY busy woman. I think it just comes down to time. Rod
  11. I was just on TDM's website and found out that their last copy of Adventures in Glorantha was put up on e-bay. While its already gone past what I can afford, I thought I would bring it to everyone's attention. Call your gaming group, pool your money, get it while you can. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/-/252210510161?ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:CA:1123 Rod
  12. Also don't forget that not all of the dinosaurs need to be full grown if you want to challenge your players and not kill them. After all, a young allosaur can be as deadly as you want it to be, just vary the age. Plus, actual velociraptors were much smaller then those depicted in JP. I would create "realistic" raptors for a nice challenge, and make up the stats for the deinonychus if you want something closer to the velociraptor as depicted on screen. Rod
  13. Looks good, but average DEX is wrong. Rod
  14. I'm in!!! And now the waiting begins.
  15. Oops, sorry. I just noticed this. There are no magic items in BRP Classic Fantasy. They were to be included in later supplements that did not come to fruition. RQ Classic Fantasy however has hundreds of classics, plus systems of creating some cool random ones. Again, I don't want anyone to buy the BRP version looking for magic items, and then going after Chris for a refund. The guys too busy with conversions to have to fight a lengthy court battle. ;-) Rod
  16. Thanks for the praise Chris. I would like to further elaborate however for those that may get the wrong impression on Classic Fantasy's "classes". CF's classes are simply BRP professions with special abilities added. They are not anymore restrictive then normal professions are. They just give a starting point based on the original classes presented in AD&D. Once the game has begun, if you want your thief to learn how to use a great axe, pick one up and start swinging it. And if you want your magic-user to be able to climb walls... go climb some walls. I used the term "class" solely for nostalgic reasons. Just want to make sure we're all on the same page. Rod
  17. Actually I disagree. Being a generic write-up of fantasy critters, I would have it be the one most people are familiar with. The "real" version would be best reserved for an appropriate setting like "Merrie England". Rod
  18. I would like to suggest that maybe in the creature section, as you have several barsoomian creatures, you include a sidebar or text box with information on "Playing Humans on Mars". This is where you could note that red martians, yellow martians, black martians, etc. are simply created using the normal rules for character creation. However you could also include a few brief notes for playing humans transported from Earth to Mars, and how it effects things such as strength, jumping, etc. Obviously the "pulp" version, nothing based in reality. Rod
  19. Mostly calculations. Each game calculates skills a little differently, and/or has different skills entirely. Some subsume one or more skills; Sneak and Hide become Stealth. Those that use Hit Locations usually calculate the hit points in each location differently. Damage bonus is usually calculated using the same characteristics, but the table will produce different results. None of these obstacles are insurmountable, you just have to be aware of them and adjust them to whatever system you choose. On a side note, I created a BRP Fallout sheet for the BGB during the playtest that may be of use to you. It can be found at... Happy Gaming, Rod
  20. Hey Choat, great sheet. I just found it. Rod
  21. My prayers are with all those in Paris currently undergoing these horrible attacks. I hope if any of our members on this very forum live there or have family in the area, that they are safe and out of harms way. Rod
  22. Here's one a lot of our writers will appreciate...
  23. That's right. Tomorrow I will have all but disappeared. My friends and family may still see me off and on, but for the most part I will be unresponsive. I may not shower for several weeks and hopefully my wife will feed me once and a while so I can keep my strength up. For tomorrow I play Fallout 4. I will miss you all. Rod
  24. First "published" RPG with rules for chainmail bikinis. ;-) Classic Fantasy started life as a spoof of D&D and I have rules written up for chainmail bikinis complete with wardrobe malfunction table. It still leaves my friends in stitches every time we use it. Rod
  25. I just assumed it was a use of the Enhance [Characteristic] Power. ;-) To be honest, I'm a HUGE fan of all things Edgar Rice Burroughs, and have have so many books with covers featuring scantily clad females that I never even noticed anything out of the ordinary. I most definitely don't see anything wrong with the picture and would say she is of medium size in my opinion and completely covered. I see nothing objectionable, nor does my wife. I wanted to get her permission before posting about breasts. ;-) Rod
