Do you want a new general d100 subforum?

General d100 forum or not?

39 members have voted

  1. 1. Some members have asked for a general d100 board. Do YOU feel the board needs a general d100 forum?

    • Nope. The Basic Roleplaying forum is allready full of general d100 threads and works fine for that.
    • Yes, I'd like a top new general d100 forum (even if general d100 threads from the BRP forum won't be moved to the new forum...)

As the title and poll question says, do you feel the need for a general d100 forum? Most of the threads in the BRP forum concerns general d100 threads, but these would moved to a new forum due to the amount of work that would be. Knowing that, would you still like a new general forum? If so, it will be put on top, with the BRP forum down with the other specific game system threads.

The current setup (since I started using the BRP board for general d100 discussion recently) has already occasionally resulted in the confusion of thinking I was mostly referring to BGB stuff, when I was mostly referring to MW/RQ6/Legend, but in a way that was general enough that someone using the BGB might be able to get something out of it.

A separate board  for general, non-BGB d100 talk would be helpful, if for no reasons other than clarity.

Since BRP is the mother D100 system, regardless of game or publisher, I don't see a need for a separate forum.

I don't think that's entirely accurate. The first edition of RuneQuest is dated 1978, whereas the first edition of Basic Roleplaying is dated 1980, so RuneQuest would be the mother d100 system regardless of game or publisher, not BRP.

A lot of ideas get floated in the BRP forum which aren't necessarily targeted at BRP. For example I play Elric! mostly and I mostly think along those lines, but also various incarnations BRP. Whenever I've posted something generally applicable I've put it in the BRP thread. Since the Big Gold Book is a book of game options and not exactly a game you would play 'out of the box (book?)' I'm happy to leave the BRP forum as the main 'd100' thread.

Looking at it from that approach, maybe just renaming the forum to d100 General and not having a BRP board would be the best approach. But it can be a little frustrating if everyone assumes the BGB is what is being discussed in a general d100 thread, because for some of us, it isn't. I don't own the BGB and from what I've heard about it I'm unlikely to/don't see a reason to pick it up - I may pick up a couple of other Chaosium BRP supplements, like Blood Tide, or some of the Monographs. When I make a general d100 thread, I'm typically talking about MW+Legend+RQ6, but I have been considering getting one of the other d100 core systems, namely OpenQuest2 and Renaissance Deluxe.

I guess my point is, while I may be discussing several d100 systems, if someone assumes I am specifically discussing the BGB instead of any of several different d100 systems (with none of the ones I am personally using being the specific one they think I am using), then part of the thread gets rather fuzzy/unclear, and that can be rather annoying.

Actually, RuneQuest is technically the mother of BRP…….

Personally, I think they should merge the different sub forums - to consolidate the subject discussion a little bit. There isn’t enough traffic currently for a number of sub-forums and to be frank, much of the differences between game lines is more to do with branding rather than non-compatability.

Ya right about RQ, but I don';t think consolidtion is necessarily a good idea. RQ3 and RQ6 are quite different, as are BRP and Legend. I could see consolidating those systems that are very similar (MRQ2/Lenged) but I think some things should be kept separate just so the right people have athority over them. What I mean by that is so Pete & Loz get to control RQ6 and keep is apart from Legend, Open Quest

I suppose we could consolidate some of the minor variants (i.e. Strombirnger) in with thier parent system (i.e RQ2/3 or BRP).

Personally I'd suggest consolidating Stormbringer with Magic World, if anything. It would make more sense than consolidating it with any of the other boards. The way I see it Magic World is Stormbringer 6e, the same way MRQII/Legend are RQ5e

What about renaming the current BRP forum "d100 - Forum for general d100 discussions" and lumping BRP and all Chaosium games (MW, Stormbringer, CoC) together in a single forum with subfora (like the "More Games" forum) dedicated to the single games?

Of the suggestions voiced in this thread, this one has the most merit, I think.

But I am perfectly fine with the forums as they are, and don't want the board to be splintered more than necessary.

I'm a fan of the D100 motherboard, and every other system that has enough traffic getting it's own thread. But part of that would be poster clarity, too, so that everyone posting a non-general thread in the D100 board, say about Future*World, would tag their subject line accordingly - in the latter case, by putting [Future*World] or [FW] or [WoW] in front of the subject header.

To some extent you are correct but Stormbringer is different in some minor rules and in a major way with the background setting. Plus Stormbringer is defunct, while Magic World is still being  published. So consolidating the two doesn't seem very practical to me.

We're talking about different editions of Stormbringer! :D

I was thinking of the original one by Chaosium, which has more in common with RQ2/3 than Magic World.

Come to think of it, this does raise another problem. Often when referring to things like Stormbringer, RQ2,  Magic World or even BRP, people can be talking about different RPGs with the same name.

IMHO...leave it alone. As mentioned above the BRP forum is subtitled "...and general d100 discussions". That should cover concerns. There are six subforum for presently active BRP/d100 related RPGs on the market. Questions about those specific games make sense posted there. All else goes to the BRP. Regardless of origin, it is the presently the defacto treasure trove from which to glean mechanics material and the base line most of the above refer or nod to.

In addition, splitting it up might set a precedent with unintended consequences: What about a Corum forum? a Stormbringer! forum, an Elric forum, a Dragon Lords of Melnibone (LOL!) forum, an Elf-quest forum, a Ringworld forum, a Hawkmoon forum, a Runequest 2, a Runquest 3, a BRP Glorantha...etc., etc.

Just my two cents.

Like, Stormbringer 1? lol. Yeah, when I say Stormbringer, if I'm talking about specifics, I'm probably referring to Chaosium Stormbringer 5. Though I do own 4, and Elric!

Hmm. I don't think that presents a ton of problems here, since the d100 titles change much less between editions than say: D&D does. But yeah, if to me, "Stormbringer" is going to mean Stormbringer 5e (and I tend to assume you'e talking about the most recent edition unless otherwise stated) and to you it means "Stormbringer 1e", there could be a bit of confusion once we start talking about specific details - just like if you say RuneQuest I'm going to assume you mean the most recent RQ6 by Loz, not RQ1 by Steve Perrin.

And that is the problem with separating the forums.

When I say Stormbringer, I am talking about the one that I know and started with, Stormbringer 1. When I say RuneQuest, I am talking about all the versions of RQ that I have played/used (RQ2 onwards), but when I say RQ2, RQ3, RQM/MRQ, RQM2/MRQ2, RQ6 or Legend then I am talking about specific editions with specific rules. If we have a RuneQuest forum then that is managed by the current guardians of RQ and they generally talk about RQ6, which is fair enough.

But there are times when rules/spells/skills/techniques from earlier versions are worth discussing as alternatives. There are also a lot of people who still only play RQ2, RQ3, RQM* or currently play Legend, they could raise topics in the RuneQuest forum, but would specific version forums be better for them?

If I see a discussion in the BRP forum about a topic that was covered in RQ2, then I am quite happy to remind people of how RQ2 did that. Other people often do this with Stormbringer, Elric, Hawkmoon, Ringworld and all the other BRP-based games out there.

So, we either fragment into different versions of different systems, each with a separate forum, or we have a general forum for any discussion about any D100 game. Or we have both, or some, or none.

Absolutely.

But the way I see it, we should either have a General d100 board, or two separate boards for d100 and BRP – but having a BRP board that serves the secondary purpose of being the general d100 board seems less than ideal to me.

Just what is a "General d100" topic?

BRP is (the current) BRP

RQ is RQ6

Most other versions of the d100 system have their own forum here. Just what do we need a general forum for? I'm not arguing against it, I just would like to see some topics that would fall into the "General d100" category.
